March 6

Hey Mefites, let's meetup at this event before it begins, and attend this workshop together. The more, the merrier! Misha Glouberman earns his money as a business communications guy, but he's also geeky & fun. From the Eventbrite description of the event: "You can get to know someone in 12 minutes." This is the insane thesis behind “Tell Me Everything, Now Stop Talking”, a participatory show where we’ll speedrun getting to know each other and embrace the beautiful, heart-opening awkwardness of group intimacy. We all know that there’s no such thing as ethical consumption under capitalism, but what does that mean for the rest of our lives? This Drunk Ed show will ask questions like: What are the most cost-efficient crimes? How do you choose between all of your many garbage habits? And is it ethically acceptable for vegetarians to (literally) eat the rich? Talks by Kelli Korducki, John Leavitt (Mefi’s own The Whelk), Anna Merlan, and Eve Peyser. Tickets and information here!

The Smoke Farm Symposium (think left-inclined TED talks in a barn, followed by a tasty communal dinner) is on Saturday in Arlington, WA. This seems up MetaFilter's alley and I'll be surprised if no one else here is attending. I decided at the last minute to go by myself. Anybody else planning to be there?

"The Science Fiction genre is known for tackling important social issues and examining the human condition, as well as things exploding or being on fire. Alex DeCampi (Smoke, Grindhouse), Adam Rakunas (Windswept), Margaret Trauth (Decrypting Rita), Douglas Wolk (Judge Dredd: Mega City 2) and Arthur Wyatt (2000AD) take a look at the tropes and themes of modern SF and the intersection of flashy eye-candy and deeper meaning." That's right - an ECCC panel with not one, not two, but three Mefites! If you are at ECCC, swing on by!
