Wrath of Ashardalon!
posted by fiercekitten at 8:52 PM on October 30, 2012

"The usual", to all three?

I'm willing to host but I'd love to see it happen wherever it ends up being. Maybe there's a place (Caldera or somewhere else) where there's room to spread out and try some of the longer more involved tabletop games we haven't done in a while.

That said, I'm about to be a car owner once more (huzzah!) so it would be trivial for me to get more tables and folding chairs at the house for things like this. Anyone who's seen my basement rumpus room knows there's tons of room to spread out in.

But yeah, anywhere's cool. And if we play Illuminati, I promise not to kill all the dolphins.
posted by Greg_Ace at 8:59 PM on October 30, 2012

Location may depend on starting time.

Caldera is an option if we start at 5:00pm.

For games, we've recently acquired Powergrid, Wrath of Ashardalon, and Android: Netrunner.
A game of Illuminati would be great fun regardless of how the dolphins fare.

not while I'm out of town the week of thanksgiving, somewhere I can get to by bus from downtown. Can bring an entire duffel bag of games, including Dominion, 7 Wonders, Citadels, Red November, Cosmic Encounter. I really want to try Agricola and Powergrid sometime.
posted by ansate at 6:03 AM on October 31, 2012

Hey, we could totally host this at our place too if folks are interested. I am super down in any case.

Cosmic Encounter...Agricola...Powergrid

The latter I played one time at a previous gaming meetup and it was a lot of fun. I've been super jazzed to try Cosmic Encounter for a while now and have heard good things about Agricola.
posted by cortex at 7:47 AM on October 31, 2012

I picked up a few core sets of Android: Netrunner, and am game. There are, in fact, house rules for 4 or more players on the Net.
posted by pwnguin at 9:57 AM on October 31, 2012

As long as Sibrax remembers to bring back my CAH deck he accidentally packed up and took home with him last Game Day, I'm happy. :)
posted by Greg_Ace at 2:08 PM on October 31, 2012

I can offer Junta, Supremacy, Talisman, and a second copy of Illuminati, if there are enough folk expressing interest in that.

Thanksgiving week is bad for me, though.
posted by drfu at 3:20 PM on October 31, 2012

I used to play the original Cosmic Encounter quite a bit and it pretty much kicked ass (even the Avalon Hill/Hasbro version from 2000 is fun to play through). I've been curious to try the newest version.
If anyone brings Agricola, I'd be up for giving it a go.

I'm very curious to see how well this works.

I, uh, burnt out a little on CAH over the summer, so we could probably pass along the set we have for now. We introduced the game to a lot of people and brought them much joy. But eventually, when you've got the whole set memorized...
posted by Secretariat at 6:13 PM on October 31, 2012

Talisman

I don't think we'll get anyone to play that again, which is sort of why I got Wrath of Ashardalon.

We just had lunch at the Market St Mcmennamin's and they had some decent sized tables over where we were sitting. Maybe if we wanted to play in the afternoon we could try there. Or County Cork?
posted by fiercekitten at 7:51 PM on October 31, 2012

Yeah, Talisman. You can bring it along, but it will likely be banished to the corner. The last game of that is technically still going on.
Everything else sounds good though.

For a date, how does Saturday, December 1st sound?

And we have two great locations to pick from: Greg_Ace's or Cortex & Secretariat's.
posted by nickthetourist at 8:20 AM on November 1, 2012

Oh yeah, I woke up this morning thinking that I should remember to mention here that the Market St. McMennamins didn't have great lighting. So not great for reading cards or learning new games. Probably not bad for playing games people already know, though. Although from personal experience I'll say those chairs aren't great for long term sitting.

How do you feel about newbs?
posted by grootless at 12:40 PM on November 3, 2012

Newbs are great and welcome.
posted by cortex at 1:31 PM on November 3, 2012

I'm not sure I get the door reference, but our doors do open with ease. It's hard to keep our bathroom door closed, at the moment- the latch plate doesn't line up right. That should be fixable, though.

I am cool with newbs and December 1st. For people trying to decide about location- I'm so used to living in my house that I don't think of it as a inconvenient location, but depending on what part of the city you're coming from, it can take a little to get here on the bus. So, for disclosure for anyone who doesn't know/remember, our house is in North Portland, almost St. Johns, a block off of Lombard. There are two busses that come within reasonable walking distance. The 75 is a block away and frequent service, and the 35 is 5 blocks away on Portsmouth. (the 4 is also about 8 or 9 blocks away- but it makes more sense to transfer to the 75 rather than do that.) We could also possibly coordinate picking up or dropping off people at the Yellow Line Max.
posted by Secretariat at 3:32 PM on November 3, 2012

I'm not sure I get the door reference

People have remarked, with justification, on how hard my sliding-glass door is to open and close. But my front door works fine!

Also, since I now have a car I'd be able to carry up to 3 people from the SE area; Memail me if you want a ride (assuming Secretariat hosts this, of course).

December 1 sounds great.
posted by ansate at 8:41 PM on November 3, 2012

So it's sounding like December 1st at Cortex & Secretariat's house (easy door FTW!) will work for everyone. Now if only I could remember their address....maybe a particular mod could memail it to me so that I could make this thing official?

As for getting there, organizing some carpools might be good idea. We would be able to fit 2 full-size adults and 1 dwarf (or little person, if you prefer) and can meet at one of the west-side transit stops between Beaverton and downtown Portland.

