American Public Health Assn San Francisco Meetup~
posted October 19, 2012 8:53 AM   RSS

APHA is holding its annual meeting in San Francisco 10/27-10/31. I was wondering if any Metafilter folks are coming for APHA and, if so, would you like to schedule a meetup?
I work for the San Francisco Dept of Public Health, and am involved in a few sessions. If people are interested, I might be able to connect folks with SFDPH efforts PLUS I'd love to meet other public health Metafilterians.

Anyone interested? We could meet before, during, or after the meeting (or all three!).

Did anyone see that there's an app for this conference? I'm a little concerned it will be so big I will never see anyone.

I will certainly be there, and was counting on seeing Stewriffic, but happy to see more mefites!

I have a poster on Monday and am moderating a session on Tuesday and have a bunch of other commitments but definitely want to see people.

Yeah, I'm doing a session Monday morning.

If people are here on Saturday.

I work at UCSF and will be around (tabling, grad school fair, sneaking into sessions when I can). Any day but Tuesday works well for me. I'll be at a difference conference on Saturday, in Colorado.

OK, I have a friend who is willing to come up from Palo Alto that I'd like to see, and the only day he is able to come is actually Tuesday. (sorry verbyournouns...maybe we can all have a daytime coffee meetup, too?)

I have a session I need to go to that ends at 6 on Tuesday. After that is good for me.

How about something on Saturday the 27th? It's the first day, there will be registration, etc. Maybe we could all get together and help each other find amazing sessions to go to (in addition to drinking)?

Like maybe Saturday late afternoon-ish? House of Shields is close by and we had a meetup there many years ago. Thirsty Bear is also close by. Never been there but it always looks pleasant.

I'd be up for that!

Can someone explain to me how to get from the Castro to the Moscone Center on public transportation? I am no stranger to metros, but is the Muni a metro and is it a good idea to get the 7-day pass? I am staying here.

Holy crap, Thirsty Bear is all Spanish Tapas-y, but seriously so. I like!

Yes, get the 7 day pass, and it's super easy. Take the F train for the slower, more scenic route above ground, or go into the Castro St Metro station and take any train in bound. Get off at Powell or Montgomery - Moscone's sort of half way between the 2 - and walk south 2 blocks to Howard St .

Thanks, love!

Oh, sorry, just saw where you're staying - still super easy, but you want to get on the J Church, which runs right past there and goes downtown. Catch it at the corner of Dolores Park, inbound. No need to walk to Castro St unless you want to.

It looks like all that's happening Saturday afternoon at the convention is the all-day learning institutes and they go to 5.

I'm not signed up for any of those, are any of you all? If not, how about 3:30ish at the Thirsty Bear?

Also, it looks like it's just the three of us have responded here. I don't have anything against small meetups, but seems like there should be others too? Should we repost this and emphasize the meetup part with APHA being a smaller sub-emphasis?

Any ideas?

I'll be sad to miss y'all, but if anyone will be at the "biostatistics for non-statisticians" or "social norms marketing interventions" all-day sessions on Sunday (I'm undecided), maybe I'll see you there!

verbyournouns, if you're not available Saturday afteroon, is there some better time that would work for you?

This is kind of hard to plan, isn't it? I don't have any good ideas.

I now have a work-related APHA event on Saturday evening, but it's a reception with free drinks, if you feel like hanging out in an APHA conference room with a bunch of Canadians and harm reductionists. It's 6-7:30, and I may have some prep tasks, but otherwise I'm free on Saturday. And there's a MeFi Halloween party in the East Bay that evening which should be a whole lot of fun.

I might be able show up at the gingerbeer Canadian reception - in fact, my daughter (who lives in Montreal) is here for the conference so it might be perfect. Where will it be held?

OTOH, I noticed that though the Giants will be in Detroit on Saturday, the World Series will be broadcast at around 5 that night, so getting together Saturday afternoon at a bar with TV sets will be fun/insane/probably not best for a meetup.

If we want to get together on Saturday, it could be earlier in the day (like lunch?) Same thing goes for Sunday. The game will be at 5 again, but we could get together earlier. Or one of the weekday evenings?

So my thing is at the Marriott Marquis hotel, in room Pacific F, 6-7:30 pm. It's the launch event for an exhibit, and a few people will say a few words, myself included, but otherwise it's just networking with free food and drink. I'm happy to memail more info to anyone. Stewriffic and jasper both know what I look like -- if anyone else is planning to attend, memail me.

Gingerbeer, is this anything I could sneak my partner into, or will there be strict checks at the door for badges?
posted by Stewriffic at 8:02 AM on October 27, 2012

It's intentionally open to anyone - no conference badge needed.
posted by gingerbeer at 9:00 AM on October 27, 2012

NICE! We'll be there then.

Oh, and if you think i need more info, go ahead and memail me it. Can't wait to see you!

That was a lovely, intimate gathering last night! Glad to witness.
