Board Games in Seattle

Sat July 21 at 2:00 PM, Cafe Mox
5105 Leary Ave NW, Seattle, WA, USA (Map & Directions)
At the last meetup, there was a hunger for a board gaming day. Let's do it.
We'll be at Cafe Mox on Saturday, July 21st, from 2 pm until people tire of tiny cardboard chits. Bring games, or just bring yourself, but come join us.

Apparently, grouse is having his silly birthday that day, so how about the 21st?

Works for me.

Either of those works for me.

Subjects to kids, relatives, etc... I am interested.

Not sure I can extend to drunken post-midnight karaoke again in a hurry though.

What about Drunken Post-Midnight Karaoke: The Board Game?
posted by grouse at 2:19 PM on July 8, 2012 [1 favorite]

Booked. I'll have a bag of games in tow, but more is always better. Then, after midnight, Artw will become a pumpkin and we can serenade him to sleep.

So, if it extends well into the evening greenarchist and I can probably come. We have a dive for our invertebrate ID class on Saturday!!!!!

I'm playing soccer on the Eastside at some time that afternoon, but if it's going to go later and I don't injure anything, I might make it.

I'm a maybe - might be going out of town that weekend.

A-ha, the fabled boardgame meet up ... sure, I'm in.

What sorts of board games? (That will help Ms. Kwine decide whether she's interested). I believe that we have dinner plans that night, but I should be in for at least a few hours.
posted by Kwine at 7:01 AM on July 15, 2012

Oh, thanks for organizing!
I think I'll be able to make it, but a bit later than the 2pm kickoff.

Will practice dice rolling skills this week.

I can bring Agricola, Dominion, 7 Wonders, and Dixit.
posted by grouse at 12:53 PM on July 15, 2012

I plan to bring a few of varying complexities. A lot of my "board" games are actually card games (see: grouse's 7 Wonders and Dominion). Right now I'm leaning towards Elder Sign, Blood Bowl Team Manager, Eminent Domain, Pandemic, Battlestar Galactica, and maybe a couple others I'll think of when I'm actually looking at the library.

What kinds of games does Mrs. Kwine like?
posted by Errant at 8:14 PM on July 15, 2012

Ms. Kwine had made other plans, but I'll be there by my lonesome at 2.

Saturday's my birthday and Mox is just a block away, no plans until six so I shall try to swing by for a bit. I'll school you all at pinball!

So I just discovered that Cafe Mox has private rooms for rent. They're 20/hr unless the food/drink bill reaches 100 or more, in which case it's waived. I figure with 5 confirmed and 9 maybes, we'll easily hit that over the course of a few hours, so what do you guys think about me inquiring about renting one of those rooms?
posted by Errant at 3:47 PM on July 19, 2012

Just $100 over the whole period? Not $100/hour? I'm not planning on spending $20 myself (although it has happened), so I think we'd need more of the maybes.
posted by grouse at 4:18 PM on July 19, 2012

This is what it says on their website:

"The rooms can be rented for $20/hour, or if you plan to eat and drink and your tab reaches $100 or more we will waive the room fee. If everyone in your party is over 21, you can order beer and wine from the cafe. You cannot bring your own alcohol in the private rooms."
posted by Errant at 4:32 PM on July 19, 2012

No guest after all. I still plan to be there but will be working later than originally expected, so probably won't arrive until 5 at the earliest. I will commit to buying some food/drink, but $20 worth is not in the budget...but it looks like the rooms are already booked from 6-10 on Saturday anyway.

Games I can bring (if there is interest): Scrabble, Guillotine, Qwirkle, Qwirkle Cubes.

Ok, obviously the room thing is out then, no worries. See you guys tomorrow.

I had zero sleep last night and am now dragging myself through my workday. I am uncertain whether I will make it there tonight :-(

Looks like I'm out :-(

Have fun!

I'm a tall white guy with glasses, today I am wearing a green and white plaid shirt and jeans. I'll bring Torres and Wits and Wagers.
posted by Kwine at 12:16 PM on July 21, 2012

We'll see how I feel in an hour or two but this cold absolutely sucks (yay for getting a cold before OSCON so I end up talking all day with drugs to keep me together?)

If we do show, we might be three as I have a friend visiting from out of town (though I think he's on mefi too).

Finishing my lunch, and then I'll pick up my games and catch a 44 over there.

What I have: Dominion (original, Alchemy, Intrigue), 7 Wonders, and Dixit. Any requests?

That was a hell of a lot of fun. I'll set up the next one soon; hopefully we can make this a monthly thing. Awesome to see you who showed up; deeply missed, you who couldn't make it.

I'm all for making this a monthly thing too. Please to have more!

I had a nice time, thanks for organizing Errant. Who won the 7 Wonders game?
posted by Kwine at 9:37 PM on July 22, 2012

Errant did.

*reads rules for 7 wonders. Hangs head in shame*

That was a lot of fun! How'd elder signs turn out?

Kwine, I think errant won, I probably won for the most awesome wooden spoon:)

My soccer game managed to be perfectly timed so I was on the eastside 3-7, I'm sorry I missed it. I'd love to come to another one if organized, although I'll be away most of August and September. (Possibly interesting to this audience: I've eard rumors recently that the games store on pine is expanding to a mox-style place in the newly empty Travellers cafe, although it would be at least a few months away given it's just empty space now.)

I work less than a block away from the old Travelers cafe space! That would be totally full of awesomeness!

We, unusually, beat the shit out of Elder Sign, which does not happen often, I can tell you.

jacalata, I've heard that too. I have a game on order over there, so I should ask them about that.

I did win 7 Wonders, but I was quite surprised to have done so; I felt sure grouse was going to take it.
posted by Errant at 7:33 PM on July 23, 2012

Does anyone have Arkham Horror? We should play that sometime.
posted by grouse at 9:08 PM on July 23, 2012

I do, and I could definitely bring it. It is, however, a very long game, like 4 hours long or more, and it takes up a lot of table space. On the other hand, it seats up to eight, so while it takes a long time it's also a game pretty much the whole group could play together.

check out this Kickstarter from Gamma Ray Games for the new lounge. (I do find it a little weird to raise money for a business like this, but I guess they have the right audience.)
