GAME DAY!? Location Change!

Sun June 3 at 2:00 PM, The Home of Greg_Ace
4414 SE Center St, Portland, OR, USA (Map & Directions)
We should have another Game Day soon.
Location Change!:

We shall now congregate at Greg_Ace's abode.
(I received a call from Caldera today saying that they would not be operating under summer hours until later in June)

I will update the address with the exact location as we get closer to the date.

That is an acceptable month. Caldera should be back at summer hours by that point if we want to use the upstairs space again.

Caldera would work. But we really need a high turnout if we go there.

I'm up for a game day.
posted by Secretariat at 8:49 AM on May 5, 2012

If for some reason we don't get enough people to snag Caldera's upstairs room, I'd be glad to host, but otherwise Caldera sounds good.
posted by Greg_Ace at 10:07 AM on May 5, 2012

Yes, games. But, point of order: June is not "soon".

And, let me remind you all of bowling on the 19th.

June is soon! Naught but a month away.

I have a lot to accomplish in May; I prefer to think June is far off.
posted by mimo at 7:21 PM on May 5, 2012

Mmm...games. I'm in.
posted by klausman at 10:28 PM on May 5, 2012

So we could set Caldera as the location, but if there's limited (<10) confirmed we could meet at Greg's.
Mostly I don't want to reserve Caldera for 10-12 people and have only 5-6 show.
We kind of looked like jerks when that happened!
posted by nickthetourist at 8:36 AM on May 6, 2012

Let's talk days, then, to try and figure out how many people we're likely to have, and then match that up with a venue. How about June 3rd, 23rd or 24th?
posted by Secretariat at 11:03 AM on May 6, 2012

I vote for 3rd, because I always vote for most-soonest.
posted by curious nu at 3:20 PM on May 6, 2012

Actually, June 2nd or 3rd would probably work well.
I typically reserve Sunday for doing homework (because I'm a heathen!), but I can always get done it ahead of time.
posted by nickthetourist at 6:09 PM on May 6, 2012

As a recent transplant to the area, I'll probably show. What sorts of gaming are we in for?
posted by pwnguin at 12:22 AM on May 7, 2012

Games we've played previously:

Illuminati
Cards Aginst Humanity
Dominion
Talisman
Space Alert
Greed Quest
Munchkin

There are more that I am forgetting, but you probably get the idea.
posted by nickthetourist at 6:58 AM on May 7, 2012

June 3rd works for me. (The 2nd would also be OK after 3pm).
posted by mimo at 9:19 AM on May 7, 2012

I'll join the growing consensus for the weekend of June 2nd/3rd - either day's fine with me.
posted by Greg_Ace at 11:54 AM on May 7, 2012

Are you kidding me? You guys play Illuminati? Oh, I am so totally down for that. That or Munchkin. Do we need decks? I have both (though if anyone has any INWO decks, I'd totally love to play that as well).

I'm going to have to watch this for more details of this.
posted by daq at 1:28 PM on May 7, 2012

Haven't done Illuminati in awhile, but I'd be down for it again.

SAVE THE DOLPHINS!!!!
posted by mimo at 2:05 PM on May 7, 2012

Any weekend day is usually good for me.

But if we want to be done with Illuminati by June we should start now.
posted by Sibrax at 3:18 PM on May 7, 2012

Illuminati can take a couple hours but the real time sink is Talisman! 3 1/2 hours and we were only 2/3 of the way through!!!!

The guy at Rainy Day Games said that games like that just take a long time, but suggested DungeonQuest or Descent as quicker playing but similar.
posted by fiercekitten at 6:57 PM on May 7, 2012

daq: "(though if anyone has any INWO decks, I'd totally love to play that as well)."

Sadly, I left my illuminati and netrunner cards in another state. Because, I mean, who plays those anyways?

daq: (though if anyone has any INWO decks, I'd totally love to play that as well)

I know I have a couple boxes of INWO (with Assassins!) around here somewhere, but it's been so long since I played that I think I'd rather not.
However, I do have an INWO standalone called SubGenius that I could bring along.

