NYC Metafilter Book Meetup

I’m reading Pachinko by Min Jin Lee. I’d like to talk about it with people. Metafilter is full of great and thoughtful people. I think this book would be good for discussion in two meetings because it’s long, with the paperback coming in at 479 pages. There are discussion questions in the back of the book. We could choose two or three (or more!) things to talk about. [more inside]

Evolutionary Analysis book club

A biology book club I'm part of in Toronto is going to be starting Freeman and Herron's Evolutionary Analysis. We read a chapter of a textbook a month (more or less), and answer the end-of-chapter questions. We also try to find a paper related to the chapter to discuss. Everyone is welcome; when we did Albert's Molecular Biology of the Cell, we had everyone from people who had zero biology background to biology Ph.D.s attend. Sometimes we stick to the subject of the chapter, and sometimes the discussion is wide-ranging. It's held at Toronto's Hacklab, which strives to be an inclusive and welcoming space. [more inside]
