MeFi IRL

In the past I've tried doing meetups at DragonCon, at specific times and places there, and I only ever met one person that way. So I gave up. Now I'm doing it again, but differently. I'm going to be at DragonCon this year. If you're also going to be there, let me know and we can communicate and try to say hi in person over Labor Day Weekend. Nothing huge, just a chance to bump into interesting people and maybe go to related panels or get in board games or the like. I'm going alone and it'd be nice to actually see people that I know (even if just in the MeFi online kind of way).

Labor Day Weekend is fast approaching in Atlanta which means time again for Nerdi Gras, or as it's more properly known, DragonCon! A general "everything" fandom convention run mainly on volunteer labor, in contrast to conventions that are driven by the marketing departments of major mass media outlets, it's 5 days of fun spread across several city-block sized convention hotels. Going by past year's IRL posts, there's usually roughly a dozen or so MeFites on average who on any given year. That's out of a crowd of 80,000+ attendees, so chances are we'll never run into each other. But the central host hotel also was once The Capitol District's Tribute Training Center a few years ago, so May The Odds Be Ever In Your Favor. [more inside]

DragonCon 2018 is nigh and the schedule app update is out. Past years have proven that an actual designated time & place for a mefi meetup is logistically unlikely, but, just wanted to open a thread for roll call/friend code exchange/panel postmortems, etc. [more inside]

Labor Day weekend is almost upon us again, and that means DragonCon in Atlanta. (Please don't call it Dragon*Con, they had their *-hole removed two years ago at no small expense.) There's a significant number of MeFites who love Guillermo del Toro's robots-punchan-monsters film, Pacific Rim. Shatterdome Atlanta is in its second year and is expanding to 2 days -- June 13 and 14. It's a fun little niche con (I'm on staff). We've got some cool prizes and guests, but above all else, we just want to geek out together about this awesome movie. [more inside]

Several years previously, I've tried to hold meetups at DragonCon, and I practically never find anyone. There is really no reason to believe it'll be any different this time, but I'm posting this anyway, as a place for everyone to say if they're going and make plans, whether they will be thwarted or not. At the very least there is the awesome BOARD GAMING ROOM, a huge packed room containing a table heaped with hundreds of board games to check out, sufficient reason to attend the convention all by itself. Dragoncon is nearly here again, who else is going? Judging by previous years, it's unlikely that we can coordinate an actual meet-up once the con gets rolling, but I wanted to open a thread so we can at least say hello to each other in MeFiIRL if not in actual RL. Any MeFites at the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene in Atlanta this year? It's coming to an end, but there might be time to grab a drink and meet your fellow parasitology/ epidemiology/ microbiology/ health policy wonks. Tonight is the last evening, but it's possible to have a post-meeting lunch tomorrow afternoon. Meet at the Marquis Marriott, then select a second location for drinks and/or lunch?

Dragon*Con is nearly upon us again, who's going this year?
