Mostly beans have returned from their honeymoon and today is gingerbeer's birthday. It's been so long since we met up. Let's get together soon?!

Appropriate date to post a Bay Area meetup, too.

Yes yes! I've recently moved here (again) and would be excited to meet some of you guys.

And special-k is back! We must meet!

I note that The Whelk is headed here soon. We have to take him somewhere gay and quiet.

I like this idea. I am swamped like woah, but will try.

I'm moving to the area (Mountain View) on 11/10; would love to meet some new friends if it happens after that.

Have no fear, once we get going we have strings of meet-ups.

This sounds good. I am always in favor of quiet, a fan of The Whelk, and fine with Teh Gay. I'm concerned, though, that one meetup might not be able to encompass all of this. Plus there's gingerbeer's birthday, Les Haricots are back, new people are coming in - we definitely need to pace ourselves here. Solution: multiple meetups.

Hey, I've started going to the new Rosemunde, which is around 24th & Mission. They have a zillion excellent beers plus great sausages and terrific fries. Much roomier than the old place on Haight.
posted by jasper411 at 9:37 AM on October 18, 2010

heh japer411. We had the last (failed) The Whelk meetup at the mission Rosemunde. Consensus was that it was too loud.

The Grove strikes me as a place that would be good for a meetup. Bart-friendly, food and non-acoholic options, not too pricey, and counter service to avoid the large bill clusterfucks. I've never been there at night so the noise level is something I don't know about. It's fine in the afternoon though.
posted by Doublewhiskeycokenoice at 11:19 AM on October 18, 2010

Wait, you want to have a meetup where people can *talk* to each other? Think about the introverts, won't you?
posted by jasper411 at 11:33 AM on October 18, 2010

yes! if we're going to do this soon it's probably worth keeping in mind the Giants' schedule. if a meetup and game coincide we should go somewhere without TV, because people randomly screaming is kind of annoying.

(go Phillies!)
posted by madcaptenor at 11:59 AM on October 18, 2010

Doublewhiskeycokenoice: But they do have beer right? right? If so let's do it. Maybe a late Sat afternoon meetup? This weekend (23rd) or next? Preferences?
posted by special-k at 12:13 PM on October 18, 2010

ROSAMUNDE WAS SO FRICKIN LOUD THE LAST TIME WE WERE THERE. INSANELY LOUD!

Probably the least-loud meetup we've had recently was the Dolores Park one, but I don't know that we can count on the weather.

Also, if we go somewhere without a TV and the Giants are still in it, some of us may be randomly screaming anyway, as we check the scores on mobile devices. Or run to a bar nearby to check scores.

I have never been to the Grove, but it sounds good, especially if we start in the afternoon (when it will presumably be quieter).

GO GIANTS!

But they do have beer right?

Oh, but of course. And wine.

I can back the 23rd. You have my sword.

I've walked past the Grove on my way to other work-lunch places, but haven't been there. That + the 23rd sounds good to me.

Gay not a sticking point, but quiet is preferred. I'm working this trip ( theatre stuuuf ) but I might be able to get away for an evening.

I'm on the plane to SF RighT Now actually...

Total Mefi meetup noob: I just moved to the Bay Area (Walnut Creek, yay!) for my job and am interested in attending one of these meetups. What's the dynamic? Is this a tight-knit group or 'the-more-the-merrier' type event?

thanks! -john

ps: enjoy beer, meeting people, sausage (not that kind...wait, maybe that kind...) and lurking on ask metafilter

Relative noob to MeFi, total noob to meetups.

Like jdlugo, I'm also down if welcome. The Grove is great and this sounds like fun. Go Phillies.

Lo these three years ago, I was a noob to Mefi, and I went to my very first meetup — in this city! — and it was great. You guys should definitely come. Since that first one I've been to a few more in other places, and it's always a good time: talking about Metafilter, making silly internet jokes, trading outrageous stories, etc. New people are welcome, and shy people, and people of all kinds. Sometimes they're a couple hours of friendly chatting, sometimes they turn into epic nine-hour caravans from cafe to restaurant to bar.

