woohoo! I just moved out here for school, leaving my old pub quiz team behind, so I am in. I've never made it to a meet-up before. How do you spot a MeFite in the wild?
posted by smirkette at 4:35 AM on August 26, 2011

Welcome, smirkette! When you get there, just look for a man who's handsome, relaxed, confident (but without being arrogant), charming, and popular.

Then walk past him to the back of the room. I'll be the one wearing a MetaFilter t-shirt.

Horace, you are far too modest!

Hopefully the hurricane business will be over and done with by Monday night... It'll be fun to see you all, and damn, get another one of those exceedingly delicious beers I had last time. Also, the calamari appetizer was amazing, in case y'all were wondering.

The club sandwich was also respectable. If it helps, smirkette, here are some MeFites in action on location. For handy stalking* purposes.

* note: stalking != stocking. That's even creepier.

Oh, and also, I'll be there. If the hurricane doesn't cut my power this weekend, I may have cookies.
posted by maryr at 8:26 AM on August 26, 2011

I should be there, assuming Tommy Doyle's has not blown away in the storm.
posted by backseatpilot at 10:17 AM on August 26, 2011

What storm?

I'll be there, to unleash a hurricane of wild guesses!

My college alumni association is also sending a team to this trivia night. My loyalty is to the tater teams, though!

There will be cookies.

How late does this Thing usually go, again? 10? 11?
posted by Aizkolari at 4:58 AM on August 29, 2011

10:30ish is my recollection.

Also, there's an event going on upstairs at Tommy Doyle's tonight, so I suspect we'll be in the basement (I hope so, anyway, it's where the keep the really good beer). Check the chalkboard or ask staff when you get there.
posted by Horace Rumpole at 6:09 AM on August 29, 2011

And with more than 6 Mefites there I assume you (we) usually split up into a couple of different teams?
posted by Aizkolari at 7:02 AM on August 29, 2011

Yes, that's right. I think once we had three teams and finished 2-3-4.

BTW, tonight's topics...
Tonight we're exploring a variety of topics. We've got cuteness, being 30, mythology and geography. So, if you happen to be a cute 30 year old named after an ancient deity who can pinpoint the deity's origin on a map, you're all set for tonight. Everyone else? Get to studying.

Tonight's Themes Include:

Bedlams and Bad Lambs
Dirty 30s
The History of Cuteness
Moon Mythology
Movie Geography

Ooh, moon mythology. I'm pro-deity and I vote.

Mary's bringing cookies...I might bring some moon-related artwork and use this whole thing as an excuse to flog my etsy shop (http://eastwardarts.etsy.com). Pardon my shameless self-promotion.

See y'all tonight!

Ooh, moon mythology.

Don't get your hopes up, it's probably just about naked butts.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Moon Mythology

This will be the picture round - identify the celebrity by this photo of their ass.

One of my neighbors just tweeted that my street is still without power, so rather than spend another night sitting alone in the dark I may just drive into town and join ya'll. Pub food will be better than a ten year old MRE.

Well, it's no oreo-inside-a-chocolate-chip, but I can say that my cookies will be better than a ten year old MRE.

I am very pleased to report that Taters 5: Potato Skins on Patrol emerged victorious, with a strong 4th place showing by A Shit Name for a Monkey (strongly worded protest over Jerusalem as a capital to follow). I was relieved we didn't have to participate in the 2nd place tiebreak danceoff.

Thanks all. I had a great time at my first ever pub trivia. Our team came in first AND I found on street parking right in Harvard Sq.

Sadly, my luck did not last as I am still without power here at home. Currently heating water on my gas grill for my morning "shower."

Does anyone remember what the third 'J' capital was, besides Jerusalem and Jakarta? It was something I don't think I had ever heard of.
posted by Kosh at 8:43 PM on August 29, 2011

Hey all! Sure was fun to see familiar faces and meet some new folks too (and I notice a rare online appearance from my teammate Kosh here--keep up the good work, fella.)

Congrats to the Tater crew and excellent midplace showing for Shit Name, babies. Told you we'd finish better than sixth!

Finally, Mary, thanks much for the cookies. They were delicious, and fostered very good will with the GwD staff and that poor overworked waitress too. Good cookies mean good karma.

Also--was the History of Cuteness thing the visual round? Must have been?
posted by Sublimity at 4:26 AM on August 30, 2011

Wikipedia's list of world capitals explains the deal with Jerusalem (just what we need, I/P in our trivia meetup) and gives Juba, capital of the new South Sudan as the other J.

Sublimity, I think so, yes.

Sorry I missed it, just had too much to get done last night and I couldn't tear myself away.

I have seven years of dormancy to overcome, Sublimity, so I'm taking it one step at a time. :) (or, as we say in Spanish, paso a paso!) in another seven years I might be ready to make an FPP...

Had a lot of fun last night even though I was pretty out of it due a pressure cooker of a Monday. Looking forward to the next time, and to not letting so much time elapse between my attendances.

Wow, we set a scoring record? I am amazed and happy! High fives all around!
