Twin Cities meetup!

Sun August 11 at 12:00 PM, The Coffee Shop NE
2852 Johnson St NE, Minneapolis, MN, USA (Map & Directions)
It's time we had another meetup.
Twin Citians, I feel like it's been awhile. Let's have a meetup or two! I have a few proposals:

Postcards to Voters meetup
I've been doing a bunch of postcards to voters to get people signed up for the Florida Vote by Mail campaign. I thought it might be fun to do it with other people and make a social event of it. You don't have to be artistic - I have postcards with pictures on them - you just have to write in the details. I have tons of postcards and also markers. Let's turn Florida blue in 2020!

Minnesota State Fair
The Great Minnesota Get-Together is rapidly approaching! Would anyone be interested in going? I usually try to go on a weekday to avoid the weekend crowds, but am open to whatever day.

Puzzle/escape/riddle room
Would there be any interest in doing this? I've been wanting to do it for ages. I think it's maybe around $20 per person and we'd probably need at least 4 people to go. We could go for dinner or something afterward.

Any interest in any of these let me know!

I like the Postcards idea, and I have too many date conflicts in order to suggest one. I'll go with whatever the rest of the group decides.

Thanks for organizing this! I would be very likely to attend a postcard writing meetup. I'm interested in the fair but very unlikely to be able to go on a weekday. I would be less likely to attend an escape room meetup.

I'd be up for an escape room, and maybe the Postcards to Voters. I still need to sign up for shifts for the State Fair, so probably won't make the meetup.

I'd enjoy a Fair meetup, but I'm probably not taking PTO for it this year, so I'll be going on evenings and/or weekends.

Okay! So how would the weekend after next (Aug 9-11) work for a postcard meetup? Maybe Saturday or Sunday afternoon? We could meet at The NE Coffee Shop unless anyone else has a better place in mind.

Terrible for me; that's when MagicFest Minneapolis is. But like I said, feel free to plan without me.

I'm up for whatever (although seconding everyone else that evenings/weekends are better for the fair) and so far the weekend of August 9-11 is open for me.

I might be fringing next weekend, but also my schedule is filled between now and late October, so I really don't want anyone scheduling around me.

I have no plans the weekend of the 9th and would be very likely to attend a postcard meetup with my non-Mefite spouse anytime that weekend!

The afternoons of the Saturday the 10th and Sunday the 11th are both open for me.

I have never tried an escape room and have always wanted to! I'd also be cool with Postcards to Voters. I am surprisingly free the whole weekend of the 9th-11th - but Herr Duck works the whole weekend so I will be solo.

The Coffeeshop NE is right down the street from me, so that's awesome - but I am pretty mobile so if it's somewhere else I can most likely find my way there.

I'm not sure what's going to be happening during the State Fair. I probably will wind up going with the same friends I always go with. We usually go first thing in the morning, have breakfast there, and I am able to stay until about 2pm when I get overwhelmed, overstuffed, and just plain over it. :^)

I'd love to be part of a postcard meetup, but am only free on Sunday afternoon.

Okay! I've made it for Sunday the 11th at noon. I've put the Coffee Shop NE as the location, but it maaaay be a little crowded at that time. We can definitely go there (and I can show up early to try to find a spot) but if anyone has any ideas for a bigger or more spacious location, let me know. Spyhouse in NE is bigger but I also think they get even more crowded.

If people are interested, we could then do another postcards meetup two weeks out (weekend of the 24th/25th) for anyone who wants to attend but can't on the 11th? What do people think?

Regarding the state fair, last time I think we did an after work meetup, so if people are interested in doing that, I could post a separate thread for that. I think I may be off that whole week and I go to the fair multiple times anyway.

If enough people definitely want to do an escape room, I could post a separate thread for planning that. My schedule is pretty open now, with the exception of the weekend of the 16th -18th. I would propose an escape room and maybe a bite to eat on either a Friday night, Saturday afternoon/evening or a Sunday afternoon. I think we would probably need at least 4 people. The escape room itself I think takes about an hour. dinty_moore, Flannery Culp and Gray Duck all expressed interest - should we open a separate thread?

Also, I have postcards and markers, but also please bring any supplies you may have to the meetup - the more stuff the better!

For escape rooms, I'm going to selfishly suggest the one in my neighborhood, Trapped Puzzle Rooms. Easy transit access (it's on Snelling a few blocks south of Randolph) and walking distance to burgers, coffeeshops, and Nelson's Ice Cream (home of the "single scoop" that can feed a family of four) if we want to hang out before or after.

Can you let me know what kinds of additional supplies would be useful to bring? Sorry if this is a dumb question. Ms. Kwine has taken on a costuming gig and has to go to rehearsal tomorrow, but I'll be there! Please keep the thread posted if the venue changes-I'll be on a bike most likely.

Still meeting at coffee shop NE! By supplies, I mainly mean markers/pens, stickers (if you're into that) and postcards if you have them. I do have a ton of pre-printed postcards, but not many plain ones, if you prefer to do your own design. Look forward to seeing you tomorrow!

Any kind of postcard? Like, if I have some old jokey postcards or postcards from the MIA, would those be helpful?
posted by Gray Duck at 5:14 PM on August 10, 2019

Yeah, you can use pretty much anything that would be considered appropriate for this kind of thing. And just to clarify, I do have pens and markers, it's just always helpful to have more if anyone has any and wants to bring them.

Cool, I have gotten here early to do some work for the morning. I have a small four person table in the middle of the back room; I am a tall white man in glasses and a red t-shirt. I brought the bag that I used to use when I was organizing letter writing campaigns to my representatives in Seattle; it has at least pens and gold stars and postage in it, maybe some other things too
posted by Kwine at 6:56 AM on August 11, 2019

Awesome! I was going to get there early to get a table. Do you think the one you're at will be big enough? I have to run a couple of errands this morning, but I can get there anytime. I could also drop my stuff off and come back later. How's it looking there?
posted by triggerfinger at 7:05 AM on August 11, 2019

It's not super crowded right now, plenty of empty tables but all on the smaller side. the table that i'm at will be a bit too small if everyone comes. There's only really one bigger table that seats 8; it is not occupied right now but I felt bad about taking up so much space by myself for hours. Even if it gets crowded, we could probably make this table work for five, and if it doesn't get crowded we could easily push some tables together.

I'm out - sorry to miss you all. Would be open to an escape room at some point and have a shift at the state Fair on Sept 1st.

Sorry, I lost track of time. My ETA is 12:40.

Yes! It was so fun to see/meet everyone! Thank you all for coming! :) I will do a trivia meetup post tomorrow!
