High noon on Sunday, June 3rd, rain or shine -- Post Hunt is on. Do Mefites have what it takes to win, or will we pick at a puzzle or two and then go for drinks? (Either sounds good to me!) posted by EvaDestruction to Meetup (11 comments total) 1 user marked this as a favorite

Oh, wow! I just recently moved here from Miami, where Dave Barry and Gene Weingarten originated the game for the Miami Herald's late Sunday magazine, Tropic. (The name was changed after a couple of broadcasters ran into difficulty saying "Tropic Hunt" with a straight face.) I had no idea there was a local Hunt.

I will do my best to arrange things to participate. Have any other local Mefites done a Hunt?

I'm going to be out of town this weekend. Blast. After six+ years of mostly lurking, you'd think I'd make it to a meetup someday.

Ooh. This could be doable.

I did the 2009 Post Hunt, mkhall, which is how I know a potential outcome is giving up and going for drinks. It was fun, bad presidential puns and all!

Tropic. (The name was changed after a couple of broadcasters ran into difficulty saying "Tropic Hunt" with a straight face.)

Actually the name was only changed after the Herald shuttered the Tropic magazine, almost 10 years later. As far as this former Miamian is concerned it will always be the Tropic Hunt. An old Miami friend of mine runs a website with a somewhat obsessively detailed history.

Sadly I'll be missing this one, my first since it came to down. I've got family in from out of town so I am going to leave it to all of you to proudly continue my almost 30 year tradition of not winning.

I may have more than one group of semi-pro puzzlers to meet, but I'd love to at least see and be seen for a while at some point during the day. Getting mefites together for the Mystery Hunt, I know how much fun commiserating can be. Or maybe we morph into a superteam to fight crime. Wait, no, solve puzzles.

I'll be there with a cat with laser eyes shirt on. I plan on winning.

Ah, I am happy to see that site is still around! Yes, the name had to be changed when Tropic shut down, but to whatever degree you're willing to trust Dave Barry's explanation, it would have been changed, anyway.

For those who have never participated in a Hunt, you will be surprised at how you will still remember the puzzles you got wrong, years and years from now. How could I have failed to realize that the password would be BOOGER when Barry was writing it? Not that it would have mattered, because instead of giving the password to the art director dressed as a "Bum," a befuddled homeless man who wandered into the designated bus station was accosted by dozens of frantic Hunters shouting "BOOGER!" at him. I was so close, so very close...

Yes, it will always be the Tropic Hunt to me, too.

Here's the update, everybody -- persona definitely has a team, I am happy to leave it up to the morning of if folks need to settle out their schedules, but I'm planning to go to Point Chaud (1012 14th Street NW) around 11 for crepes and caffeine, and be at the park by 11:45. If you can meet there, great otherwise I suggest MeMailing me to exchange phone numbers so we can meet up at the park.

If anybody's at Point Chaud, I'm running late but will be there soon.
