Fri April 22 at 6:30 PM, the Lucky Lab on Hawthorne
915 SE Hawthorne Blvd, Portland, OR, USA (Map & Directions)
After years of threats and/or promises, I'll be in Portland from the 18th to the 23rd of April, and I'd like to meet you fine folks over some local brews!
We'll be at the Lucky Lab, at 915 SE Hawthorne, for 6:30 (or sevenish, if this is like Vancouver meetups) so we can get in early enough for a table! Also, the boyfriend and I are both photo nerds, so be prepared for cameras all over the place.

I'd be up for whatever! Are you familiar with Portland? Here is a map with many breweries on it.

I'm always game for drinking beer and meeting Mefites.

Greg_Ace: I'm always game for drinking beer and meeting Mefites.

As am I.
I'm thinking the evening of Friday, the 22nd could work well, unless you're going to be around through Saturday evening, in which case it may work best.
Any thoughts?

Woo! Yeah, whatever in there would work, I'm down.

I, too, am interested in attending this meetup.
posted by maqsarian at 11:34 PM on March 18, 2011

I think the 21st or 22nd work best; the 24th has me back at work in Vancouver and the BF having oral surgery in Kelowna so the 23rd will be a travel day.
I haven't figured out where we're staying, but that's not really a concern as to where the bar should be—we're both beer nerds so anywhere with a good selection (and ideally samplers) works great, which I will leave up to the locals.

OMG! I may be there at the same time!
posted by Stewriffic at 9:21 AM on March 19, 2011

The 22nd would be best for me, as I have evening classes M-Th.
Not that that really matters for the rest of y'all.
posted by nickthetourist at 9:56 AM on March 19, 2011

We'll be roadtripping down from Seattle and I suspect the 22nd will be best for us of the dates mentioned. That said, we do have some flexibility. I'm just excited I don't have to do the planning!
posted by Stewriffic at 5:29 PM on March 19, 2011

Friday meetups can run into space problems, as Friday night is when the entire town decides to hit the bars and restaurants. It's probably like that everywhere, really, but it seems more noticeable here.

For sheer number of choices, someplace like Green Dragon, Saraveza, EastBurn or Concordia is your best bet. Brewery-owned places usually offer only their own beers, which is cool but not a wide selection.

Stew! Cool!

I'll still be a month away from 21, but this sounds like fun. I know the Lucky Labrador on Hawthorne doesn't card if you don't buy alcohol, and is a few blocks from a great batch of food carts, as heeeraldo mentioned being interested in.
posted by Corduroy at 8:42 PM on March 20, 2011

But if an all ages sort of place is too much hassle, that's totally fine.
posted by Corduroy at 8:43 PM on March 20, 2011

I talked to the BF, and the 22nd sounds great, especially if it means meeting Stewriffic!

Having spent the first two years of university underage, I feel Cord's pain, so if the Lucky Labrador makes sense as far as location/seating/noise levels go, then let's do it there.
posted by heeeraldo at 10:55 PM on March 20, 2011

Yeah, Stew and I can be there on the 22nd. That weekend was when I expected to be in Portland.

SQUEEEEEE! I love meetups.
posted by Stewriffic at 5:01 PM on March 21, 2011

My work is next to the Lab (for the next 5 weeks), the beer is not exactly phenomenal, but it is tasty, but may be crowded on a Friday night. And it is stumbling distance to Potato Champion, which will definitely be crowded (cash only carts).

Also, if you want to try other beers as well (and Cord has gone home) we can easily get to Cascade, Green Dragon, or venture on down to Apex as well.
posted by mrzarquon at 5:35 PM on March 21, 2011

Also, Cordurory, does this mean we get to do a birthday meetup for you as well?
posted by mrzarquon at 5:36 PM on March 21, 2011

Lucky Labrador it is!
And now we just have to decide which one, as there are actually 4 locations.
All but the Capitol Hwy location seem to be (based on Google maps) fairly easy to get to via Trimet.
posted by nickthetourist at 5:46 PM on March 21, 2011

I believe lucky lab on Hawthorne is the one in discussion. 915 SE Hawthorne.
posted by mrzarquon at 5:48 PM on March 21, 2011

I meant to make the point that there are 4 options.
It's possible that one of the other locations could work better.
It all depends on....whatever.
posted by nickthetourist at 8:22 PM on March 21, 2011

Great! Sorry about the age hassle, glad people don't hate lucky lab or anything. The one in the SE is the only one I've been to and the closest for me. I also suggested it because of how close it is to some great food carts, fulfilling another of heeeraldo's specifications.
posted by Corduroy at 9:18 PM on March 21, 2011

This could be very possible...

