Let's get medieval on their asses

Fri December 11 at 6:15 PM, Medieval Times
2001 N Roselle Rd, Schaumburg, IL, USA (Map & Directions)
OMG OMG OMG Medieval Times! Let's go! Here's a Groupon! Here's the website! Here are bizarre and vulgar illustrations from illuminated medieval manuscripts!
The skinny: adult general-admission (non-VIP) ticket is the plan. YOU MUST RSVP BY NOON, DECEMBER 4. Groups are only seated together with advanced notice, so a) only RSVP "yes" if you have PURCHASED TICKETS and b) please be prepared on December 4 to redeem said tickets.

This is an irony-free event. Be prepared for complete nonsense.

I presume, NOT getting VIP seating?
posted by garlic at 10:37 AM on November 20, 2015

That is correct. I'll change the intro to be more specific.
posted by eamondaly at 10:39 AM on November 20, 2015

This is out in the suburbs, but we will do our damndest to get city dwellers without car access out there, just ask.
posted by garlic at 10:40 AM on November 20, 2015

Irony free, certainly, but I can still dress in a mildly over the top manner, correct?

Is this something I'd have to have a stechzeug to understand?

Yes that's right, I googled medieval sporting terms to make this terrible joke. Thanks folks I'll be here all week.

crush: always.

This promises to be amazing. Thanks for setting it up, Eamon!

Is it to early to talk about which knight we should cheer for?
posted by Iridic at 11:44 AM on November 20, 2015

It'll depend on the section we're in.

(This is a note reminding myself that MM, VB, & BM also expressed interest. Carry on.)

I AM SO EXCITED.

(Also, this is note reminding eamon to note that we will need at least ONE VEGETARIAN MEDIEVAL MEAL in our party when he makes the reservation)

Just to be clear-- we are purchasing tickets by the 4th, but actually doing the thing on the 11th, yes?

(also omg i have wanted to do one of these since i was a tiny person!)
posted by dogheart at 10:17 AM on November 21, 2015

I definitely want to do this but will definitely need a ride to get there!
posted by jessypie at 3:38 PM on November 21, 2015

Crush! Good point! I will add that to the intro.

Dogheart: correct! Purchase by the 4th, event on the 11th.

Jessypie: rides will surely be available.

OMG, Meetup is coming to me. I frigging live in Schaumburg. Of course, I'm coming.
posted by DirtyOldTown at 7:34 AM on November 23, 2015 [3 favorites]

this is our plan at this point to get more people to come to IRL -- start hosting them where users live. To get shakespherian to come to one we're going to schedule an event at his house.

probably we should let him know before we schedule the event.

jessypie & I were discussing this last night. Is there still any interest in renting a passenger van or the like to minimize the need for designated drivers?
posted by crush-onastick at 1:16 PM on November 23, 2015

At $150-180 for a 15-passenger vehicle plus the cost of throwing some cash at a designated driver it might be as cheap or cheaper to rideshare. Splitting an Enterprise van looks like $14 per person if we fill every seat while filling a Lyft or Lyft Plus would be about $17 from my place up in Canada.

I suppose the first question is whether we actually have a volunteer with a credit card who's willing to drive. Anyone?
posted by eamondaly at 2:34 PM on November 23, 2015

Aw, man, I would totally have done this and probably brought a couple of friends. Nuts.
posted by adamdschneider at 8:40 PM on November 23, 2015

I would definitely go in on a group van but would not be able to be the driver.

I'm confused about the step that says we are redeeming our tickets on the 4th. Do we all have to buy Groupon tickets in order to redeem together and get group seating, or is it fine if some of us buy directly through Medieval Times? There's a coupon code on the Medieval Times website (TG3WEB15) that gets basically the same deal as the Groupon but I don't want to screw up the group seating part if we all need to buy from the same source.
posted by jessypie at 4:47 PM on November 25, 2015

My experience going to Medieval Times (not with Groupons however) is that people with reservations and people buying tickets there can be seated together, you just have to let the staff know. I think the December 4th redeem date thing is so we have a real serious headcount?
posted by crush-onastick at 6:50 PM on November 25, 2015

I just got tickets for Victoria and myself. I AM SO EXCITED FOR CASTLE TIMES!
posted by Zaximus at 12:07 PM on November 26, 2015 [1 favorite]

jessypie: I'm setting the 4th as the drop-dead date so I can make arrangements with Medieval Times to have us all sit together. I don't think it matters how the tickets are purchased, so if you find a better deal have at it.
posted by eamondaly at 9:18 PM on November 26, 2015

Suburban meetup yay! I need to double check Mr Figs schedule before confirming for sure.
posted by Fig at 10:45 AM on November 27, 2015

I'm unconvinced we'll fill every seat in a van.
posted by garlic at 8:37 AM on November 30, 2015

It does sound like Lyft is the best option.
posted by crush-onastick at 10:03 AM on November 30, 2015

I bought my ticket! I also found a better coupon code for the Medieval Times website (RMN3629) in case anyone else is Groupon-shy or is otherwise unable to go in on the Groupon.

