Tue February 16 at 8:00 PM, George and Dragon
206 N 36th St, Seattle, WA, USA (Map & Directions)
A challenge was made in the SAD meetup thread. Quiz nights are Tuesdays at the George and Dragon at 8 PM in Fremont.
Who is interested?

I'd be interested!

I'm not sure how much of an asset I'm going to be, but if "sperm biology" or "dating foibles of the Paris Surrealist Group" turn up as topics, I'm your woman.

I am also interested, not sure how much of my trivial knowledge will come in useful. So strange how much is built up on either side of the George and Dragon, the Fremont I used to live in has undergone many changes.

I'm interested! I said yes to the last Seattle meetup and then completely 100% forgot about it because on Friday afternoon I just wanted to get home ASAP (and Google didn't remind me for some reason). But I'd like a second try at a first meetup.

The George and Dragon fka the Midget Tavern, if I recall correctly...

Interested! (also if it doesn't come up I totally want a lecture on dating foibles of the Paris Surrealist group. Is this unlocked with beer?)

Very interested. Turns out, Seattle MeFites are a pretty good bunch.

I may drop in. Will this be a weekly thing or only a one time thing?

Quizzes are Tuesdays, I was thinking of starting on the 16th to give time for people to find out and show up. Then after that, catch as catch can.

I can attend once (Feb 16th is fine) but I am up at 4 am for work daily and thus won't be able to commit to 8 pm on weeknights with any regularity.
posted by Radiophonic Oddity at 7:01 PM on February 7, 2016

Is it cool to show up for this late? I'd be free after 8:30 on Tuesdays, and I'd love to show up - If I can't join the quiz late, then I'd love to at least hang around for a bit and meet everyone.

The great thing about this one is that if I forget what day it is again, there will be multiple opportunities to make up for that.

My recollection of the George and Dragon trivia nights is that they do not always start on time. Or ever.

Anyway, yes, I'm down.

The web site says they typically have 100-150 people, and I've never met any Mefites IRL. How are we supposed to recognize each other? Is it time for me to get a shirt?

I will be the lady who is both ridiculously fancily dressed and also looking nervously around in case she gets it wrong and accosts a table full of just plain regular trivia nerds.

(I am like the worst at dressing appropriately for the PNW)

OK, so I am confirming for NEXT Tuesday, the 16th of February at the George and Dragon in Fremont at 8pm for Trivia Night.

I'm down but out on the 16th. As I mentioned previously, The G and D quiz night (at least in the past) has been notoriously difficult and sorta UK-centric. It's designed so no one gets 100% and there are a couple teams that go every week and take it Real Serious. I think the prize is you get your bar tab paid for or something substantial.

I want to be clear, that if I am participating in this thing, I am doing it to win it. I don't want chit chat, or laughing, I don't want LOUD VOICES leaking answers to neighboring tables. I don't want people over-committing to answers they aren't sure about if other people have educated guesses. If you are only 50% sure what the longest river in Peru is, commit to that and let the table decide. AND IF I AM THERE AND YOU ARE NOT TAKING THIS THING GODDAMN SERIOUSLY I WILL BELITTLE YOU AND MAKE YOU WISH YOU WERE AT THAT OTHER TABLE WITH THE OLD MEN OR THE SORORITY SISTERS.

Or whatever, sounds like fun, I might drop by.

But seriously, we need a British ringer. If ArtW can't make it I know a guy.

The shibboleth is "Are you a friend of Matt?"

Or just look for Errant. Errant is always there.

I am going to miss the 16th, but will see what I can do in subsequent weeks. My home situation doesn't allow me much out time.
posted by ChrisR at 7:08 PM on February 8, 2016

Technically, the shibboleth is "shibboleth". Or "She sells see shells by the sea shore" if I suspect you are an Ephraimite.

Ooh, look, useless trivia... but this wad having been cannoned, I would probably be worthless to your trivia team now. Also, getting a big patch of face burned off on Friday, so probably too self-conscious to appear in public.

I found a source for UK pub quiz drills and reference sheets, and I thought I'd share it. Just in case anyone feels like doing some extra prep for this thing.

(I wasn't planning on it initially, but my poor, super-annuated brain has been feeling, how shall we say, "less than fresh" lately, so it might behoove me to memorize a few kings and assassins, since I'm nigh-certain that I'm going to blow the subjects that I have advanced degrees in, and a bunch of other stuff as well.)

It's on my calendar with like a billion notifications, so I can't use the same excuse this time.

A different week would work a whole lot better for me.

The idea is to turn this into a semi regular thing. If you can't make this one, there's more.

I'm willing to give it a shot. I can't remember, does the G&D trivia have a cover charge?
posted by Errant at 10:46 AM on February 16, 2016

Right, I meant charge to play trivia, I couldn't think of another term.

I hope so. I'm out of the country this week, but really want to do it next week. Do we start a new post for next week or just continue it here?

I just want to tell you guys good luck, we're all counting on you.

I won't be able to make this week, family stuff. But I'm definitely down for next week.
posted by corb at 4:16 PM on February 16, 2016

Turns out I'm actually free on Tuesdays, its my Mondays that are spoken for. So if I don't make this one, I will most definitely at least make one of the next.

I'd like to go and I changed my status via the official-looking radio button accordingly.

I'll have a tan hat with a Pusheen button on it.

We're in the back booth by the kitchen. MoonOrb is wearing a hat. I am not.

Success and victory! And promises, oaths and pledges to return next week to conquer anew. We four defeated all comers in trivia.

We are victorious, and have earned our entrance fee for the next two weeks. See you there.

That is really awesome. Only 4, eh? I am impressed. I will do everything in my power next week. Good on all you!

I made a meetup thread for next week. Same Dragon time, Same Dragon location.