My bad, I was reading it as the southeast was the decided spot and Lab was the Minors allowed drinking spot in the area. Any Lucky Lab, Lompoc or McMenamin's have minors hours, in my experience.

So are we still up for the Lab on Hawthorne?

Works for me.

posted by Secretariat at 1:18 PM on March 22, 2011

I think I have to kick it over into "confirmed," but before I do that: what time should we set this for, and what's the actual address of the place?
posted by heeeraldo at 9:38 PM on March 22, 2011

The address is 915 SE Hawthorne Blvd, Portland, OR 97214. As far as time, I don't know, maybe 6? A bit earlier? Minors hours are until 9:00 PM.
posted by maqsarian at 11:17 PM on March 22, 2011

I don't think the minor hours thing will be an issue, especially if we're already there. Any time works for me, I think. I guess it depends on if people wanted to get food at the carts or whatever.
posted by Corduroy at 11:30 PM on March 22, 2011

I think 6-ish is good: early enough for us to get a big table, late enough to allow people to get there from work.
posted by Specklet at 1:25 PM on March 23, 2011

let's say 6:30.

It does, msalt, and that's actually one of the big draws for me, meetup + standup. I don't think I'm going to be able to make it this time, unfortunately, although there's still hope that I'll just say "fuck it" and hop in the car. It's happened before.

Had an "Only In Portland" moment this evening: both buses I took to get home - great meetup, by the way, nice to meet the new faces - had a "dank" smell to them ifyouknowwhatImean. It's a wonder the drivers didn't have a contact high...though come to think of it, the second driver did almost bypass my stop, I had to yell out "This is it!" as we blew past.

I ended up getting roped into a friends 'last day at work pub crawl' last night, so I'm sorry I missed everyone last night.

To make up for it, here is a photo of a goat (donnie the goat to be percise) who was hanging out on Mississippi last night.

list format, since we're sitting around Union Station:

- it was great to meet you all! sorry about being late to the meetup I called.
- we're on a train north today, so photos will be a couple days (especially since the upload on Amtrak is nine kinds of terrible.)
- a special shoutout to Stewriffic, who it was absolutely delightful to finally meet.
- also, courtesy of churl, Aidan's getting an account; brace yourselves.

also, Portland is a lovely city and we're both pretty set on coming back, but if you find yourselves in Vancouver (the one in Canada,) before we're back in Portland, let's grab a beer.

Huge success! That was great fun.

I vaguely and blurrily remember at the end of the night maqsarian and I split the $5 and guilt-tripped heeeraldo's boyfriend into promising to sign up here with it. But we failed to account for the exchange rate. In hindsight, I should have just taken out the iPhone and signed him up on the spot.

I couldn't believe how uninhabited the Lucky Lab was! We practically had the giant place to ourselves on a summer Friday night. I totally endorse the venue for future Fri+Sat beer-meetups. An alternate name for a beer-meetup is a "beatup" I just realized.

I stopped at a gyro place on the walk home and, while there, managed to anger a tall, lanky drunk guy with a lot of money who I now really think might have been Andy Dick.

Tis true. I've been dragged kicking and screaming to the internet once again. Oh mercy me.

It was a pleasure meeting everyone; beers, especially cheap and tasty ones, help with that process.

Indeed, cheap and tasty beers are to blame for this account; I'm sure to meander around, interjecting irreverently at my whims. Heeeraldo already warned you all already.

Oh, good, Aidan signed up. I'm glad my small contribution to the Quick-Get This-Guy-A-Membership Fund was not for naught.

Also, this meetup alerted me to the existence of Japanese-style hot dogs, which had somehow escaped my attention. So now I have a goal to work towards (acquiring said hot dogs), which is always nice.

Great to meet some new (to me) folks (and see a couple of people I hadn't seen in a while). Given how relatively empty the Lucky Lab was for a Friday evening, they'd be almost an ideal meetup location-- if only they had some damn whiskey... Now where are all the pictures those Canadian fellas were taking with their fancy cameras?
