Wow, I'm flattered! I'll be in town starting October 30, though I think that night I'll probably be pretty bushed.

can we just meet up november 1st, then? i hesitate to recommend halloween because meeting a bunch of people in costume is less-than-ideal.

unless you're the only person in costume

if you're flying, i hope you're flying into burbank. oh! i should put that in the thread. brb.

Ha, yeah. I'm considering bringing my Halloween costume along (my NYC goodbye party is going to be a Halloween party), but it involves bulky headgear I'm not willing to wear on a plane.

November 1 would be fine. I'd also be up for an election returns thing the following week, if folks are up for it. Where do people go to watch election returns in LA? Is that even a thing? Because being in a bar when Obama won in 2008 was one of the best things, ever.

And, sadly, I am flying into LAX. But I'm not too bothered about it. I've dealt with LAX before, and let me tell you, it's no La Guardia.

the election returns shinding sounds awesome!

can we have an election-returns/point-break-themed costume party? (totally not helping. sorry.)
posted by raihan_ at 10:05 AM on September 27, 2012

I like the election returns idea, too. I'm not sure where to suggest we go. I tried some searching to find a place, but I'm not getting any results.

In 2008 I watched it in a sort of divey neighborhood place in the East Village that was my local at the time.

Please tell me there are dive bars in Los Angeles.
posted by Sara C. at 11:39 AM on September 27, 2012

There are definitely dive bars in Los Angeles!

Where in LA you gonna be, Sara? That'll give us a better idea of where to make the meetup.

(There are dive bars all over LA. Some of 'em are better than others. Weirdly, I think my favorites are in the Valley and on the outskirts like Atwater Village and Culver City. But there are good ones downtown too. I actually got paid a couple years ago to go to a whole bunch of them.)
posted by klangklangston at 12:16 PM on September 28, 2012

I'm actually leaning towards a place in East L.A. If I don't take that apartment, I'm more and more strongly thinking somewhere in the world of Silverlake/Echo Park/Atwater Village/etc.

That said, I'll be staying in Hollywood my first few nights, and then if I don't move into something permanently right away I have a few couch surfing offers.

We really don't have to center the location around me. I get that L.A. is big, but as the n00b I feel like it behooves me to explore different parts of town. I have no problem sitting in traffic to get to an inconvenient location, or getting lost, or any of that stuff.
posted by Sara C. at 1:47 PM on September 28, 2012

Heh. What do you mean by East L.A.? Like, Boyle Heights? (The geographical designation is a matter of some dispute).

Hollywood is decently big but generally close enough to the red line that you can get around.

What kind of dive bars are your favorites?
posted by klangklangston at 2:38 PM on September 28, 2012

The kind with shuffleboard.
posted by carsonb at 3:20 PM on September 28, 2012

I know two bars with shuffleboard, but both are West West West.
posted by klangklangston at 4:39 PM on September 28, 2012

It's in "City Terrace", which is apparently sort of close to Boyle Heights. It's just south of the 10.

I will drink in almost any bar that doesn't have people openly prostituting themselves in it (yes, this is a line I have tested before.)

In my experience bars with big TVs are best for election return watching, also bars where there isn't some super important game on. My gut says that fewer people in L.A. are into watching election returns in bars than is standard for New York, but I guess I could be wrong.
posted by Sara C. at 4:46 PM on September 28, 2012

You are not wrong about that. A NY-based friend and I searched for a bar (in the Silverlake/Echo Park/Downtown area) to watch Obama's speech at the convention and couldn't find anything. Half the places we called didn't even know what we were talking about, and the other half had the VMA awards or a game on.
posted by ljshapiro at 5:43 PM on September 28, 2012

They will probably know it's election day, though. I hope ;)
posted by ljshapiro at 5:44 PM on September 28, 2012 [1 favorite]

Aside from the fact that we were watching it at home, when I was on the west side, there were a bunch of bars that advertised that they were showing Obama's victory. Drinking Liberally is a good place to start.

City Terrace is supposed to be pretty nice — I have a bunch of coworkers that just moved there. (Their view of "pretty nice" may not be mine, given their last place, but whatevs. Post-college multiple roomies style.)

