Sydney MoMU15: White wine in the (winter) sun

Sat July 26 at 3:00 PM, Courthouse Hotel
202 Australia Street, Newtown NSW 2042, Australia (Map & Directions)
Metafilter is 15! We should celebrate according to tradition for Australian 15 year olds, that is, hang out in a park and get drunk! [EDIT: Venue changed to the Courthouse Hotel, Newtown, due to overenthusiastic weather deities].
To enable some of the more far flung MeFites to attend if they so wish, we'll be meeting no a Saturday afternoon.

We've picked the nice kid-friendly Camperdown Rest Park so that people can bring MeFite progeny and let them run around.

Lest the gods judge us harshly and turn the weather against us, we can retreat to one of many Newtown boozeries or food houses - suggestions welcome.

BYO foods, booze, snacks, pic-a-nick blankets, board games, fedoras, banjos, beans.

Thoughts, feelings? Sing out.

[EDIT: The gods have turned against us! We shall, instead and in defiance of them, meet at the Courthouse Hotel for beers, like traditional Australian 17 year olds].

GLORY BE, THE FUNK'S ON ME I'LL BE THERE!

Woohoo. If we're voting I vote Wentworth or Camperdown, but I'll be there regardless.

+'s TBD, but so you may bask in my yeasty effulgence, I shall commit to bringing a variety of my sourdough breads. And maybe some of the cumquat jam I whipped up last weekend. And maybe a cake. Heh heh, somebody stop me!

One advantage to Wentworth is that it's deliciously close to the briny delights of the Sydney Fish Markets. Last time we went, I ate three and a half dozen oysters.

FYI aphrodisiac qualities grossly overstated: the most aroused either of us got was when quaffing the slimy molluscs. Afterwards, sleepily batting away gulls.

Okey doke. Shall slaughter the budget and book now.

I'll be the country cousin with a daughter with a yet-to-be-determined hair colour (it changes daily, it seems, blue last week, green the week before, violet this week) and a son who is very excited to finally meet Mefites because "they're nerds like me, mum!".

See y'all in a fortnight. Can. Not. Wait!

Shitshitshitfuckityshit.

I've booked the motel, but just got a phone call from a family member which may throw a spanner in the works.

I'm going to bed to no doubt stare at the ceiling all night and see how it all turns out over the next few days.

Insert very grumpy emoticon face here. Very very VERY grumpy face!

Yeah, it's the kid who's turning 16 that day, and had no plans whatsoever, and had requested no party or anything, and was bribed with a visit to the Police and Justice Museum on the Sunday, and is now throwing a post-concert-comedown hissy fit insisting that her brother and I should go but she'd be happy to stay at home by herself.

So we'll see how she feels tomorrow after a five hour public transport ride home. No, it might be better if we wait to see how she feels the next day... or by about Friday.

Hormonal teenage kids. Should be a law against 'em. Grmph.

Well. The thot plickens.

Firstborn has arrived home, and has offered a deal. I relax my no-facial-piercings-until-she's-18 rule, and she'll happily go to Sydney on her 16th birthday if she can get her nose pierced while she's there.

(I personally think she would totally rock the nose piercing she wants... but now I feel the need to post an AskMefi question "When my 13 year old daughter wanted a stupid tattoo, I made a blanket rule - no tattoos or piercings until you're 18. Should I eat my words, now that she's a pretty stunning 16 year old who would rock the piercing as much as she rocks the coloured hair?".)

Nerdy son was very disappointed when I said that hormonal daughter had thrown a spanner in the works. Now that hormonal daughter has offered the deal.... nerdy son will be thrilled, as will I. And the kids' father will be disgusted and her grandparents will be mortified if I allow her to have her nose pierced.

I think we might be seeing y'all on the 26th, after all.

Parenthood. Never a dull moment.

PS: can anyone recommend somewhere decent to get a nose piercing near Camperdown (motel) or wherever we're meeting up?

So.... any guidance on the park?

I'll put it down as Wentworth park for now. I don't think there's much close by in terms of pubs and food. Except the Kauri Foreshore Hotel, which I have not patronised.

We can always cab it to Glebe or something.

I'm at the stage where I wish I was born sterile.

Hopefully I'll make it for the 20th birthday meetup.

Wait, what?

Until I can make a decent gluten-free stuffing that isn't like a ball of slimy playdough flavoured with dirt, I stuff the chook with a couple of lemon halves and a couple of onion halves and whatever herbs are wilting sadly in the fridge. Then I have to pin the chooks bum shut so the onion and lemon doesn't fall out when I wrestle it to turn it over halfway though cooking.

Doesn't everyone use a nappy pin to skewer a chooks bum shut?!?

(I never used nappy pins on actual nappies... I used those funky stretchy elastic three-pronged things. Brilliant invention.)

Bon soir mes amis, I've been AWOL for a couple of weeks indulging in one of my favourite obsessions (The French Revolution, doing a MOOC on it - what did you think? Shoes? Chocolate? Ha! I'm deep I tell you.)