It's set.

Now what should we play?

And what should be banished to the corner?

I also live in SE and am willing to transport. I am not much of a gamer but am in possession of the following probably totally passe' games:

Settlers of Catan
Pandemic
Munchkin
Burn in Hell

Wrath of Ashardalon
Fluxx
Netrunner

Oh hey, I should probably click the button that says I'm attending! I have some ideas on food and stuff, but the date for this is far enough out that it just seems too soon to think about that. People should probably focus their food and drink thoughts on the Pregaming the Holidays meetup, if you're going to that.

Here's a partial list of what we have at the house already:
Carcassone Hunters & Gatherers
Settlers of Catan (older version, no expansions)
Fluxx (plain fluxx. I'd be interested in trying some zombie fluxx!)
Arkham Horror and various expansions
Space Alert
Apples to Apples (we could try a mashup with Cards against Humanity?)
Dominion (but no expansions)
Zombie Dice
Scrabble
Scattergories

I'll comment if I see anyone mention anything that I think we've got so you don't have to haul extra stuff.

Sounds fun! I would also be interested in playing a game of Agricola. Shall I bring it, or is it already coming? I can also bring Kingsburg, Ticket to Ride (Marklin version), Alhambra, Powergrid, Blokus, Rumis, Seafarers of Catan, and Quiddler. Are any of these worth bringing?

I know you're kidding, but I was framed! Framed I tells ya!

I'll have my usual assortment of games, but if all goes well I should also have a Wii U by then. Would people be interested in that, or should I save it for another time?

I'd be up for that.
posted by nickthetourist at 10:39 PM on November 13, 2012

I'm stoked about the Wii U but I worry that mashing up board game meetup and video game meetup may be sort of distracting and confusing. We'd talked about doing a Rock Band meetup at one point, maybe we combine that with a Wii U exhibition so everybody's on board specifically with the whole audiovisual spectacle thing?
posted by cortex at 6:49 AM on November 14, 2012

That sounds good to me.
posted by Sibrax at 11:26 AM on November 14, 2012

I think I'll bring:
(cooperative)
Pandemic
Red November (AND up to 7 players)
(lots of players)
7 Wonder
Citadels
(haven't played in too long)
Cosmic Encounter

You people keep scheduling these for days when I cannot attend. It's because you hate me, isn't it?
posted by dersins at 3:06 PM on November 19, 2012

posted by nickthetourist at 10:18 PM on November 22, 2012

Heya, so, a food idea! Because it seems like gaming for a few hours starting in the afternoon means wanting to eat something at some point.

There's a pretty good sandwich shop near the house, East Side Deli, that we could put a group order in for to have cheap convenient tasty food available Saturday afternoon with minimum effort. Sandwiches run six bucks a piece and are pretty darned big; they've also got hotdogs and salads if that's more your thing.

So, if folks find that appealing, take a look at the menu for their Lombard location and let me know what you'd like, then just bring cash along with you to toss in the pot to cover it.
posted by cortex at 3:48 PM on November 27, 2012

I was just thinking about what we were going to do for food....brilliant idea, cortex!

Now, what about beverages? Should we just plan on bringing what we like?
posted by nickthetourist at 4:56 PM on November 27, 2012

I figure we'll stock a couple six packs and some cola and a bottle of some sort of brown liquor around as a basic firewall, but if you have any particular thirst then bringing something along sounds like a good plan, yeah.
posted by cortex at 4:58 PM on November 27, 2012

Oh, you just don't want to deal with making food because it interferes with creating new LARP Trek episodes!

Nevertheless, deli sandwiches and brought beverages sound like an excellent plan.

Cortex, how far ahead should we place our order? Or alternatively, how late can we be with our order?
posted by mimo at 11:05 AM on November 28, 2012

I feel like planning ahead to the degree that is doable is a decent idea; probably we don't need like TWO DAYS WARNING or anything for a dozen sandwiches but if most folks know what they'll want ahead of time then I can put it the bulk of the order earlier in the day on Saturday and then just call in the stragglers as a manageable one-off on short notice?

I dunno, I'm probably overthinking it.
posted by cortex at 11:11 AM on November 28, 2012

It turns out my flight leaves a day later than I thought, so I may actually be able to make it to a game day for the first time ever. So you may find it more difficult to ignore me.
posted by dersins at 11:41 AM on November 28, 2012

Yay! I like it when you are a difficulty.
posted by cortex at 11:51 AM on November 28, 2012

Yeah, basically my thought was, we do a lot of potlucks, let's try something else! We'll provide some sort of snacky chips or something too. No pressure, if you'd rather bring food to share or bring your own personal food, that's fine too. Or we can order pizza if that's what people would rather do. I was just thinking about what's happened at other gaming gatherings I've been to, and a group sandwich order has been one of the smoother(and most conducive to "let's get on with the games!) plans that I've encountered.

Plus I think this sandwich place kind of covers all the bases- they have lots of vegetarian sandwiches, salads if you're eating low-carb, and I think they might even have a gluten-free bread option? They're usually super fast, so I don't think we need to order earlier than Saturday.
posted by Secretariat at 3:53 PM on November 28, 2012

Whoa, I didn't think I'd be able to go, but my schedule unexpectedly shifted that day!

Is it okay if I arrive around 4?

I can bring The Downfall of Pompeii and Goldbräu. Maybe a couple 2-player games as well, to even out groups.
