PAX East after-hours meetup
posted February 7, 2011 1:01 PM   RSS | iCal | +googleCal

Sat March 12 at 8:00 PM, Murphy's Law
837 Summer St, Boston, MA, USA (Map & Directions)
We'll be meeting for drinks at Murphy's Law, of Gone Baby Gone fame. It's not the closest bar to BCEC, but it's a short easy walk, and hopefully that means it won't be too busy. This'll be Saturday night, overlapping some of the late Saturday events (JoCo and Omegathon round 3, in particular), but there's not a lot of drinking time that doesn't overlap, so there's really no choice.
You don't need to attend the conference to attend this meetup!

And we are also meeting at PAX on Saturday morning to play games.

I will definitely be there. Probably all three days. *Might* have a spare pass for someone to borrow on one or two of those days.

I am likely to be attending.

I wasn't planning to attend--though Ryvar, if you have an extra pass, I'd love to check it all out!--but, as always, I wanted to rally behind any meetup in a bar. Defend Southie!

I'd also note that I am as authentic in my cry of "Defend Southie" as a seven-year-old Flemish girl.

"Defend Southie" is a Celtic punk band fronted by Aafje De Caluwaert (7).

I'll show up to a meetup, haven't decided on PAX yet though. Are there still tickets available?

What about organizing a Harpoon Brewery tour/tasting Friday?
posted by backseatpilot at 5:49 AM on February 8, 2011

PAX tickets are still available. They expect to run out of three day passes in the next couple of weeks. No word on how many one-day passes are still around, but they completely sold out last year and I think they expect to do the same this year.

Harpoon only does tours on the weekends. But we could hit up one of the tastings at 2pm or 4pm on Friday. I'm not sure if we can expect it to be totally packed or not. It's a long enough walk from the conference center and in the middle of the day, so maybe it wouldn't get filled by attendees.

Well, Aafje (the "Old Colony's Kleine Duivel") is an outlier, to be fair. There was a time you couldn't walk down Dot Ave after dark without checking over your shoulder for her or her droogs, and you always knew they were packing heavy. Fortunately, the redolent smell of beef tallow, frites, and mussels was enough to put your guard up, at least if you were downwind of them. Say what you want about Menino, but his visionary outreach program for troubled Flemish kids deserves a lot of credit for turning Aafje away from her nascent life of crime and towards music.

Mmmm... frites and mussels.

Admiral: I bought a 3-day pass a while back. I know our company is getting us three day passes as well. My girlfriend might want to hit a couple panels, though, so I'll let you know (or MeMail if I forget to) once the panel schedule comes out. Figure a 60% chance you get at least 2.5 days out of it.

Not interested in the con, but I work on A Street between Broadway and Summer Street so if there happened to be something around the dinner hour where people were getting together, I'd be there, be it in Southie or the Financial District.

I'll be there. With bells on (not really).

I do not. I walk right past the little Gillette tribute display pretty often, though!

I will be at PAX for work (though I was planning to attend regardless), so I may or may not be able to make this. I'll know once our schedules are finalized.

Not attending PAX, but I've been in Boston 10 years or so and still yet to go to Southie. (My Irish ancestry would be ashamed, except that my Irish ancesters are from Dorchester, so I doubt they mind.) I may attend just for the field trip aspect. =)

I'm planning to be at PAX, and I'll most happily support a meetup that can accommodate non-attendees, but it might be nice to have at least a meet and greet at the con as well. There's so much opportunity for Mefite vs Mefite gaming action at PAX, it seems a shame not to take advantage.

Not attending PAX either, but most definitely into a meetup.

I'll go to a meetup, too!

OK, got a pass. I'm there!

Not working PAX this year due to baby, but we might be able to swing by for a meetup. Again, it depends on what the lil dude abides.

So it sounds like there's some audience for two different meetups:

1) A meet and greet at PAX East itself. Might I suggest first thing Saturday by the PC freeplay? And then maybe those who are interested can play an in-person MeFightClub event? TF2 is traditional, but last year there were a dozenish games installed on the freeplay machines. Others can maybe bring board/card games and pop a squat somewhere.

2) Something else somewhere else that involves ethanol-laced liquids. Harpoon tasting is a good idea, but it's a ten-minute walk for a one-hour mid-day thing. Maybe a Saturday evening meetup at a bar would be more effective.

Two other suggestions near Broadway - Amrhein's or Franklin Southie. Amrhein's is pretty large, and they both have outdoor seating if the weather is warm enough by then (ha!).

Warning: PAX three-day passes are sold out, and there are fewer than 750 Saturday passes left, so if you want to go, you'd better act quick!

I'm all for the idea of a meetup at the PC freeplay. I'll be there along with my girlfriend (also a mefighter).

And possibly later for drinkin'.

I picked a place and a time, hope they work out for everyone. I also forked the at-PAX MeFight Club meetup to its own thread.

Both times tomorrow are a little weird for me, but I'll try to slot this one in somehow.

I'm there! Meet me!

... This place is authentic!

It was me and grobstein and Ryvar. They had a much better selection than I was expecting, and we weren't intimidated once. In my experience, that's a great Southie dive bar review.

Sorry, I meant to make it, but lost track of when PAX was and completely missed that the meetup was this weekend. I was eating delicious Thai food instead. I hope you guys had fun! I love dive bars and am sad I missed it.
