Grand Central Market Game Nights -- Take two!

Thu December 18 at 6:00 PM, Grand Central Market
Grand Central Market, 317 South Broadway, Los Angeles, CA, USA (Map & Directions)
After checking in with Celsius1414 I'm re-posting this since it didn't get off the ground last time.

Food! Drink! Games! Friends! Food and drink and games and friends at the same time!

----

I stumbled across a mention of gaming nights at Grand Central Market in DTLA and tracked down this press release and then this page.

Game Night at Grand Central Market

Looking to unwind after a tough day at work? Searching for fast, amazing fare to satisfy your foodie cravings? Planning a non-cliche date night? Whatever your Downtown LA dilemma, the city's oldest food hub has your back.

Enter Game Night -- eat, drink and play every Thursday until 9 pm. Grab dinner and drinks from our late hours vendors over an assortment of classic and new games: ping-pong, cornhole toss, Jenga, Uno, Cards Against Humanity, Scrabble, and many more. Just head over to the Hill St. Platform to get started.

We broached the subject of a gaming night at our last meetup (mmmm ramen), so this "proposed" post is more of a means to continue that conversation than saying it should be here at GCM necessarily.

Update 9/5: The consensus during our Ethiopian food meetup conversation seemed to be that with everybody being spread out, it's difficult to make a game night plan on work nights. If someone else wants to propose game/trivia/movie meetups for their individual environs, that might be the better way to go.
UPDATE 11/15: I picked 6:00pm as a start time, but we should hash that out here, even though people will probably show up at slightly staggered times. As far as I can tell there is no official start time, just an end time of 9:00pm.

We can also hash out preferred games here if everyone wants, or we can play it by ear once we get there. I have a Simpsons version of UNO I can bring, as well as two full decks of cards if everyone suddenly wanted to play Canasta :D

But what activity/location/date are you proposing, exactly?

I'm proposing a meet-up at Grand Central Market's game night on a Thursday TBD.

(I thought I already deleted the date of the press release but I just took care of that.)

Here are the upcoming Thursdays until 2015(!)

Nov. 20
Nov. 27 (Thanksgiving)
Dec. 4
Dec. 11
Dec. 18
Dec. 25 (Christmas)

Any of these work for me.

I have class on Thursday nights, with finals being the week of the 11th. So I could only come after that. WHICH I TOTALLY WOULD.

This sounds really fun, and since I work in Ktown it's very easy for me to take the red line downtown after work. I am busy on the 11th but will try to make it if it's any other Thursday.

Definitely interested, but probably couldn't make it until at least December 11 due to end-of-term madness.

It sounds like the 18th will work for most people so far. I'll wait a day or two and if there are no objections I'll confirm for the 18th.

Nthing the 18th working for me, and I'm stoked the idea might come together at last. Thanks Room! :D

This sounds awesome!

I am in fact going to be in San Diego. Hope you all have an awesome time though and I hope there's a next game night for me to get to in the new year!

Aww, I hope you have fun.

Seconding the missing you, Alterscape!

So what time works for people? I'm good with anything.

I'm definitely planning on eating there (is everyone?) but I have no idea if that means getting there early or if we can grab something to bring back to where ever we are playing.

I have 6 pm down on my calendar, which works for me as a target time.

And food will be consumed. Oh yes. Food will be consumed.

Hey LA MeFites, I'm visiting family in the OC and might try to make it in. But I got questions.

- Google maps says approach from the 101, and take 4th St/3rd St in. Does that sound fine? (Not optimal, I'll settle for fine.)

- Is parking a problem?

- If GCM is big, is there a place y'all congregate?

I hope to be able to make it.

Entrance to the GCM parking structure is on Hill Street by the way, so it can be easier to enter by circling around the block (depending as always on traffic, and this is right about rush hour).

The World Famous is on target with the Hill Street end of the Market. There's also an info booth right there where you can get your parking ticket validated.

When leaving, keep an eye out for the ticket payment machines, as it's way less stress to pay there than while sitting in your car at the exit gate with a line of impatient drivers glaring at the back of your head.

Oh and when it comes to traffic (especially that time of day in DTLA), I can heartily recommend the Waze app (on iOS and Android), as it can find the best route for you when you're actually on your way and adjust it as conditions warrant.

Cool, hope you make it, benito.strauss! I'll wear my MeFi shirt!

I haven't been there since all the changes, but if someone knows a good place to meet that might a good thing to figure out.

If you check out this page and click on "View Map" (top left), we would be meeting in the large area on the Hill St. (aka left) side.

The parking garage is represented by the car icon at the top leftish.

I'll be taking the train down, unless it's raining in which case I might flake. =/
Hill looks pretty level between Pershing Square and GCM, right?
posted by ApathyGirl at 8:56 PM on December 17, 2014

I believe so, yep.
posted by Celsius1414 at 9:02 AM on December 18, 2014

I probably won't wear my MeFi shirt.
posted by Room 641-A at 10:56 AM on December 18, 2014

I'll probably be wearing my Red Sox hat, and look pretty much like my profile picture, only more confused.

Blah, I'm entertaining my visiting family tonight after all, and don't think I'll be able to make it. Next time, though!

On the train, no flaking for me this time!
posted by ApathyGirl at 5:03 PM on December 18, 2014

I'll probably be 30-45min late. Bringing Rummy Tile.

I'm at staples center and should get to hope & 4th soon. Hopefully I can walk the last 3 or 4 blocks without getting lost.

I'm here, hopefully getting some pupusas before they close. I have boy cut pink and brown hair, and a Gozërhead shirt on.

Ha! I'm here, getting won ton soup before the close! I am wearing grey. IOW I am dressed like a concrete pylon. You can't miss me!

You guys that was so much fun! It was great meeting The World Famous and benito.strauss for the first time and Apathy Girl for probably the second. And it's always a pleasure seeing Chica and Celsius :)

Great food, too! Maybe next month we can go back and even play a game!

I had a great time folks. A pleasure putting faces to known names, and meeting some brand new people too. (And finding out what Celsius1414 refers to. The more I thought about it driving home, the cleverer I realized it was.)

TWF, is this the opera movie you recommended? I'll give it a shot, and you can tell your Mother what a good ambassador for opera you're being!

I probably won't be around long enough for another meet-up this trip, but I'll plan ahead the next time I'm visiting SoCal. I might try to time it for the 2015 Printer's Fair.

P.S. Excellent food, the kind of variety I miss not being here.

Games? We don't need no stinkin' games! ;)

So much fun, y'all! Thanks to Room 641-A for organizing it!

And it was a pleasure to meet you, The World Famous and benito.strauss!

Happy to see all of you on our inaugural (and, in retrospect, ironically named) Gaming Night! And a Happy Holidays as well.

Let's for sure figure something out for next month.

Whaaaat?? I'm definitely not back here, getting won ton soup and rib tips for lunch. Nope. I can stop any time I want.