I thought more people would have signed up for this by now. Maybe this isn't the Popular Group. Attending might be bad for my reputation. Still ... it is Newtown, you can't get any cooler than that, unless you go to Fitzroy. I tell these country hicks round here I'm off to Newie and they look all sad and ask me to bring back some art.

Ah fuckit, if I stay home I'm only going to be staring at the internet in my pajamas wondering how long I can put off going outside to get more wood for the fire. Trains are warm. They let you read books about the French Revolution on trains. And when I get to the party we'll eat cake!

Good, that's settled then. See ya there, citizens.

Just to complicate things.... I've found the Courty tends to be very noisy & busy on Saturday afternoons; I couldn't handle taking the kids there. The garden also isn't covered as such - just umbrellas. On the upside that may mean it's not so busy!

However I live quite close by so I can easily pop by for a drink and leave the family at home :)

Coopers bistro looks like it has a covered area. I don't know how popular it'd be in the afternoon?

Other possibilities very close by:
- the Bank Hotel which has a lot of covered outdoor space and probably won't be crowded as it's huge
- the Carlisle Castle which is small, doesn't have a great beer garden but we can probably hang out in the bistro dining room which is fairly kid friendly. And it has ghosts!

Another bit of bad news - inner west train line is closed for trackwork all weekend...

I had it all organised to catch the train back to Newcastle after meet-up and stay with a pal there overnight, wending my way home the last 70kms in relaxed style with car on Sunday morning. I could have coped with getting a bus from Central to Newtown, even in the rain, but I have experienced the train-bus awfulness on the Sydney-Newcastle line before and it takes f o r e v e r. I am close, bus pulling into newton station, five or ten minutes. Should i pick up some drinks?

I'm sitting on a tree opposite the court house.

Ok, going to the park. Get those drinks, smoke.

I have a bottle of wine and we won't be drinking much of it ourselves so feel free to freeload :)

My bottle of wine and I are on the bus. I will need to procure some caffeine, but will be there soon.

Happy Birthday to you,
Happy brithday to you,
You look like a mefite,
And you smell like one too!

PICS OR IT DIDN'T HAPPEN!

Seriously, hope y'all had a blast, and I hope none of you are sober enough now to respond to this.

Stacey we never saw that big orange thing here at all. I have damp firewood drying out on top of the old Coonara.

Home at last, great afternoon guys. Lollusc, I hope Victoria road met with your approval. Thanks all for coming out, it has been a long time between drinks for me!

Three thing in the planning in future:
1) park play date with small peeps near smoke and the wisps
2) pub trivia
3) board game night at my place with momos and chilli (and big smoke).

Ami I not big enough for you? This is about the deck, isn't it. I love momos.
posted by smoke at 2:22 AM on July 26, 2014

Items 1) to 3) agreed, mighty taff. Except I don't know what a momo is, so holding off on approving them till I'm better informed. Are there chickpeas involved?

4) Valetta to check ahead on trackwork schedule in time to make alternative arrangements. Only hippies expect to travel without a plan B.

PICS OR IT DIDN'T HAPPEN!

There are pics! Somewhere. Someone took some.

Victoria Road was indeed a much more pleasant drive even though Google constantly nagged us to change direction. The Mollusc was a little unhappy about it, though, as I kept going ooh and aah at the pretty view and he was stuck glaring at tail lights and intersections instead.

Wot! No pictures? Here's mine. And to show you I was thinking of you all. With a special shoutout to valetta (though in typical mefi fashion, it's misspelled).

That edit window shows no mercy. "Time's up! No I can't wait. You snooze, you lose." Bastard.

And to show you I was thinking of you all.

Ha! Awesome. You utterly heartless bastard. I hope you got some of that gorgeous white sand in some sensitive crevices.

3) board game night at my place with momos and chilli (and big smoke).

I nominate Cards Against Humanity. Misfish also demands a round of Pucket, which I think y'all would enjoy. Best served with booze and shouting.

Hey, belatedly chiming in to say it was great fun!

I'm up for something else for sure; any of the above.

Oh and lollusc... What were those amazing sweet things you brought? They are so much better than any scone I've encountered before?
posted by 8k at 6:12 AM on July 30, 2014

They were a fail-version of Pioneer Woman's vanilla scones, which I found by searching metafilter for things to make to showcase vanilla. (I bought a bottle of 300ml of real vanilla extract in Mexico recently for a ridiculous $5 and now I am vanilla-flavouring ALL THE THINGS).

It was the first time I had baked scones in the oven in our new house, and it turned out that either it is completely lying about what temperature it is at, or the 180 C her recipe requires is way too low for scones (as I suspected in advance, given that my other scone recipes require 220 C). So they took about 40 minutes to cook and hardly rose at all.

Then I adjusted the sugar glaze recipe to a cooked one with normal sugar instead of uncooked with icing sugar, and never managed to get the crystals to melt, which is why they were all crunchy like that.

But although it was a fail at being scone-like or approximating the PW recipe, they were quite tasty as their own sort of thing, weren't they?

(They are so much better than any scone I've encountered before?

Twice as much butter, added cream, and lots of sugar will have that sort of effect.)

Heh, I love a recipe that fails well! Thanks!
