Ignoring the Super Bowl Party - February 5th, 2012

Sun February 5 at 3:00 PM, Greg_Ace's house
4414 SE Center St, Portland, OR, USA (Map & Directions)
It's official. We will be ignoring the Super Bowl at Greg_Ace's house.
As usual, we'll do this potluck style, so please mention what you'd like to bring.

Also, we should get an idea of what games we'd like to play.

1KBWC is cool. Or movie-watching, or any other indoor activity that can be enjoyed alongside beer.
posted by Greg_Ace at 4:43 PM on January 3, 2012

I like the use of the 'ignoring' tag. We could serially ignore a whole bunch of things for future meetups.
posted by mimo at 5:43 PM on January 3, 2012 [1 favorite]

Or, if we're really ambitious, we could attempt to ignore multiple things at once! Though that would probably work less (or more...??) well if sufficient beer was involved.

or any other indoor activity that can be enjoyed alongside beer.

Isn't.. isn't that every indoor activity?
posted by curious nu at 6:43 PM on January 3, 2012

Depends on one's definition of "sufficient beer", really.

Also: sobriety tests, building matchstick models, interventions, Christmas Eve toy assemblies, delicate and/or potentially fatal chemical experiments, use of firearms and explosives, intricate figurine painting, and most church services are right out. Not to mention certain other, shall we say, intimate and vigorous tasks I can think of.

And seeing as how I'm now sporting a (thankfully, small) bandage on one finger, covering an injury incurred whilst preparing a post-Happy Hour dinner, I'd like to add "sharp knives" to that list.

use of firearms and explosives

From what I have observed, this is greatly dependent on geographic location and/or economic background.
posted by nickthetourist at 7:41 PM on January 3, 2012

Fair enough; attentive and responsible use of same, then.
posted by Greg_Ace at 8:22 PM on January 3, 2012

I can't ignore more than one thing at a time. Perhaps we could each be assigned a different thing to ignore, thereby increasing our collective ignorance load.
posted by mimo at 8:33 PM on January 3, 2012

I certainly could increase our ignorance load...

Sorry, but I'm betting my wife would think I was ignoring our anniversary. Go on and ignore something for me.
posted by klausman at 4:20 PM on January 4, 2012

So, Caldera? Someplace on the west side? Where? When? Kickoff isn't until 6:30pm. Do we have to ignore the game while it's going on?

We will ignore your anniversary for you, klausman.
posted by mimo at 6:29 PM on January 4, 2012

mimo: Kickoff isn't until 6:30pm.

Is that EST or PST? I suspect it's EST since it would be rather late otherwise.

Also, we must consider that the pregame analysis show usually starts at least 3 hours prior to kickoff and the game is followed by an awards ceremony and post game analysis.
I figure that's roughly 12 hours, maybe more, to ignore.

klausman: Sorry, but I'm betting my wife would think I was ignoring our anniversary.

Don't worry, there will be future meetups and game days, and I am waiting for a Power Grid rematch.
posted by nickthetourist at 8:57 PM on January 4, 2012

I figure that's roughly 12 hours, maybe more, to ignore.

But if we were truly committed to pointedly ignoring the entire thing, it'd be hard to find a pub that would tolerate us for that long unless we continually spent a fair sum of money on beer and food. We might need to settle for a shorter gathering period...starting at 3-ish, maybe? And then assume as read a certain amount of Intentional Ignoring aforethought; or vow to ignore twice as hard once we get there, to make up the difference.

Secondly: while I'm all for choosing pubs near me for the sake of my own personal convenience, it seems like we almost always end up at one in the SE area, which is a bit unfair to people who live in other parts of town - especially if they're traveling by public transit. I have no suggestions, just throwing the idea out there for discussion...
posted by Greg_Ace at 9:43 PM on January 4, 2012

nick, you are correct. I was trying to determine the kickoff time while simultaneously ignoring it and was only partially successful in doing either.
posted by mimo at 10:20 PM on January 4, 2012

I am waiting for a Power Grid rematch.
Indeed. Have you played Kingsburg?
posted by klausman at 3:48 PM on January 5, 2012

Have you played Kingsburg?

No, but it does sound interesting.

As for location, the east side has the best options, with Caldera probably being the most ideal since they lack a television. Most pubs with TVs will likely have those TVs tuned to game.

And there is always a certain MeFite's house, if he's willing to host us once again.
posted by nickthetourist at 5:09 PM on January 5, 2012

I don't have problem with that, if we want to go that route. And since I don't own a television, we won't need to worry about inadvertently catching a glimpse of the game and ruining everything. That also means we need to plan to provide our own food and beverages, of course; but that hasn't historically been a problem for us.
posted by Greg_Ace at 6:44 PM on January 5, 2012

Lets put this to a vote then:

Greg's house or Caldera?
posted by nickthetourist at 7:06 PM on January 5, 2012

I'm fine with either. I just want to be sure that every knows they are welcome no matter where we meet. I am always happy to see the regular attendees, but it's great to see new faces too.
posted by mimo at 7:46 PM on January 5, 2012

Same here. More than once I've wondered whether our frequent meetups might inadvertently end up looking like "oh, it's that particular clique getting together again, I'll wait and show up when a real Metafilter Meetup happens." But it's not like that at all; mimo speaks truly for all of us.

I'm think I'll make the executive decision to have this at Greg's house, unless he changes his mind.
I figure this can potentially save us some $$$ while increasing the quantity of drink and eats.