It's the more the merrier, for sure. Unless you're a Phillies fan. Just kidding! not really

Stupid suburban-ite question: is there a Giants' game that day?

There is a game, in Philly, starts at 1pm (well, 12:57 for the purists) so should be finished by meetup time.

I think I should just announc what bar I'll be hanging out in on the 22nd. My schedule has been changed so much it's not even a little funny.
posted by The Whelk at 8:33 AM on October 21, 2010

Whelk, please do! I think we're doing figaro that night, so I won't be free until LATE, but I'd love to come nerd about theater for a bit.
posted by mollymayhem at 9:26 AM on October 21, 2010

mollymayhem: I didn't realize "nerd" was a verb? (although "geek" is, so I guess it makes sense.)
posted by madcaptenor at 2:09 PM on October 21, 2010

I hope you were serious about announcing your whereabouts on the 22nd, Whelk. I would really like to meet MetaFilter's most celebrated mollusc!
posted by Quietgal at 5:11 PM on October 21, 2010

Okay, looks like I can call it. I will be at Li Po in Chinatown, because it is my favorite bar interior and the jukebox is fun, at around 6:30. I'll be hanging out there till about 8 30 or a bouts. I've got fake blond hair and will be probably be dressed way too nicely for the bar.

Info!

916 grant

Note, I will not be in the windowless basement space. I'll be in the quiet main bar. If you're in the area, come drop in.

As a suggestion, the back of The Sycamore was relatively quiet, though potentially cold.

I doubt I can make it Friday (due to previous plans) or Saturday (due to robot combat), though.

Okay, Pronoiac, now I want to get me some robot combat too!
posted by hapax_legomenon at 9:41 PM on October 21, 2010

The back of the Sycamore would also be less than ideal if it rains.
posted by madcaptenor at 10:02 PM on October 21, 2010

I will be forced cooing over tiny things at a baby shower. After the third consecutive onesie, I shall look to the heavens and sigh for the beers I could be drinking with all of you.
posted by chatongriffes at 10:40 AM on October 22, 2010

That's the one, hapax! I'll be working the merch table this weekend - say hi, anyone who makes it down to San Mateo! Also, hapax, there's an SRL show next weekend in the North Bay, if you need more destruction.

Alas, the forecast calls for rain through Sunday, so the back of the Sycamore is not a good idea.

A couple of cheap bars come to mind for future meetups. Weekend expeditions to check the
volume of the music & crowd are strongly indicated. :)

I will try to make it to Li Po this evening around 6:30. I'm short, have uncooperative dark hair, and will be dressed in my usual "Eh, can't be bothered" style.

Another meetup I can't make it to. Unless something changes.

I miss you guys.

Had a very pleasant evening with The Whelk + SO and Doublewhiskeycokenoice. You learn the darndest things hanging around with MeFites - who knew that Icelandic bananas are straight? (Get your mind out of the gutter, you perv.)

For the record, Li Po is about the quietest bar I've been to yet (not that I'm a great connoisseur of watering holes) so I vote we add it to the list of Official MeFi Meetup Venues.

Icelandic bananas! I had a doll of a time in the little funky alcove, that was fun, we should do it again.

I hate to do this, but I'm going to say that gingerbeer and I are now maybes. We're both recovering from a heinous, heinous cold, and while we're both usually okay early in the day, by evening...

Anyway. Maybe. I hope so. But please don't hate us if we don't show up!

Ugh, me too. I'm going to try to rally but at this point I just want my bed. I am currently standing in the periodic sky spit at my elementary school's Fall Fair and am wet, cold and have pockets stuffed full of disgusting, half-used kleenex. Good times! Good thing it's for TEH CHILDREN!
