Mon July 15 at 7:30 PM, Tommy Doyle's Harvard Square

Geeks Who Drink is starting an 8-week tournament at Tommy Doyle's on July 15!
We discussed this a little bit on Monday night. Here are the tournament rules as currently posted on the Geeks Who Drink Facebook page:
Geeks! We'll be kicking off Geek Elite: 8 Week Quiz Tournament at Tommy Doyle's on Monday, July 15, 8 p.m. $500 in cash prizes are up for grabs! Get a team together and come every Monday to increase your chances of winning.

Here's how it works. The team with the highest cumulative score at the Monday night Geeks Who Drink Pub Quizzes over the eight weeks will win a $300 cash prize, the second highest team will get $150 and the third highest team will take home $50. Bonus points will be awarded for attendance and best team names.

It's free to play, all you have to do is show up. And the more times you come, the better chance you have at winning one of the cash prizes.

There will be a few rules for this tournament. In addition to the standard rules of no more than six to a team, no shouting out answers, and no cheating, we're also requiring you to keep the same team over the duration of the tournament.

If you have any questions, let your Quizmaster know. Good luck, live long and may the force be with you!

"When one Geek drinks, all Geeks drink!"
The big issue is the team roster - Horace talked to the quizmaster on Monday, and they are concerned about bringing in "ringers" for specific weeks (which is silly, of course, since we Taters are all excellent at every subject!). Right now on Facebook there is a discussion of submitting rosters, like maybe 8 possible people who would be on a given team. That way, if a few people can't make a specific week we can still have a team using our approved subs. Or something. I have asked for clarification on Facebook.

So is anybody interested? Do you think we have enough to submit rosters for 2 teams? Think about how much beer $300 will buy. Oh, and solidifying Tater trivia domination over Harvard Square.

So like, seconds after I posted this, they updated the rules on the Facebook page:
I'm stealing from a similar tournament GWD is doing on its west and central markets: The usual teams of six, except a team will have two team captains. Members may rotate for any reason but at least one of the two captains must be present.

So on your team's first night during the 8-week tournament, I'll need two names and they will be on the same team for the duration of the tournament. The other four (or five) can rotate. So for those of you who show up in large groups, two of you will represent an A team, and two of you will represent a B team. Does that make sense?

I'm still out of town this coming Monday, but count me in for future Mondays! I can be your ringer for.... Grotesque airplane crashes? NTSB, call me, let's do lunch.

You have my axe brain!!!

I am so very much interested in this, though I'm not sure I could make every single week. I could be the token non-knowledgeable guy! I am usually good for one pop song though.

This sounds fun! There's a couple of Mondays when I could potentially get stuck at work, but miraculously most are free.

I'd do this. I dunno what we're going to do with an axe brain, though.

I pretty consistently attend these things, but I don't think I could go every week.

I'll be a second-stringer, sure!

I can make most Mondays, and can be the designated ringer for questions about wine, apparently.

So I hope to attend on a fairly regular basis, but I can't make it next week. Godspeed Taterites!

Ok so Horace and I can commit to being there every week and being team captains, because we are HARDCORE TATERS, so that leaves four spots every week for people to rotate through.

If there are more than 4 others in a given week, but not another set of team captains, then I'm not sure what to do. I assume he'll still let you play, but it might not count for the tournament? I have to imagine there will be random teams dropping in from time to time.

What if enough of us drop in to form a second team and that second team wins? Does that mess with the first team's chances?

I guess we should get a count of potential ro-taters.

I am in now that I don't pass out on floors at 7 pm!

And I should be able to make most weeks, save maybe Labor Day.

$300 would buy, at $6/pint (say they're good beers), fifty beers. Per team of six, that would be, like, eight-and-a-third beers per person! With that amount of beer, I'd be lucky to be able to tie my shoes, never mind naming eight of the ten highest-grossing movies of all time. I'd name my shoes. Ralph.

Don't ralph on your shoes.

I see what you did there.

So I guess at this point it makes sense to RSVP if you know, for sure that you can attend on the 15th, and if we have more than 4 people, we can discuss how to divide the teams? I guess people who think they can probably make several/most of the 8 weeks should be on the tournament team, and the other team (if we have one) can use a non-repeating team name.

I promise to come to all of them except the one this coming Monday. Unless I can webex in or something.

It looks like the tournament is based on highest cumulative score across all 8 weeks, so having one week where the primary team doesn't win has no impact overall.

Personally, I wouldn't be able to commit to more than two of the 8 weeks, most likely.

I will be there tonight, assuming it's OK if I don't make a ton more of these later on in the summer.
posted by Aizkolari at 6:10 AM on July 15, 2013

Great! No, coming tonight implies absolutely no obligation for future installments. DiscourseMarker and I are the only ones who have to be there each time. Clearly, if we're going to try to field a team every week during the tournament run, we'll need lots of folks who only come now and then.

Speaking of tonight, here are a few of the themes:
-The Y's Have It
-Tinkle Tinkle Little Song
-What Obesity Epidemic?
-Recently In Stuff
-What the F*ck Is Grandma Talking About? Broadway Edition

So bone up on Broadway, I guess? And...songs? About stars?

I remembered about this today and was thinking of coming, but looking at the thread I'd be unlucky number seven? Don't want to drag down my fellow tates by forcing a split.

Can't make it tonight - too much to do. I'm still up to rotate in on future weeks, though!