I think that's got Gold Line access, which is the nicest of the trains ('cuz it goes to Pasadena, where people have money and wouldn't use a scuzzy train.)

Yay Hollywood! That's where I'm a Viking!

For dive bars in Hollywood, look no further than Cahuenga Blvd., between Hollywood and Sunset. The Burgundy Room is a favorite for serious divers. Further north just off Cahuenga is the Parlour Room, which is authentically divey. Piano Bar is also popular, and has live entertainment.

Less divey, but possibly interesting is a new place called "Super Bar" which is a comics/cosplay themed bar located at the Improv Olympic. It appears to be only open on weekends at this point. I haven't been yet, but lots of friends have recommended it.
posted by ShutterBun at 1:19 PM on September 29, 2012

Yeah. From my research on the neighborhood it seems like a relatively OK-ish area. Lots of people snapping up cool old houses with low property values and flipping them. It reminds me a lot of the distant frontiers of gentrification I've tended to live in here in New York.

It's a couple miles from the Gold Line. I have a fantasy of eventually getting a bike and doing a multi-modal commute. As I remind myself that I have not seen this apartment yet, do not live there yet, and need to stop creating a pretend fantasy life for myself surrounding an apartment I don't have in a neighborhood I've never laid eyes on.

I would be all jaw-droppy that there's a cosplay themed bar in Hollywood, but we have a steampunk/Dr Who themed bar in Brooklyn. It's still fucking rad, though.

You want a steampunk bar? Try The Edison (flash site)

I'm very impressed with how openly into fandom Angelenos seem to be. I feel like, on the East Coast, it's either something people are closety about, or people pretend that it's really about something else/bigger than just that particular scene. I don't know if that has to do with the entertainment industry, or if it's just the laid back and open culture which doesn't have pretensions to High Art, but it's one of the things I'm most excited about.

The Dresden Room is a special sort of dive in E. Hollywood/Los Feliz where legendary lounge act Marty & Elayne have performed for years. If we go though we should avoid Sundays -- I think we made that mistake once after a meetup and there was a HORRIBLE blues-rock band there instead.
posted by speicus at 9:59 AM on September 30, 2012

If the aim is dive, then there's always the Smog Cutter. I know we've talked of meeting up there, but I don't think we ever made it. I'm also a fan of Frank and Hanks on Western, but it's a bit small. I think I paid $4 for my (jim beam) bourbon there last time.

I'm at least 10 years out of my element here, but does HMS Bounty still count?

(I can't believe Marty and Elaine are still around! That warms my heart.)

I know that we've ended up at the Smogcutter on a meet-up, but I don't really remember how we got there. Bob drove me home.

He also drove me home from the HMS Bounty, where I know we've started a meetup.

But I'd love to give it a try at the beginning of a night, rather than the end.

Just wanted to mention Villains Tavern as a steampunk bar.

Hey guys -- small change of plans that might be relevant.

I just got called on a last minute job and will now be arriving to LA on election day itself. It would still be cool to have folks to watch the returns with, but I'll probably be up for a little less driving around and being lost in LA. I'm spending my first night at some youth hostel right near Hollywood and Vine. Another Red Line location would also be OK -- I'm very used to navigating unfamiliar public transit while jetlagged.

Or we could just have the meetup be a different day and not an election returns deal at all.

(This reminds me I need to call the hostel and make sure I can move my reservation... ugh... work...)

Hey and welcome! I live right by Hollywood and Vine. Some options near that part of Hollywood...

Parlour Room (huge, good cocktails, almost never super busy)
Power House (locals dive right in the middle of the Hollywood/Highland monstrosity)
Birds (in Franklin Village next to UCB; sometimes gets crowded)

And my personal favorite Eat Hollywood dive, at Sunset and Western:

White Horse Inn

I can walk to Villians.
posted by Ideefixe at 6:53 PM on October 8, 2012

I meant 'East Hollywood.' I have no idea what 'Eat Hollywood' is. Probably a blog.

Also, lots of good stuff downtown near the Red Line stop. Golden Gopher comes to mind.

