Read and Resist Book Club: "The End of Policing" by Alex Vitale
Read and Resist is a monthly book club (organized by me) featuring books relevant to the Resistance. Our fourth meeting will be a discussion of "The End of Policing" by Alex Vitale. Alex will be joining us for the conversation. We will have coffee and donuts at the book club. We are meeting at 632 Broadway (NoHo) on the 9th floor. Facebook event. You are welcome to join for the conversation even if you don't have time to read the book. [more inside]
NYC Metafilter Book Meetup
I’m reading Pachinko by Min Jin Lee. I’d like to talk about it with people. Metafilter is full of great and thoughtful people.
I think this book would be good for discussion in two meetings because it’s long, with the paperback coming in at 479 pages. There are discussion questions in the back of the book. We could choose two or three (or more!) things to talk about. [more inside]
Evolutionary Analysis book club
A biology book club I'm part of in Toronto is going to be starting Freeman and Herron's Evolutionary Analysis. We read a chapter of a textbook a month (more or less), and answer the end-of-chapter questions. We also try to find a paper related to the chapter to discuss. Everyone is welcome; when we did Albert's Molecular Biology of the Cell, we had everyone from people who had zero biology background to biology Ph.D.s attend. Sometimes we stick to the subject of the chapter, and sometimes the discussion is wide-ranging. It's held at Toronto's Hacklab, which strives to be an inclusive and welcoming space. [more inside]
