Philadelphia - Nerd Nite Meetup

Wed September 19 at 7:00 PM, Frankford Hall
1210 Frankford Ave, Philadelphia, PA, USA (Map & Directions)
Let's keep the Philly meetup momentum going! Is anyone interested in going to Nerd Nite in September?
Here are the details:

The next Nerd Nite is Wednesday, September 19, 7 p.m. at Frankford Hall (1210 Frankford Ave.). As far as I can tell, the speakers/topics for September haven't been announced yet, but you can look at the Nerd Nite updates page for descriptions of previous events. (Edit: The September topics are up now at that page! One about the history of the Pennsylvania Dutch, one about historic beer technology, and one about freshwater conservation.)

Since it starts relatively early on a work night, let's plan on meeting in time for the speakers and then staying afterwards to hang out. The event is advertised as "doors at 7, show at 7:30" - I'll aim on getting there no later than 7 to grab a table, but there's always the possibility that at least some of us will have to stand.

This meetup was originally suggested with options of going to Nerd Nite or Science on Tap. There is another meetup set up for Science on Tap now.

Frankford Hall is right around the corner from me so I'd be down for a meetup. I have work until 8pm so I'd probably miss the bulk of the speakers but I'd love to hang out afterwards if people stick around. I can probably convince my SO to come too.

I could probably do Science on Tap but maybe not Frankford Hall, because I'm sad and am hampered by Septa. Definitely up for another Philly meetup though, especially one science/museum -themed!

Frankford Hall is just a couple blocks from the Girard blue line station, if knowing that makes any difference to you. I'd be going there and back again on the train.

I'm happy to set up meetups for both if there's interest in both of them - we have a couple of weeks to gauge interest first. :) And I am definitely all for people staying after the lecture portion to hang out!

Nerd Night sounds neat. I haven't been to Frankford Hall or a meetup yet but this sounds like a good idea!

Oh sure, keep up the momentum ... without me

sobs inconsolably

I hope to visit again. I like Philadelia and its mefites.

Nerd Nite could be fun. I can't do Science on Tap, sadly- I get off work at 6:00 and even if I haul ass, it's a 30-ish minute commute.

We're getting a lot more votes for Nerd Nite so far, so I'm going to confirm this event as a Nerd Nite meetup. I might still go ahead and create a second event for Science on Tap - jetlagaddict, you said you would probably go to that one, are you still interested? Anyone else for Science on Tap as an additional meetup?

Whoops sorry, delayed, yes, I would still be interested in Science on Tap! The timing just doesn't work out for getting into and out of the city for Frankford Hall.

I should be able to make it to Science on Tap! Walking to/from the Market East station and the bar should be okay right? Google maps says it only takes about 15 minutes (I'm still kind of new to the area...).

Hooray! I'll set up a second meetup for Science on Tap soon, then. Oliva Porphyria, you can definitely walk from Market East to National Mechanics quickly and easily. They're less than a mile apart and the walk will be entirely on Market Street until you take a right onto 3rd to get to the venue. The stretch of Market around Market East isn't the prettiest, but it's well lit and should be a safe walk the whole way. If you have any concerns about the return trip after dark, I have to head in that direction anyway and could walk with you back to Market East (and it sounds like jetlagaddict might be making the same walk too).

If you're thinking about going to Nerd Nite, too, you'd just take the extra step of switching from regional rail to the Market-Frankford line (the blue line, in the eastbound/Frankford direction) at Market East and riding about a half-dozen stops to the Girard stop. Feel free to MeMail me for any additional logistics questions - I don't have a car so I know how to get around on transit and foot pretty well.

Ok great! I'll have to wait and see how my schedule pans out before I can commit to Nerd Nite, but I might be able to make it to that too.

Just checking in - is this still on everyone's radar? Are any of you pretty sure you'll make it? After Oliva Porphyria and I were the only ones to come out for the Science on Tap meetup, I just want to make sure I'm not going to end up sitting alone at Frankford Hall. :)

Yeah I missed Science on Tap but I'm still tracking this one. I should be there, barring anything unforeseen.

Science on Tap is awesome, Mondays are just a general impossibility for me. The topics for this week's Nerd Nite are less rad than usual, but on the pro side Frankford Hall has all of their Oktoberfest beers out. I have been hitting those pretty hard and can report that they are, indeed, fantastic.

I'll try to be there around 7 to help snag a table. Not sure how late these things usually go but I do have to cut out around 9 or 9:30.

Well I've never been to a meetup but I may be able to come, provided my class gets out early (80% likelihood). How am I going to recognize people??

I plan on wearing my Super Mario collage shirt and jeans. Plus, you know me and probably still have my number so you can always text.

I expect to be there early (between 6:00 and 6:30) so I'm hoping to be able to get a table for all of us. I'm wearing a red short-sleeved blouse and black pants, and I look just like my profile picture, except I'm not wearing glasses today. A non-MeFi friend is joining me for dinner and staying for Nerd Nite, so you can look for the combo of person-with-my-description sitting with person-with-long-curly-red-hair and hopefully we won't be too hard to find.

I'll have my smartphone with me and will leave a comment here with our table location, so check back here for more information in an hour or so.

Ok, I'm here and I've staked out a large table. Come in the door, turn right (toward the movie screen), I'm at the second large table on the right. Until more people show up I will leave my big, bright blue backpack on the table.

Also, there is a $5 charge for the event, which I forgot about and which is not totally obvious on the Nerd Nite page. Sorry for not mentioning this earlier. If the $5 is a dealbreaker - I don't think they enforce this really hard. You could also just show up late and hang out with us after the talks. Apologies again about not noticing/mentioning the event fee.

Thanks to all who came out! It's too bad that it was so loud and the event ran so long, because it didn't leave much time for us to talk, but I had a good time and I hope everyone else did too. See you all soon at game night?

Yep, I had a blast seeing everyone but it was almost impossible to hear. The only possible solution is MORE MEETUPS!
