Let's do classic card games. Cortex mentioned poker at the last one, and I love gin. As a game, not a drink.
posted by fiercekitten at 6:37 PM on November 2, 2011

Hearts! Spades! Bridge! Cribbage! Euchre!

I know how to play one of those and have played the others once or fivece over the years and would enjoy playing them again.
posted by curious nu at 8:43 PM on November 2, 2011

I could do the first or second Saturday of Dec, any time of day. (Well, starting late late is not grand, due to the drive home. As late as 5 or 6 would be fine.)

The Sundays of those weekends may work, but are less likely. By then all the Xmas craft markets will be going, and my mom and I usually get to at least one.
posted by dorey_oh at 8:48 PM on November 2, 2011

Also, I have played very few of the classic card game types, but am happy to learn them. Except for poker, maybe, they can't be much harder than the board games we've played recently, right?

As far as I can tell, this is a thing that involves drinking whiskey and playing cards at Greg's house on December 10th.
posted by mimo at 9:19 AM on November 9, 2011

Or whisky, depending on one's personal tastes.

I'm up for that, but depending on how many people choose to attend we may need to deal with logistics - i.e. available table space and chairs. My dining table can accommodate 8 people comfortably (but I only have 6 chairs), and I've got a folding card table for an additional 4 people. Might need to have someone(s) bring a few folding chairs.

The 10th? We could make the 10th.

Also, did anyone have interest in playing 1000 blank white cards? We had fun with that a few meetups ago...

Questions regarding food-type things. Eat ahead of time? Snacks there? What goes well with whiskey tasting? I can bake something to bring. Chocolatey? Fruity? Othery?
posted by dorey_oh at 11:07 AM on November 14, 2011

Thanks. As for food, if we decide we want to go that route - as opposed to eating ahead of time or simple snacks - here's what I wrote for the previous event:

You can Google "scotch food pairing" for more ideas, but here's a short list of SUGGESTIONS. Don't feel like you have to limit yourself to these! That said: Coffee (as I mentioned I have a regular coffee machine and an espresso machine), dark chocolate, and shortbread/non-flavored crackers tend to be mentioned most often as palate-cleansers between rounds; next come both strongly-flavored desserts and savory/smoked meats; followed by seafood (including raw sushi); various sharp or hard cheeses, olives, and tapenades on crackers or dense dark breads; baked/roasted veggies, mushrooms, or pumpkin seeds; and smoked almonds or mixed nuts. In other words, foods that will stand up to the strong smokey/peaty flavors of various scotches. Easy on the garlic, though, from what I hear - one source said it tends to clash with the scotch flavors. *shrug* Whatever.... Beyond that, fulfill your personal potluck whims, and it'll be fine

(No mention yet of Scotch Eggs this time around...)

Didn't think to check the other thread for food plans/ideas. Looks like a good chance to break out the shortbread recipes, unless something else strikes my fancy in the mean time...

...Or would a ghetto pan be, like, scavenged scrap metal or an old hubcap?

I do like chocolate, though, so maybe I should just shut up.

Ardbeg and Lagavulin are, of course, the nails holding that particular tapestry up.
posted by cortex at 1:58 PM on November 17, 2011

At the last tasting, Ardbeg tasted to me like whisky that someone had dumped an over-generous amount of Liquid Smoke into - it tasted artificial and overdone. Since then, I've tried and LOVED both Laphroaig 10 and Lagavulin 16, to the point that now Lagavulin is my all-time favorite, beating out Laphroaig by a whisky whisker, and Macallan 12 in third place. So maybe it's time to take another stab at Ardbeg...

I don't think I've ever played it but I'm willing to learn. As a kid I mostly thought of pinochle decks as AWESOME POKER HAND EVERY TIME.

Also, my mother-in-law just gave me and the wife a quick walking tour of Euchre yesterday, if anyone is conversant and wants to try and get a game of that together. Or Hearts or other such stuff.

For what it's worth, you would not be ostracized for showing up with any whiskey that cost more than maybe 15 dollars either, and if you want to use this as an excuse to pick yourself up a nice affordable bottle of bourbon or rye that you go home with most of I think we can make some recommendations.

Also also: two decks of playing cards.

Also also also: a pack o' poker chips for poker-ing and/or counting of various sorts.

Additionally: I think I left my book o' rules at Greg's house from last time, so I am bringing that, in the future, from the past.
posted by curious nu at 4:34 PM on December 9, 2011

Nice trick, curious nu. Interestingly, your book didn't seem to be here or not here until I went to look. Spooky....

I determined that I do have one complete set of cards, so nobody can say I'm not playing with a full deck! (Also, all the knives in my drawer are quite uniformly sharp. But I digress.) Anyway, yes, it's probably a good idea to have folks bring a few additional decks for the various gamings.

Finally, dorey_oh and specklet have agreed to bring chairs; but if at all possible, from the looks of the attendance+maybe list it would help if someone else could bring, say, another 4 chairs just to be on the safe side.

(I remember, when I was a kid, my grandparents had this great set of nice wooden folding chairs with a nifty storage rack to keep them in, for bridge nights at their house. Can't find something like that nowadays for love nor money)
posted by Greg_Ace at 6:41 PM on December 9, 2011

I realized that one problem was probably that we kept drawing from the main deck, instead of drawing blank cards instead.

I thought the purpose was to mix blank cards into the main deck, and draw on them when drawn from the deck.

We may need to have a card-making session fueled by more booze and tasty things.
posted by nickthetourist at 4:43 PM on December 11, 2011

Ah, the main deck has blank cards mixed in, but if there are many games played in succession, one must add in new blank cards.

But yes, card-making session fueled by more booze and tasty things!
posted by Specklet at 5:47 PM on December 11, 2011

Yes, split the deck. There must be some obvious MetaFilter ones to separate out to form the core of a new deck. Those participating in the next game could also bring a handful of new cards to contribute if they'd like (such as nick's great idea), and the rest will grow from there.
posted by mimo at 6:41 PM on December 11, 2011

I sense a "booze and tasty things" meetup in the making...

At one point toward the end of the first whisky-tasting earlier this year, one suggestion was a cocktail-themed tasting where we could each bring the appropriate ingredients for our favorite mixed drink. I could easily see that working well with a 1KBWC gathering.
