...we haven't been to Green Dragon in awhile! Let's do that again. We can play that old favorite, "Which of these beers that we finally decided on aren't actually available, despite the fact that this list was printed half an hour ago?"

We can play that old favorite, "Which of these beers that we finally decided on aren't actually available, despite the fact that this list was printed half an hour ago?"

That's my favorite beer-related [reverse] Russian Roulette-like game!
Count me in!

A meetup close enough to walk to? I guess I'll finally go. Gosh.

I would be into that!

BTW, has Green Dragon always been owned by Rogue? I thought they were independent.

Owned by Rogue? Does that mean they now only serve that over-hopped swill Rogue promulgates instead of over-hopped beers from a variety of brewers?
posted by mimo at 10:47 AM on December 5, 2012

They've been owner by Rogue since....forever?
posted by nickthetourist at 11:57 AM on December 5, 2012

OK, then.

Actually, I've found at least some of the Rogue beers (Dead Guy Ale, for instance) to have a lot of full-bodied maltiness, especially in comparison to other non-overhopped but less robust brands...but YMMV of course.

Dead Guy Ale is one of my favorites.

Well, if it has the nick stamp of approval, it must be OK with me.

They weren't owned by Rogue for the first couple of meetups we had there (like that one with all the broken glass from the perilously tall beer glasses?), but they've been owned by Rogue for at least a couple of years now. The changes I've noticed with Rogue ownership:

*Better website (on the old one I had to click around randomly to find something that reacted so I could read a menu or find the hours)

*Larger and better food menu

*Ability to buy rogue beers by the bottle

So, while I initially worried they were going to switch over to all Rogue beers or something, they totally haven't. They still have the same crazy wide variety of beers. Last time I was there I had an arnold palmer flavored beer!

And, Rogue beers aren't bad, but the variety that Green Dragon historically (and currently) has had is usually more varied than what you'll find in just Rogue's standard lineup.

Hm, actually, I can't remember well enough to say for sure that the menu is better... but it's certainly more balanced, as in now I feel like they have a little bit of something for everyone. I feel like maybe the old menu had some sort of healthy veggie bowls for a while that were kind of neat.

If I'm wrong, I'm wrong. It's just that the last time I went to an official Rogue-only venue I tried three different beers and disliked them all. There were no descriptions on the beer menu that sounded non-hoppy. I'll have to give Dead Guy a try and I'm glad that GD will remain eclectic.

Yeah, when I go to an official Rogue place I usually end up driving the server crazy by asking for descriptions of every single beer to try to find one that sounds like it will be to my tastes. Or I wait until everyone else has their beers so I can taste them before I order.

By the way, Green Dragon happily did tasters last time I was there- but it was the middle of the day and they were really slow. And in fact they accidentally gave me a taster of some mead that I didn't ask about, which was a bonus.

Might take a tad more pre-planning. Maybe shoot for this Autumn.

Yes, but their Autumn is our Spring (Summer begins this week), so it's not that far away.

I've never been to a meetup, but this one is on my birthday, and I might be in Portland for it this year, so maybe!

It looks like I'll have to miss this meetup; something else has come up. Hoist one for me, and I'll catch y'all next time.
