Never been there! Sounds like a good idea!

We had a previous meetup at Hopworks, but that was a while ago.
I figure it's time to go back since the food is good and the beer is better.
We just need to avoid the vault room this time around.

I nominate this meetup as Beach Discussion Meetup also.

I am interested in this! I'm out of town June 14-17, but if this gets scheduled when I'm around I'll be happy to come.

Is it the pre-trip discussion or the trip itself that you'd like between 7/15-7/23?
posted by homodachi at 12:22 PM on June 5, 2013

Yes. Break week beers! Maybe we can get the vault room again...or maybe there will be another secret MeFi meet-up there at the same time.
posted by Lutoslawski at 3:57 PM on June 5, 2013

Y'all go ahead and sit in that overheated claustrophobic vault room if you want; I'll just be sitting on a stool outside and poking my head in to make occasional comments, thanks.
posted by Greg_Ace at 4:35 PM on June 5, 2013

They have an outside, don't they? We could totally sit there!

This will be a pre-beach trip discussion in the form of a meetup to discuss details of impending beach trip....because beer makes planning easier.

Wish I could go, but I'll be traveling.

I can't make this -- I will be camping -- but I love the beach!
posted by grootless at 10:24 AM on June 7, 2013

Proposed workaround: Anyone who's interested in the as-yet-indefinite beach trip, but can't make this pub meetup/discussion, could put their two cents into this thread to be incorporated into said discussion. That way nobody misses the outing because their voice didn't get heard in the planning stage.

So speak up, compartment and grootless and any others - are there best dates for you in July/August? Any times that you wouldn't be able to go?

So, we were just informed of a mandatory family event scheduled for the 22nd in the southern half of the state.

Anyone mind if I change this to the 23rd?

Okay by me.

A wily move. You are a worthy opponent. However, your attempts to thwart me by changing the date of this gathering are worthless. My preparations proceed and your fate is sealed. Also, the 23rd is fine.

For those who are considering the beach meetup- how seriously do you want to plan today? I've been sort of thinking of it as two phases (warning, I overthink things, so I might be making this more complicated than it is)-

Phase One is chatting about what kind of things people like to do at the beach, what beaches people like, how many people would possibly want to stay the night versus how many would want to meet up for the day, and what dates would work best.

Phase Two is searching for rental houses, determining how much money people who would want to spend the night are willing to spend, collecting names of for-sure attendees, and nominating a money-handler and reservation maker. This also requires picking a firm date.

(Of course there's also Phase Zero for people who don't want to talk about the beach at all, and my favorite, Phase Three which is talking about beach food!)

Phase Two is the sort of thing that could be handled by an individual, if there's someone experienced with renting beach houses and/or enjoys coordinating, or something we can all do together. If we wanted to do some of that today, I could make sure to bring a laptop to enable that sort of thing.

Personally, it feels like a lazy sunday, so I'm more interested in casually activating Phase One today, but if there's someone feeling really enthusiastic who wants to blast us into Phase Two, go for it!

HUB does not take take reservations on the weekend, so whomever arrived first should request a big table.

We called yesterday....they have been warned.
posted by nickthetourist at 12:18 PM on June 23, 2013

Also- we invited a friend of a friend who just moved to town who is a non-mefite (but a friend of mefites) who may show up to this meetup- so if you see anyone wandering around looking lost, that could be him. I don't know what he looks like. I'll make sure to wear a metafilter tshirt today.
posted by Secretariat at 12:20 PM on June 23, 2013

I was assuming Phase One today.
posted by curious nu at 12:25 PM on June 23, 2013

I'd think that Phase Two - finding an acceptable (and affordable) beach house, at this late date - is the more urgent task, and the sooner we jump on it the better. Knowing we actually have a place to go to would be nice while we proceed with the activity and food planning.
posted by Greg_Ace at 12:45 PM on June 23, 2013

I think whether it's a late date or not depends on what city we're looking in. I was considering something not in one of the main tourist cities (what are those? Seaside and Cannon Beach, I guess?). For example, has anyone been to Oceanside before? I've stayed in a beach house there a couple of times (not one we could rent, unfortunately) and enjoyed it. No gift shops to speak of, but there is a coffee shop, as I recall. Here's a quick search for some random dates in late July- seems like a few places are available.

Some quick math- two nights, $200 a night, 6 people- that would be $67 per person, which I think is pretty reasonable. Super reasonable, compared to staying in a hotel. Just a ballpark, we may find cheaper places, or have more people, or not stay two nights (although some places will require a minimum stay). Some places also have a cleaning fee, I think.

No gift shops?!? If I can't buy some of this stuff*, I ain't interested!!

Summary of beach stuff as I left it (if there's update/more decisions, let me know):

I will research some houses that could hold at least 6-8 people in a couple of different cities on the coast (targets right now are Yachats and Rockport; other suggestions welcome!) and post what I find. Then: decision! Looking at a date mid/late August, since a few of us are taking summer classes and by that point we should be clear.
posted by curious nu at 6:57 PM on June 23, 2013

I think it was Rockaway, not Rockport. I am also a fan of Oceanside- a more northern location would work if we're trying to work with daytrippers. Or Long Beach in Washington. But I'm honestly fine with whatever- Yachats is particularly interesting to me because it starts with a Y and I don't know what's there at all! Except for Thor's Well.
posted by Secretariat at 7:52 PM on June 23, 2013

I've explored much of the northern half of the Oregon coast, from Ft. Stevens down to Yachats (and Thor's Well), and really you can't go wrong with just about any of it. As discussed today, I'm in favor of anywhere that we can see both spectacular rocky coast and nice long sandy beaches, AND get fresh seafood without driving for ages (or spending an arm and a leg in trendy upscale places). Also, with a bit of planning and a half-decent kitchen available I'd be happy to oversee the food logistics. Oh, we could eat like kings and queens!

I'm pretty sure this is the place you want.
posted by dersins at 11:25 PM on June 23, 2013

That place looks amazing and it holds 12 people at $275 a night...which strikes me as incredibly reasonable. Two night minimum though...
posted by Lutoslawski at 4:00 PM on June 24, 2013

But like...look at that location holy balls.
posted by Lutoslawski at 4:02 PM on June 24, 2013

That's what I'm thinking. 550/12 works out to about $46 per person, which seems pretty good! Says 4 bedrooms, so it might get cozy or possibly there would be couches or something, I'm not really sure. But! If there are at least 8 people who are interested I think we should grab it for then.
