Trek in the Park- Journey to Babel

Sun August 12 at 4:30 PM, Cathedral Park (Under the St. Johns Bridge)
Cathedral City Park, N Edison St, Portland, OR, USA (Map & Directions)
Trek in the Park! Located in Cathedral Park under the St. Johns Bridge. The performance starts at 5pm, but we should get there early to make sure we can find space together- so I set the meetup time to 4:30.
The episode they are performing this year is Journey to Babel. Should be fun! This is the first year they've been in Cathedral Park, so I don't know exactly what they layout will be- hopefully more spacious than previous years. We'll probably want to plan on sort of a picnic blanket/ maybe low chair profile type setup, rather than a normal height lawn chair sort of thing.

And, perhaps some food/drinks in St. Johns after the performance?

If this date doesn't work for you, they perform all month, Saturdays and Sundays at 5:00pm August 4-26. If you're going a different weekend, maybe drop a note in here anyhow!

Totally interested. And Kpele thinks the guy who plays Spock is "super-hot".

Can't on the first or last weekends in August, though.

I've been curious to see Trek in the Park. Most of those weekends should be ok, as of now at least.

Hey, I had plans to check out Trek in the Park this year, anyway! I'm in!

Is Saturday or Sunday generally better? For us as a group, I mean.

I'm personally fine with either- but I do plan to go to the BBQ Baby meetup, so not whatever day that is.

Also interested! 2nd or 3rd weekend of the month will likely work for me, doesn't matter if it's Saturday or Sunday.
posted by dorey_oh at 1:03 PM on July 17, 2012

Ok, forget the 3rd weekend. That's when my coworker takes his son to college, I may or may not get stuck working call. But the 11th or 12th are still good!

My work schedule is an ever-moving target some months. Turns out I'm only working the first weekend of Aug, the rest are free. Hooray!

I went ahead and set the date for my event as Sunday Aug. 26, so you've basically got the whole month to choose from for this one.

Ok- how about Sunday, August 12th?

Ok, I made it for realsies.

How long does it run? An hour?
posted by curious nu at 5:56 PM on July 28, 2012

About that, yeah, based on what we saw a couple years ago. It's an episode of TOS, minus commercial breaks, plus room for laughs and set changes.

Work suuuucks today. Glad to have an event coming up to look forward to.

Does anyone know Portland Parks & Rec's regulations regarding alcohol?

I ask because I would like to bring some.
posted by fiercekitten at 12:43 PM on August 11, 2012

I don't know the actual regulations, but I wouldn't be surprised if they're on the not-so-permissive side. That said, if you're being reasonably discreet it probably doesn't matter what the regs are. Mildly drinking beer and then not chucking the empties at nearby people or shouting drunkenly is probably about all that that requires.

I think we're going to get there at least an hour early, to try to save some space. I'll have a red parasol that you can use to locate us.

I don't think alcohol is generally legal in Portland parks without a permit. Since this is sort of an event, rather than us having a picnic, I'm guessing if you brought super obvious bottles or cans of beer you would be quickly advised to stop it and put them in your car, maybe even by Trek in the Park people. So probably more the water bottle filled with a mixed drink rather than the cocktail shaker/bartender flip tricks type of situation.

However, I was thinking of going to Plews or Fixin' To after the performance. Plews generally has the largest and most interesting selection of beers in St. Johns, but they also will have had the Humulus Maximus IPA and IIPA festival on Friday and Saturday. I asked them on Facebook if we could expect any non-IPAs this weekend, and they said that at minimum there would be a lighter beer and a cider available all weekend.

St. Johns has other options too if these don't sound good- I actually can hardly think of a business or restaurant where you can't get a beer.

Rumor over here is that even though there's more space this year, things still get crowded quick! So at least an hour early is very good, Secretariat.

We're here, dead center on the stage, about sixty feet back. Sec has a red parasol. Room for a few more staked out, nick and fierce are en route already.