Heh, my wife and I drive by The White Horse all the time, but have never been in. We always vow to stop in "next time", then spend the next few minutes singing "If you wanna ride...don't ride the White Horse."
posted by ShutterBun at 10:36 AM on October 10, 2012

I like the idea of the White Horse! I haven't been there in years, but I remember the bartender would serve us free food when she felt like it.
posted by mandymanwasregistered at 10:38 AM on October 10, 2012

I want to try the White Horse too.

For Sara C: It's not that far from the Hollywood and Western Red Line station.
posted by klangklangston at 12:10 PM on October 10, 2012 [1 favorite]

The White Horse looks great!

However, I think election returns are off -- I just changed my flight and won't arrive at LAX till 8pm. By the time I get my checked luggage, pick up my rental car, drive to Hollywood, and check into my hostel, the window for meetups will probably be over.

But I still think the White Horse looks perfect! Sorry I'm suddenly being such a flake about this meetup you guys are having for me...

Can we call it the White Horse at... whatever time y'all usually have meetups... on Nov 8? That's a Thursday.
posted by Sara C. at 12:25 PM on October 10, 2012

Sounds like White Horse is a best bet. And yep, it's real close to the Hollywood/Western Red Line station.

Which hostel are you staying at, Sara? (I see two near Hollywood/Vine, one slightly east, one slightly west)

Also, depending on the crowd's particular sensibilities vis-a-vis burlesque dancers, etc. I'd nominate Jumbo's Clown Room for some sexy, divey goodness, or perhaps Harvard & Stone, which is sort of a hipster-meets-steampunk kinda place that's pretty decent.
posted by ShutterBun at 10:38 PM on October 11, 2012

Let's avoid Villains if possible; it can be a fun bar, but Sara C. is new to LA, and it would probably be for the best that her early impressions of living here not be based on one of the sketchiest neighborhoods in the city.
posted by Parasite Unseen at 6:28 PM on October 15, 2012

OK for whatever reason I didn't go to the last meetup that wound up at Jumbo's Clown Room, and I've regretted it ever since. So if that were to happen again for this I would be a happy me, TIA.
posted by carsonb at 6:36 PM on October 15, 2012

I can't believe I missed a meetup than ended up at Jumbo's. That place is practically a second home.

Is there a plan? with a date and a place and a time?
posted by Ideefixe at 7:02 AM on October 28, 2012

Ohhhhh Kayyyyy.

It's been a long week here in New York. As I think you guys can imagine.

But my flight hasn't been canceled, and my job is allowing me to telecommute for the last week of our production, so it looks like this is really happening.

Let's say the White Horse Inn on Thursday, November 10. Does that sound good? What time do meetups usually happen there? I feel like New York ones are usually ~7pm?

Sorry, guys, I'm not really up for casually hanging out at strip clubs quite yet. Unless I drastically misunderstood all the yelp reviews for Jumbo's Clown Room and it is not really "that kind of" strip club or it's all some kind of elaborate strip club themed ironic entertainment experience.

How do we bring this event from "proposed" to "happening"?
posted by Sara C. at 7:41 AM on November 4, 2012

White Horse on Thursday sounds good to me. For another perspective on Jumbo's, and why it's more interesting than your usual sleazy strip club, here's a link to a column Ron Rosenbaum wrote for the Observer a long time ago (Jumbo's description is in the first few paragraphs):

As Bubba the Clown Departs, the Hour of the Prig Descends

(Ron very briefly references a conversation with me in this link, the first time I was mentioned in the press, and the only reason I remember this piece of writing at all.)

Just went to put this in my calendar: did you mean Thursday, November 8th (rather than 10th)?

Hey, guys, so super-for-real I don't know how to turn this into a real event and not just a proposed one.

I fly today, and I have a long couple days ahead of me doing moving stuff.

Can someone figure out how to make this a real meetup so other folks will know about it?

Thanks! I'm here, now, at this crazy party hostel full of Australians on Hollywood kind of by Gower-ish. And Obama is going to be the president again! And I ate amazing tacos! And I'm very jet-lagged right now!

See you guys Thursday!