Ticket purchased! +1 vegetarian meal in the RSVP, pls.
posted by Fig at 12:25 PM on December 2, 2015

I created a spreadsheet so I can make arrangements for group seating. Please fill it out when you get a chance.

was I supposed to do some sort of redeeming on Friday?

I can't figure out what to wear.
posted by crush-onastick at 3:40 PM on December 6, 2015

We had a couple stragglers, so I'm going to get the scoop on redeeming vouchers today. I suspect we can just bring them day-of, but I'll let people know if it's otherwise.
posted by eamondaly at 9:22 AM on December 7, 2015

The Groupon says: "1. Print out Groupon voucher (or pull it up with our mobile app).
2. Reservation required at least 24hrs in advance, call (888) 935-6878 and mention your Groupon.
3. Present Groupon with valid ID at the venue box office on day of event. Groups wanting to sit together must arrive together.
4. Enjoy!"

I had assumed that eamon would mention the Groupons when he made the reservation and that would be sufficient. I am now assuming that's what he's calling to check today. I will check back later to see how wrong my assumptions are! (Since I'll be taking the small person to Medieval Times for his birthday, I don't care too much if I've screwed this up, though)

If it helps, I can pick up /drop off 4 people from the Cumberland blue line el stop.

Today I learned that the memail thing about local IRL events doesn't pick up Schaumburg events for me.

(I couldn't make this anyway - its the night of multiple company holiday parties for my household. But I still has a sad that I not only will have to miss it but that I didn't even know about it until now.)
posted by misskaz at 1:38 PM on December 8, 2015

Oh shit! I just assumed it was the whole area, since people seemed to respond right away. Sorry, Kaz!

(Still waiting for a call back from Medieval Times, FYI.)
posted by eamondaly at 2:45 PM on December 8, 2015

Okay! Sorry for the delay, everyone. Apparently the Groupon is from the national office and the Schaumburg group sales office can't process them. So!

IF YOU HAVE A GROUPON, YOU MUST REDEEM IT IMMEDIATELY BY CALLING (888) 935-6878 ASAP!

It's quick and painless. They won't reserve a section for us, but if we all arrive at the same time we'll be seated together-- I'm going to change the time of the event to doors to ensure we all plan to get there early. Once you have your ticket, please update the "Tickets" column in the spreadsheet so I know everyone's gotten the message.

Shout out to the national office for being super friendly and helpful when I redeemed my Groupon.
posted by MCMikeNamara at 9:23 AM on December 9, 2015

I gave my name for the reservation, was that right?

This may also explain why theodolite gave us a total blank stare when asked if he was going to Medieval Times this weekend.

For future reference for those Chicagoans that don't know, if you want to be sure to be updated with any possible future suburban meetups, you can change your profile definition of what "nearby" is. I changed mine to 100 miles a while ago, and so far that's only meant that I've received notices for some (but not all) Milwaukee meet-ups.
posted by MCMikeNamara at 9:41 AM on December 9, 2015 [1 favorite]

Crush: yes, you're exchanging your Groupon for a ticket. I also gave my name.
posted by eamondaly at 11:08 AM on December 9, 2015

So i guess there's only four of us who still need a ride? zaximus +1 and me +1? someone w/ my info text me his or something?
posted by crush-onastick at 12:54 PM on December 9, 2015

and I love snooping on the Milwaukee meetups since they're cool peeps. It's a win win!
posted by garlic at 1:53 PM on December 9, 2015 [2 favorites]

Thank you for the text, Eamon - I was sick and sleeping all day, so I missed all the buzz in thread.

I redeemed my ticket, but the adjusted rendezvous time means my transit plans might no longer be workable. Is there any chance I could get in with Zaximus and Crush (+2) or another strike team?
posted by Iridic at 4:36 PM on December 9, 2015

I was thinking about reserving a car-share for the evening. That would fit up to 5 people (although maybe a little crowded) if everyone on that list still needs a ride.
posted by Zaximus at 11:04 AM on December 10, 2015

Oh, I didn't see that crush+1 is already taken care of. Iridic, I MeMailed you my phone number. Let's coordinate for Friday.
