So Lutoslawski's leaving town to go do something kind of awesome. He's leaving some time around 6 October or so. I think we should have a beer or four or more to send him on his way. Me, I'm out of town from tomorrow through 29 September, so I'm proposing we get together somewhere (Green Dragon? East Burn?) on the weekend of 30 Sept / 1 Oct / 2 Oct. Are you fuckers in or out?

So yeah. I'm pulling a sort of silly Thoreau thing and I'm going to go spend at least the winter in a little lake cabin in Minnesota doing some writing and recording and that other solitary nonsense one gets the itch to do from time to time. So I'm packing my stuff into my Camry and I'm headed out of Portland on October 7th.

I would really like to see any of you awesome fuckers that might wanna get some beers before I go.

I think I just know a bunch of people who don't think marriage qua marriage is a big deal, but have decided that the health insurance and / or mortgage loan benefits of it are too useful to pass up.

Your friends didn't just start working at portland state did they? I met some folks doing the same thing, just so they didn't have the pay the taxes on domestic partnership benefits (vs married).

On benefits provided to domestic partners, specifically. So PSU pays for $1200 in healthcare for your partner, you have to pay taxes on that. But not if that person is your spouse. I'm guessing the "can't tax benefits extended to spouses/family" is a longer standing ordinance, and when they created the legal concept of domestic partner, they omitted that part. But I'm just guessing at this point. No idea of it is a federal or state thing either.

Seriously though, even if you didn't come just to say farewell, it was fantastic to see so many of you. You guys - all of you - are some pretty fucking good people.

I'm not one for heaps of sentiment, but you Portland mefites have meant much to me. You are really a great group of folks.

I won't be so active in the coming months, but I'll be around. And really, if any of you want a free lake getaway, you're absolutely welcome at the cabin.
