Mon August 15 at 8:00 PM, Tommy Doyle's
96 Winthrop St, Cambridge, MA, USA (Map & Directions)
It's the "on" week of our every other week get together at Tommy Doyle's for the Geeks Who Drink pub quiz.
After a close competition last week, we must reclaim our title! Will you be there?
8 PM, Tommy Doyle's in Harvard Square.
(Usually Horace posts these, but I didn't see one this week. Maybe I am off a week? Or internet-blind? Either way, I would still like to trivia and am hoping other folks are of a similar mind.)

Thanks, Mary--I had a lot of fun last time. I'll see if I can make it!

I'm going to try to make it, since it's probably the last one I can make for awhile. School starts again soon and class is on Monday nights. Unfortunately, I'm traveling this week and have company over the weekend, so I might just need a quiet night Monday.

May our empire strike back! (Unfortunately, I'm bogged down with work and packing and can't be part of what will probably be the most critically acclaimed episode of the series.)

I have a work obligation tonight as well.

Hey, all, I'm getting ready to strap on my raincoat and start making my way to Cambridge. Hoping to see Ldthomps and overeducated_alligator again, and meet you MaryR! I'll wear my Mefi tshirt to make me easier to spot.

Though the enormous high-visibility pink raincoat might be more eye-catching than the charcoal-gray MetaFilter T shirt.

I'll be there (HOPEFULLY) a bit after 7:30 - I'm coming from Medford via MBTA, so it's a bit hard to promise.

How'd it go? (Jess & I are at the easternmost point in the continental US.)

Wow, I totally misread that as being NEXT week. As I am not in the area THIS week, I didn't make it.

Maryr and ldthomps and friend and I put in a solid showing in the middle of the pack as the Dicktaters. Marry is a free-beer-winning machine, ftr. Good times!
Too many questions about lame tv/media, not enough questions about biochemistry, but we gave the host What For and he should mend his ways in future.
In any event, one fine night with the Mefi crew and I'm looking forwArd to next time. Ld's friend at one point remarked that "Ampersand" is a "shit name for a monkey"--I nominate that last Phrase as our next team name.

Yes, the host promised that next time the answer to a question in round two will be "endoplasmic reticulum" which lead me to ask "Rough or smooth?" and then barely stop myself from adding "That's what she said."
We came in 5th out of 9 teams, reaching as high as 3rd (after using our joker) and falling as low as 7th (after a couple of brutal early rounds). As noted, the "geek" component was largely absent from this week's quiz. We managed two free beer tokens on geeky bonus questions though (Who currently manufactures GIJoe toys? Who wrote The Sandman comics?). And although we totally bombed on early rounds (name that sequel, complete with subtitle was particularly rough, although points to ldthomps for correctly naming Breakin' 2: Electric Bugaloo), we did surprisingly well on the later rounds (Bad TV Theme Songs went quite well).
A good time was had by all. See you in a couple weeks, I hope!
PS: Specific MeFi shoutout in the wrapup!