Sounds good to me! I can bring some games- what do we need? Any requests for short games, long games, nerdier games, less nerdy games...
posted by Secretariat at 9:30 AM on May 9, 2012

Trivial Pursuit, with the Baby Boomer card set?

kidding, kidding
posted by Greg_Ace at 11:45 AM on May 9, 2012

Maybe I'll bring Trivial Pursuit, The Year in Review, 1993. (Just kidding, I don't have that. I might actually have the Baby Boomer set somewhere, though. And I'm not bringing it.)
posted by Secretariat at 2:55 PM on May 9, 2012

I'm not sure if it makes me nerdy or not, but I wouldn't mind playing Pictionary or Scattergories. (I have both games.)
posted by vespabelle at 2:01 PM on May 10, 2012

Actually, suggesting those games may make you relatively less nerdy. I'd be up for both.
posted by mimo at 2:38 PM on May 10, 2012

Both of those would be good.
posted by curious nu at 4:02 PM on May 10, 2012

I think we've played Pictionary exactly once at a meetup and I had a tremendous time, but then I grew up playing Pictionary with my family so it's like an old blanket for me. I would happily play it again.

Does anyone remember when Caldera switches to summer hours?

Well, if the first comment above is accurate, pretty soon.
posted by mimo at 9:23 AM on May 11, 2012

It looks like we'll have a pretty good turnout this time around, so I have left a message with Caldera to confirm reservation of the space.
How long do y'all think we can stand each other?
3 hours?
4 hours?
5 hours?
More hours than that?
posted by nickthetourist at 2:06 PM on May 11, 2012

If I recall correctly, last time I attended game day at Caldera it seems like we weren't really finished when we hit our time limit. So maybe shoot for 5 hours, and if we get done earlier we get done earlier?
posted by Greg_Ace at 12:03 PM on May 12, 2012

On the other hand, if we go for Pictionary instead of Illuminati my drawing hand might get tired far sooner than 5 hours.

Hey, he started it!

Don't make me come back there and separate you two! I will turn around and we will go back home, and there will no games for anyone!
posted by mimo at 3:27 PM on May 12, 2012

We've had to change the venue.
Caldera will not be open for Summer hours until later in June.
So, Greg_Ace has offered his house once again.

As with past meetups at Greg's, it'll be a potluck.
Which means we have to decide what we're going to bring.
posted by nickthetourist at 6:34 PM on May 15, 2012

Just to make sure nobody misses the update, the location has been moved to my house since Caldera hasn't started their summer hours yet. So we'll need to bring our own food and beverages. and we might need some extra chairs and a folding table or two if possible.
posted by Greg_Ace at 6:37 PM on May 15, 2012

on non-preview: what Nick said.
posted by Greg_Ace at 6:38 PM on May 15, 2012

Zomg location change

Thanks, Greg. We can bring 4 folding chairs, but I don't have a table. Would people enjoy it if I brought some growlers filled with interesting beers from Plew's Brews, for sort of a casual beer-tasting thing? I think I only have 3 growlers, so it won't be super extensive or anything. They usually have 4 or 5 IPA type beers available, a couple of light to middle beers or ales, and a couple of awesome stouts or porters. Often they have a cider on tap too. Or I can just bring bottles of something instead.
posted by Secretariat at 6:59 PM on May 15, 2012

yay casa del greg.

Secretariat: growlers sound good and I'd chip in on some cider. Just need to make sure people know they're in the fridge; I've brought growlers the last few times and always wind up taking way more home than I expect, since they're not as obvious as bottles.
posted by curious nu at 7:20 PM on May 15, 2012

I'd be willing to chip in on growlers as well.

Light on the IPA's, though... :-)
posted by Greg_Ace at 7:56 PM on May 15, 2012

Greg_Ace: Light on the IPA's, though... :-)

Yeah, what he said.

And I totally forgot about requesting tables and chairs.
I think we have a table we could bring along.
posted by nickthetourist at 8:02 PM on May 15, 2012

Hey, I don't think I realized there had been growlers of tasty stuff at previous meetups!

I think their price for growler fills is still $7 before 7pm- so it's really not too bad. I won't get any IPAs unless there's any requests- I generally don't like them either.
posted by Secretariat at 7:34 AM on May 16, 2012

I will gladly support any non-IPA growler acquisition.
posted by mimo at 9:45 AM on May 16, 2012

We have a table and about 5 chairs we could bring. For the non-drink portion of the dinner, I'll be bringing scalloped potatoes.
posted by fiercekitten at 9:12 PM on May 17, 2012

I'll probably smoke some meat (pause for gasps of astonishment). Unless anyone has a specific request, maybe I'll do that smoked salmon dip. That seemed to go over well last time I made it.
posted by Greg_Ace at 2:24 PM on May 18, 2012

Are there any special requests for games?
Who's bringing what?
posted by nickthetourist at 8:28 PM on May 20, 2012

I have 2 chairs and my Munchkin and Illuminati decks that I can bring. I will also bring some non-alcoholic beverages that I can drink (can't have normal soda or anything with apple juice, sorry to be lame). Looking forward to actually meeting some Mefi people IRL.

daq: I have 2 chairs and my Munchkin and Illuminati decks that I can bring.

