Card games at the Cambridge Library

Sun April 17 at 1:00 PM, Cambridge Public Library
449 Broadway, Cambridge, MA, USA (Map & Directions)
Does anyone in the Boston area want to meet up and play cards? I'm open to any games less complicated than Bridge and more interesting than War. I don't know any great venues for card-playing off the top of head, but I'm sure we can think of something. Even if you don't know any games yourself, you're welcome to come: For my part, I'll bring one of those big books of card games. EDIT: Let's meet at the Cambridge Public Library at 1:00 this Sunday, April 17th! If not enough people can make that time, date, or place, then all of those things are flexible.

I would be excited about a game of euchre or hearts, or cassino if there's anyone around who plays it. Or learning a new game, if there's more momentum for that. I'm not especially excited about stuff in the poker family, though.

I am into euchre. I like trick-taking/bidding games, and I know a few.

Same. If other people want to play for money, that's fine, but I'd like to play games for the games' sake. It might also be easier to find a venue: I don't know what laws, if any, determine where people can play cards for money.

I like trick-taking games as well, and would love to play Spades or Whist. As far as Cassino goes, I really like Scopa and Scopone, which operate on similar principles.

Putting myself down as a maybe because I'm not ready to commit, but I might come along if it is a day I'm free. Helpful as always!

I adore card games, got sucked into a game of Hearts at a birthday party and am dying to find another outlet. My travel schedule is wonky in the spring so I'm a maybe until a date is set.

I would consider joining for hearts or spades. I'm also partial to cribbage. And I have my grandmother's mah jongg sets if that's of interest to anyone.

I love all games and will slap this with a maybe and then probably not be able to come ;{

Glad to see there's interest!

I'd be happy to play on any weeknight other than Thursday or Friday, but I would probably prefer to play on Saturday or Sunday. I have to come in from the suburbs, and it's easier to park on Sunday afternoons. As far as venues go, firechicago mentioned in a previous thread that the Blue Shirt Café tolerates game-playing on weeknights. Thoughts?

I've never been to a MeFi IRL meetup, but I was just lamenting that all of my game playing friends had moved away, so this seems like a great opportunity to kill two birds with one stone. Any card game is fine by me, but I like the spectrum between "less complicated than Bridge and more interesting than War" and not Poker. I'm a freelancer, so my schedule's pretty flexible.

I could be persuaded, I think. I vaguely remember how to play hearts, and I knew how to play canasta at some point but have completely forgotten the rules.

I do not know or play enough 'standard' card games. I am interested in this thing especially if someone will help me re-learn euchre, it has been ages. I just learned cribbage. enjoy a variety of other board and card games, can bring Fluxx and Chrononauts and Gloom.

It looks like it will be a nice day on Sunday. How about we meet at the Au Bon Pain by Harvard Square this Sunday afternoon?

Didn't that just close forever last week?

lmao I didn't know this. That's a shame. Anyone have any ideas for venues, then?

On a weekend afternoon, we could try the Powder House, where we currently do trivia nights. The cafe at the Somerville Armory might be good, too, if they don't hold an event at the same time as we go there.

Speaking of ABP by Harvard Square, I didn't know (or forgot?) there was one. There's the near-ish one where Mass Ave and Mt. Auburn split (or join, depending on how you look at it).

Also, I may be able to come on Sunday afternoon, bringing a +1 (new to the area, new to MeFi, not new to games).

Here's a thought: How about the Cambridge Public Library? Monday through Thursday, it's open until nine at night. On Saturday it's open from nine in the morning to five in the afternoon and on Sunday it's open from one to five in the afternoon. They allow food on the ground floor and there's a cafe. If we met on Sunday, we could meet at one or two and play for a decent amount of time, and if the weather were nice, we could play on the lawn outside. What do people think?

I will be out of town Sunday but would have come otherwise. Have a great time ... I hope to make it to the next one!

Have fun, kids! I won't make it, but it's good news for you all, cause I woulda taken all of your money playing my favorite game, three-card monte!

Something came up at the last minute, and I can't make it. Next time!

Ah, that's too bad. Hope it's nothing grave. Next time!

I've just arrived. I'm the guy with a cribbage board on the open patio in front.

Thanks to everyone who came. The weather was lovely and the play was fun. Let's do this again soon!

Likewise, although possibly not around long enough for the next...?

Thanks for organizing and bringing things. It was really nice to learn a couple of new games.
