Meetup at Sunset Beer in Echo Park

Sat January 11 at 6:00 PM, Sunset Beer Company
1498 Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA, USA (Map & Directions)
Prompted by a recent askme about meeting people in Los Angeles, let's meet up!
I'm not sure I'm the best one to propose this as I'll be out of town the 17th-1st, but hopefully we'll figure something out. If we do a happy hour Monday-Thursday time there is no corkage fee before 8. And no corkage Wednesday all night, but sometimes it's a bit of a clusterfuck then.

UPDATE: Saturday January 11th at 6pm it is!

I'm back home for now but I'll be back in LA as of the 31st. So anytime in January works for me!

I'm out of town for a few days before and after Xmas, but any other time works for me. So maybe we should aim for that first week of January?

Sounds good to me! Would a weekend work?

Ooo I'm new to LA (living on the westside) and would love to meet up :) be forewarned: I am intimidated by you good people and may be accidentally uber awkward.

Awkward's just fine :)

One of my favorite things about LA Mefi meetups is that we're all awkward in our own special way. Seriously, everyone is very down to earth and real and just being ourselves.

Yay! Is there a day of the week people would prefer?

I'm down for January. I can bring cats! (But not if I bike there.)

I miss you people, by the bye, and am looking forward to seeing you again.

I miss you people that I haven't met before too, but in a more general way. And I look forward to seeing you for the first time (for the last time).
posted by carsonb at 9:29 PM on December 9, 2013

Hm, if carsonb brings his cats I guess I'd better not bring my dog. (I am definitely not bringing my dog to this one. So cats, yeah!)
posted by Sara C. at 9:35 PM on December 9, 2013

Cool, I've been wanting to introduce my cat to some local brews. She has terrible taste in beer.

Thursday or Sunday, or any day that won't be super-crowded, sounds great!

I'm another Westsider, so I vote for a Sunday.

I could do this on a Sunday. Also, "Corkage fee?" In Echo Park?
posted by drjimmy11 at 9:57 PM on December 9, 2013 [1 favorite]

I lean toward Sunday mainly because work will be busy after New Years for several weeks, so on weeknights I expect I'll be more inclined just to go home and collapse.

I dunno, drjimmy11, me and you did once hang out poolside at The Standard in West Hollywood.

No word on whether you valet parked your Maserati.

Re corkage fee, apparently the place in question is a beer store that also has bar-style seating. So you buy a bottle of beer for like $2 or whatever the going rate for a single bottle of beer is, and then you pay a "corkage fee" of $2, so now you're drinking a typical bar-priced beer to enjoy the ambiance of their bar. As opposed to the $2/per you'd pay if you just bought a sixer to go.

That said I apparently drive past this place twice a day and have never noticed it or been inside. My only knowledge is based on yelp reviews. Maybe they are truly snooty? Based on the strip mall I'm pretty sure they're located in, I'm guessing it's probably at least somewhat down to earth, corkage fee be damned.

(At first I thought people were talking about a microbrewery that had a BYO wine policy, which makes no sense.)
posted by Sara C. at 10:11 PM on December 9, 2013

They also have either 8 or 12 taps, I forget. And you can bring your own food in should you require nourishment.
posted by mandymanwasregistered at 10:24 PM on December 9, 2013 [1 favorite]

I just did google Street View and seriously have no idea where this place is. I drive past there every day, too. Is it behind the Super A grocery or something? Is it flying under the banner of the Patra burger place?
posted by Sara C. at 10:27 PM on December 9, 2013

It's in the strip mall across sunset from the asian grocery store and next to the other strip mall at the corner of laveta and sunset. The sign looks like this.
posted by mandymanwasregistered at 10:42 PM on December 9, 2013

Aha. Apparently it wasn't open yet last time the google cars drove by.

We have no idea when we're moving - this all depends on the spouse finding a job and us actually finding a place to live - but if it's a weekend we will definitely come up if we're not there yet. A weeknight is iffy, I don't often have to be there for work just yet, but I'd try.

Our target for a rent house is east side, at least assuming he doesn't get a job extremely westside, so I welcome the opportunity to explore your fine neighborhoods and their beer establishments as well as meet most of you since it's been like 3 years since my last LA meetup.

I'm on the west side, and out of town 16th-23rd. Therefore, a Weekend in January would be optimal for me. I had fun at the last meetup, love to do it again.

I've been lurking the Ask that prompted this, as I feel like I'm still in the same boat as you, DeltaForce (2 years in!) and would love a chance to meet everyone. The 11th works for me (although I will need to scoot over to the Largo by 10:00 that night.)

Also... what's the/is there etiquette re: bringing non-MeFite partners to meetups?

The more the merrier, I've always felt. My partner occasionally comes along, as he likes to catch up with my "ChattyWeb" friends (as he calls them) from time to time.

I'll try to see you guys then; I can be all crispy from work and driving down.

How many people would be interested in a goofy/cool sort of perfume shop that's only open on the full moon? I'd been thinking of suggesting a get together on one of the weekend full moons, but I've no idea how many people would be interested.

I go to Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab a few times a year, but it's an in/out experience for me, mostly, as I know which scents I like and need more of.

And I can confirm that we are all very much cool in a way that is welcoming to newcomers, but not at all cool in a James Franco too-cool-for-school way.
