CC* Book Club Round 2

Sun April 10 at 3:00 PM, 3rd Coast Cafe
1260 N Dearborn St, Chicago, IL, USA (Map & Directions)
Next up for the Chicago Book Club: Inherent Vice, by Thomas Pynchon. There will be books, beer, banter. What more could you ask for?
Odds are you didn't make it to the last Chicago Book Club meeting, but it's not too late! We had a rousing discussion of The Instructions at 3rd Coast Cafe. Those of us who read The Instructions have selected the next book, and all are welcome to read it and join us for the discussion. Anyone who reads the book and comes to the meeting will have input into the next book club selection (although The Pale King has been tossed around as an option for the May meeting, I don't think we've settled on that 100% for sure).

Inherent Vice has been described as "more readable" by some people. It should be pretty accessible, and it's fairly short. We hope to see some more new faces this time around!

I'm still belatedly chugging through The Instructions, so I'm out for this one as well, but will definitely, definitely be on board for the next one if The Pale King is chosen.

IT WAS ROB WHO WAS READING INSTRUCTIONS. I'm so glad I didn't imagine someone else reading it.

I'll actually read the book this time!

(but, grumblegrumble it's not available digitally.)

IT WAS ROB WHO WAS READING INSTRUCTIONS ALL ALONG!

Which is also not available digitally grumbegrumble. But it's okay, because then I'll already be in the habit of carrying a book around again when Pale King comes out in (eep!) a month. Pale King may exist digitally, but I pre-ordered the dead tree version before I had convenient digital reading means.

If anyone is on the fence, I started reading Inherent Vice yesterday and, for me at least, it's a lot "faster" of a read than other Pynchon I've read.

(There's something to be said about the multiple meanings of the word "dense" here -- but I'm not sure if it's other Pynchon or me to which the word should be applied -- maybe both.)

This seems like as good a place as any to mention:

It appears the street date of Pale King got pushed up. I got my pre-order yesterday. Not sure if its in stores yet.

Only 20 pages in but it is... intense.

Oh hey, this is happening this weekend! If you haven't finished or haven't started the book, there is still time to read it. Yes, you can read it in a day or two. See you all on Sunday afternoon.

We had so many people play hooky from work today because of the weather that I have to go in to cover. :-( Suck.

Man, that does suck. We're running a couple of minutes late, but we'll be there.