We can bring:
Cards Against Humanity
Carcassonne
Milles Bornes
Talisman
Fluxx (or StarFluxx)
Burn In Hell
Gang of Four
Lunch Money
and others I am forgetting
posted by nickthetourist at 8:08 PM on May 25, 2012

I am the keeper of the 1000 blank white cards. I will bring them.
posted by mimo at 7:41 AM on May 26, 2012

So, FOODS. This is important!

Greg is smoking meat (some provided by him, and I'll be contributing a chicken or two as well)
I'll be bringing some kind o' vegetable dish (stuffed bell peppers, maybe)

Last time it seems like we had a glut of desserts. They were all tasty! But possibly overkill.
Beverages and drinks of all sorts are always welcome.
posted by curious nu at 5:55 PM on May 30, 2012

I shall be bringing something with gin to properly great the coming of summer. Maybe pimms and a buncha fruit maybe just G&T, but given my scheduling and lack of immediate prior fridge option, liquor is my only recourse.

I will probably be bringing some quantity of store-bought potato salad. Sorry I won't be able to do better this time.

Let me know what to bring, otherwise it'll probably be sides or some such. Plus maybe penguins if I'm feeling industrious.
posted by geckoinpdx at 11:18 AM on May 31, 2012

Food: I'll bring a vegetable dish, probably some sort of asparagus salad. Also likely a dessert, to be determined.

Other: have a card table and 4 chairs, will bring them along.
posted by dorey_oh at 11:28 AM on May 31, 2012

Might bring a pitcher of watermelon lemonade, too. Have half a watermelon anyway, may as well juice it.
posted by dorey_oh at 11:40 AM on May 31, 2012

I'll be bringing cookies, a case of Mexican Coke, Cards Against Humanity, Space Alert, Dominion, and... maybe some other games I'm forgetting. It sounds like we're good on chairs?
posted by Sibrax at 5:13 PM on May 31, 2012

Yep, I think we've met our chair and table quota. Thanks to all of the contributors!
posted by Greg_Ace at 6:28 PM on May 31, 2012

I'll bring deviled eggs or some sort of salad thing and Pictionary (and scratch paper and pencils.)
posted by vespabelle at 11:12 AM on June 1, 2012

Pictionary

Yesssssss.

If anyone's strapped for food ideas, sides of any sort are fine, as are things like chips, crackers, popcorn, whatever.
posted by curious nu at 12:32 PM on June 1, 2012

And dammit now I have to bow out. I was looking forward to meeting everyone too. Sadly, friends from out of town are moving into town and arriving on June 3rd, so I have to play host to road weary travelers. Whenever anyone wants to play a pickup round of Illuminati or Munchkin, send me a Memail.

I'm still planning on bringing beers- probably 3 growlers, and a cooler of ice to put them in. Here's what looks to be a pretty current tap list for Plews, where I'm going to fill my growlers: tap list!

Assuming this is the same taplist I encounter tomorrow when I show up at Plews, maybe Gilgamesh HopScotch, Off the Rail Over the Mountain, and Two Rivers Pomegranite Cider? Normally I would be interested in that Lost Coast Tangerine Wheat, but the reviews on Rate Beer don't make it sound very good. But if you want to risk it, I could get that. Or, if someone wants one of those IPAs, let me know which one. I don't mind a little bit of IPA, but it's usually not my beer of choice. If there's a preference for some IPA, I can pick up some bottles of cider instead of filling a growler- there's a bottleshop right around the corner that has a good selection.
posted by Secretariat at 2:48 PM on June 2, 2012

My guess is that the cider would be more welcomed than an IPA. I'll vote Aye for your current list.
posted by Greg_Ace at 3:09 PM on June 2, 2012

I fully agree with Greg on this.

Here's another vote for the pom cider. I love off the rail's choc oatmeal stout. I haven't tried their over the mountain, but the online reviews make it look comparable and thus delicious.