By the way, since this is the currently open games-related IRL post, I'll pitch an idea here for a future Game Day meetup:

Inspired by hippybear's thread to watch the Quite Interesting show, which I didn't know about and is utterly brilliant, and pondering ways to justify my investment in multiple "genus edition" packs, I got the rather inventive (if I do say so myself) idea to re-purpose my Trivial Pursuit game cards to create something more along the lines of the QI show - where it's less essential to give the correct answer than to give a clever and entertaining one. We could devise our own scoring system and award points by group consensus for creative or funny responses.

Or actually, as I think about it while composing this comment, maybe there's a way to incorporate the above idea into 1KBWC games. For instance, add a few "QI" cards to the deck that require the player who draws one to then draw a TP card and provide an artful reply to one of the questions on that card.

Just a couple of thoughts....

Oh, I dunno; maybe later on in the evening, when everyone's feelin' mellow...

More seriously, I'm considering a smoked-chicken-salad-type spread to go with crackers or chips, as well as something else like maybe pico de gallo dip or bruschetta for any non-meat-eaters. I hadn't decided, really; just batting a few ideas around. I'm open to suggestions.

Anyway....will anyone be bringing games?
If so, what?
posted by nickthetourist at 6:38 PM on February 2, 2012

I gather Specklet isn't coming so 1KBWC is out. Of course I have Trivial Pursuit here, but even with the concept of the QI-flavored play version I mentioned earlier I don't know how popular that would be. I also have Pictionary, a deck of cards, Othello, Backgammon, and Dominos. After that I'm tapped out, so c'mon you guys, step up to the plate! if that's not the wrong metaphor for an ignore-football meetup
posted by Greg_Ace at 8:45 PM on February 2, 2012

We could bring Star Fluxx, Uno, Milles Borne, Illuminati, Talisman, Munchkin, Monopoly, Fuck You (aka Sorry), Clue....
posted by nickthetourist at 10:23 PM on February 2, 2012

But not Futurama Monopoly, right? Because no one is interested in that.
posted by mimo at 8:14 AM on February 3, 2012

I've got a few games I could bring! Carcassone, Settlers of Catan, Fluxx (what is star fluxx?!), Citadels (I don't think I've played that one yet? It might be only two players), and of course there's Arkham Horror...

There's a lot more, but I'm kind of drawing a blank from here at work, I'll ask cortex to go look in the closet and report what he sees.
posted by Secretariat at 8:45 AM on February 3, 2012

There's also Space Alert if we feel like shouting at each other a lot; Apples to Apples; Zombie Dice; Dominion; D&D Inn Fighting. Citadels is up to four players I think.

Man, Arkham Horror. It'd eat up a couple hours at least but it's been a while.
posted by cortex at 8:49 AM on February 3, 2012

How is that D&D Inn Fighting? Is it dumb? The name of the game sounds dumb.
posted by Secretariat at 8:52 AM on February 3, 2012

It's probably dumb! I haven't played it yet, actually, but a few other folks did. mimo? I think maybe mimo played it.
posted by cortex at 9:20 AM on February 3, 2012

I may have watched nick, nu, and dorey play it. It seemed no more dumb than any of the other games we play.
posted by mimo at 9:28 AM on February 3, 2012

D&D Inn Fighting is fairly dumb. It's, uh, pretty D&D-y, which is amusing/interesting if you're a nerdy game nerd but not so fun if you just want to enjoy a game.

I imagine AH would consume in its ravenous non-Euclidean maw at least 4 hours. And then we'd all lose at the end. It's one of those games. I'd say bring it!
posted by curious nu at 9:52 AM on February 3, 2012

I'm voting for Pictionary.
posted by mimo at 9:56 AM on February 3, 2012

Yeah, at least I know the rules of the game now- I remember when we were trying to teach ourselves how to play, without a human guide, we'd spend an entire day trying to get through each of our first few practice games.

For food- maybe I'll bring something bread-like? What's missing? More snackies? Maybe wine- I find that goes nicely with Arkham Horror.

posted by mimo at 10:09 AM on February 3, 2012

The current menu compiled from the comments above assuming I didn't miss any:

beer (some)
cheese ball + vegetables
hummus (maybe)
sausages + peppers

Further thoughts:

chips and/or crackers + dips
fruits
nuts
smoked meats

posted by mimo at 10:19 AM on February 3, 2012

Now I want to see a short film that called Pictionary in Arkham that would seem for the first two thirds like the inexplicable documentation of a plain old game of Pictionary: shots of people drawing, people looking on, guessing, laughing, naming ordinary things ("dog!", "is it a bathtub? no, oh, sailboat!", "how did you get 'adversity' from three lines?", etc).

Then the reveal would show the actual drawing were detailed sketches of Elder Gods and other sundry Lovecraftian horrors. Wide shot reveals players to be in a facility, under observation by dead-eyed psychiatrist types from behind mirrored glass.

Oh, and re: smoked meats...I'm going to smoke a chicken, but then mix all the meat in with a pico de gallo type salsa and make quesadillas with that and some cheese. I can also make a non-meat 'dilla or three if requested.

That and beer will pretty much tap out my food budget this month. But if any of you want to contribute chunks o'meat for smoking, bring them by my house this evening or Saturday noon at the ABSOTIVELY POSILUTELY LATEST, and I'll pop'em in the smoker for all to enjoy on Sunday. 503-616-1859 if you have any questions.

But you can drive past the partial obstruction on the weekends, or as curious nu says take a slight detour (from 42nd, turn left on Francis - the block before Center, turn right at the end of the first block, then left onto Center and my house is on the right).
