Labor Day BBQ at mrzarquon's (with L.A. refugees in attendance)

Mon September 3 at 3:30 PM, Casa de Zarquon (Chris's house)
Portland, OR, USA (Map & Directions)
Hello, Portland! Mr. Scody and I will be visiting your fair city over Labor Day... anyone interested in a get-together to celebrate the holiday, grill various foodstuffs, sing a chorus or two of "Solidarity Forever," etc.?
Location-wise, we'll be staying in the Pearl District, and will be relying on this exotic thing people outside of L.A. evidently refer to as "public transportation." Hope to see some of you while we're in town!

UPDATED: mrzarquon has graciously offered to host said bbq, with a start time of around 3:00-4:00. Looking forward to it!

So, I didn't have a plan for a labor day BBQ, but I can definitely host one.

EEEEEEEEEEEEE YES YES YES!

Labor Day is five days before I'm due to have a babby, but if we're able, both TheDonF and I would love to see you guys!

Mrzarquon's BBQ is quality, and his house is easy to get to via public transportation from the Pearl. It sounds good to me!

Awesome, sounds good to me. Mrzarquon, send me your coordinates and a time you'd like people to show up, and I can update/confirm this.

I have sent you the coordinates.

In a break from tradition, I will not spend the entire event playing Beatles Rock Band drums.
posted by cortex at 9:57 AM on August 6, 2012

I mean, if you guys want to bring your projector over, we could setup a place to play rock band all day in the basement or garage as well.
posted by mrzarquon at 11:22 AM on August 6, 2012

Moving the projector we currently own is only a couple of degrees less difficult than putting a car-sized rover on Mars, so that's a no go. We can totally have a Rock Band meetup at our place some time if folks want, though.

Yesssss rock band meetup

of course, the only time I ever met cortex was during an L.A. Beatles Rock Band meetup, so I don't know how I'll recognize him when we're not dueting on various tracks from Rubber Soul.

Just look for the guy with the really long brown hai—oh wait

Oh hey, we might be up for this! I have Grand Plans to redo the bathroom that weekend, but I could schedule in a Pause for MF BBQ Funtimes.

Wife and I are headed for a road trip down to LA a few days after that, but it might be fun to swing up before then. When are you back home, scody?
posted by Danf at 9:19 AM on August 8, 2012

I would very much like to meet you, Scody, so I'm going to try to make it.

Dan: we're in Portland that Sunday through Wednesday (morning), at which point we're off northwards to WA for a week. So not back to L.A. till the night of the 12th. Hope our paths manage to cross one way or another!

Just as an FYI, I am planning to open this up to my non MeFite friends as well.

Also, for the BBQ itself, do folks want to bring things?

I am going to be making Brisket and a giant bowl of Punch.

And I will probably get a big thing of grilling sausages.

Sides, vegetarian options, and especially things cooked ahead of time would be welcome (I have a tiny kitchen).

Bouncing this to see if folks have any interest in volunteering bringing snacks and food. I know it was made a while back, but want to make sure folks are still planning on coming by, not that I mind cooking a ton of brisket just for myself.
posted by mrzarquon at 3:40 PM on August 23, 2012

We're definitely coming! If you point us in the direction of some veggie (or at least fish-y) options for me, we can bring those.
posted by scody at 5:37 PM on August 23, 2012

There are a few whole foods between where you are staying and my place, if you go by bus. They should have plenty of things if you want to grab on the way over.
posted by mrzarquon at 6:22 PM on August 28, 2012

We're DOIN' it. And we'll bring some respectably non-brisket-y comestibles.
posted by cgc373 at 10:40 PM on August 28, 2012

Would you mind a few Texas refugees to judge your brisket? We're definite -maybes- as we're in town for a limited time, have periods of intense "meeting people I haven't seen in ten years" interspersed with intense periods of boredom, and not at all sure where we'll be and what we'll be doing at any one point in time.
posted by SpecialK at 11:19 PM on August 30, 2012

I certainly wouldn't mind seeing some Texas refugees, although I can't speak as to whether it's ok to get judgy with the brisket. :)

There's a "fish truck" down the street (yes, next to the food carts, the beer bus, and the farm stand) that purports to be selling smoked fish, so I think I'll check that out today. If it looks good, I'll bring some of that. I'll probably also bring some cherry tomatoes and cornbread.

The trick is to describe it as a "brisket appreciation junket".

They are more than welcome to come.

Also, there will be Dandy's Horseshoes (aka, cornhole).

TheDonF and I won't be able to attend as the aforementioned babby arrived a week ago and we are up to our necks in newborn love haze and surgical recovery.

Scody my love, I'm so sorry to miss you! I'm sending whuffles from across town.

Have fun everyone! Nom that brisket for me!
posted by Specklet at 6:44 PM on September 1, 2012

Way to breed! Sorry we won't see you guys.
posted by cortex at 6:46 PM on September 1, 2012

Oh, congratulations! And it's probably ok for you guys to skip this meetup. I guess that's a reasonable excuse. :)
posted by Secretariat at 6:48 PM on September 1, 2012

Best Excuse Ever not to come to a meetup! Congrats and lots of love to La Famille Specklet!

Hey, for folks bringing things, put your first name and Mefi Nick here, along with whatever it is you are bringing. I'm going to share this across the groups of invitees, so hopefully we don't end up with 13 gallons of guacamole and no chips.

mrz, it looks like Cecilia invited Orion and the boys. There's always a chance of delays/cancellation with youths such as them are. Just a heads up.

I am ok with 13 gallons of guacamole, as long as you have a spoon. Heck, I'll bring my own spoon.

We are just too slammed this weekend to come up (down?) there, getting ready for our road trip South. I hope everyone has a great time!

Cecilia is on her way! But she's coming from a boating trip. I'm still at home puttering. Frittering. Nattering too.

ceege, cecilia, we totally booched saying hello to you even though we saw you, but then you were gone and oh no! Hi in retrospect!
posted by cortex at 9:17 PM on September 3, 2012

Sorry we missed all of you! We ended up getting kdrunk on mimosas out at my friend's place in Hillsboro and now we're going to be really hung over riding the train to our early flight tomorrow, which I'm sure is going to be AWESOME.
