Field trip: the Museum of Jurassic Technology
posted September 1, 2014 8:36 PM   RSS | iCal | +googleCal

Sat September 20 at 3:30 PM, Museum of Jurassic Technology
9341 Venice Boulevard, Culver City, CA, USA (Map & Directions)
The Museum of Jurassic Technology in Culver City is a place that engenders love and and serious confusion, perhaps in equal measures. It is a palace of many mythical wonders and it was proposed as one of the next meetup locations. It's open until 6:00 PM on Saturdays; the cafe offers complimentary tea and cookies until 5:00. (It is also close to the Center for Land Use Interpretation, which is equally a palace of wonders if you like scholastic text and resource allocation. They also have quite a cool map of points of interest in the area around their Culver City branch.)
Update: Given that no one seems to have a conflict, I'm going to go ahead and confirm this for the 20th at 3:30 PM (though if anyone is there earlier or later, just post in the thread.) Dinner at Hu's afterwards, probably around 6, 6:30.

Cost: I'm just going to copy their admissions list directly
Adults, $ 8.00
Children aged 13 to 21, $ 5.00
Students in full time education, $ 5.00
Persons 60 years or older, $ 5.00
Unemployed persons, $ 5.00
Disabled Persons, $1.50
Active service personnel in uniform, $ 1.50
Children 12 and under, Free
Time: early afternoon onwards

Followed by: (reasonably priced) drinks, food. I had suggested Cafe Ugo, which has a happy hour with many inexpensive options, but Yelp suggests it's much busier during the weekend. Yelp also suggests many local Indian places, though I am hoping someone with more Palms/Culver City experience will suggest their favorite places.

Getting there: general Culver City info here. There are also convenient buses, with a bus stop right outside and it's a mere three blocks from a stop on the Metro Expo line.

I'd like to suggest Hu's Szechuan, on Rose in Cheviot Hills.

There are indeed some good Indian places one block down from the museum, as well as a tea room on site upstairs. Their gift shop, though small, is mighty, so allocate funds for that as well. ;)

Does anyone have a date preference between the 20th, the 27th, or October 4th? I am open to Sundays as well, but I know we've had some conflicts with that in the past.

I can't make it but I just came in here to say Tito's Tacos.

I can't make the 27th on account of another shindig, but the other days sound good to me.

I'm free all of those Saturdays.

I would prefer the 20th or the 27th. I have another thing on the 4th but I'm not committed.

I'm also a strong Yes for Hu's but want to say on the record that Tito's is awesome. I'm not clicking that link, though, because the song is already worming its way into my head.

(For timing purposes, Hu's is closed between 2:30-5:00.)

Considering the Museum of Jurassic Technology is open from noon-6pm, it seems like it should be possible to make this work with either Hu's Lunch or Hu's Dinner, depending what's on first (No he isn't, he's on.. third?).

For purely selfish reasons I guess I'd advocate for the 20th or 4th, but hey!

It seems like no one has an issue with the 20th-- maybe 3:00, 3:30? I'm also totally down with Hu's; is there easy parking?
posted by jetlagaddict at 9:35 PM on September 7, 2014

Hu's does have a couple of parking spots but unless something has changed I remember the parking was pretty bad otherwise, to be honest.

The parking at Hu's is competitive and street. It's annoying, unfortunately. It's nestled in a largely residential area.

For folks that take the Metro to the museum, I have room for 3-4 in my car to go to Hu's and back to a Metro stop.

Thank you ApathyGirl!

to Hu's and back

At the last meet-up we talked about how Culver City is the Bermuda Triangle. Hu's is practically the epicenter so I wouldn't get my hopes up about the "and back" part.

In minor good heat wave news, it should be under 80 on the west side on Saturday.

Ok, my schedule has become sufficiently clear that I am now firmly in the Yes camp. I'll probably show up an hour early and camp out at The Culver Hotel for a cocktail if anyone wants to join me.

After all this, my schedule's shifted a bit tomorrow and I have to drop back to 'maybe'. =(

I'm not going to be able to attend either, unfortunately. Have fun everyone!

The parking at Hu's is competitive and street.

I keep reading the word "street" as an adjective.

I'm going to have to pull out due to illness. I'm super bummed out because I've been looking forward to going for ages. Hope you guys have some extra fun for me.
posted by bswinburn at 12:42 PM on September 20, 2014

Aww, I was going to meet you for a rare drink because I've never been to The Culver Hotel. Feel better!
posted by Room 641-A at 12:54 PM on September 20, 2014

Hmm-- does it make any sense to try to reschedule, given our dwindling numbers? (Unless everyone's en route, in which case we'll be there at 3:30!)
posted by jetlagaddict at 12:55 PM on September 20, 2014

I'd be willing to reschedule because I know this is a place a lot of people want to visit. I'm also prepared to carry on, so I'll leave it up to the others.
posted by Room 641-A at 1:04 PM on September 20, 2014

I'm on my way, but that can be reversed without hassle.
posted by Room 641-A at 2:01 PM on September 20, 2014

Been a crazy day so far, so rescheduling would suit me -- as it is, I'd likely be late getting there.

Can we try to do later in October then, or early November? I admit I'm battling a cold but I do want to do this soon!
posted by jetlagaddict at 2:05 PM on September 20, 2014

I'm pretty open on October weekends at this point.

Perfect timing, Im just a few blocks from a friends house now.

I am up for october.

Late October is great for me!

Well, if you're looking for something to do in early october I recommend you check out this meetup.
posted by bswinburn at 4:51 PM on September 20, 2014

Get well soon, bswinburn! I wouldn't have been able to make it yesterday so I'm sort of glad it's working out for everyone to reschedule for late October.
posted by estherbester at 9:46 PM on September 21, 2014

Okay! So, I can't do any other weekends in October. Does anyone have opinions on November dates? Is Saturday or Sunday better?
posted by jetlagaddict at 3:17 PM on October 7, 2014

Regardless of which day we choose, we may want to shoot for one of the first two weekends, as Thanksmas madness will probably mess with peoples' schedules thereafter. Though, come to think of it, a visit to the MJT could be a great escape from said madness!
