NYC dim sum meetup

Anybody else having a dim sum craving?
We're past due for an NYC dim sum meetup, it looks like the last one was pre-IRL. The Golden Unicorn Restaurant was great food & price-wise - it takes a while to get multiple tables if the group is larger than 10 people, so I'm calling this for 11am in the hopes that we'll be seated by noon.

I was thinking of the weekend of January 7th or 21st?

There is this great dim sum place right near the Vegetarian Dim Sum place on Pell. I am totally spacing on the name however...

Can we choose a place where it's reasonably easy to eat vegetarian? I love dim sum but it can be challenging.

I would like to come if Im' around that weekend. Golden Unicorn is delicious!

I would be very interested, have been wanting to get to another NYC meetup for awhile and love dim sum.

I should go to a meetup again. I've missed so many good ones! The sooner the better.

Me, too!

I've been to Dim Sum Go Go with vegetarians and they seemed happy. It's kind of an atypical dim sum experience (no travelling dumpling carts! you have to order from a menu!) but I like it a lot, especially for the amazing sauces for dipping dumplings in.

I liked the golden unicorn but am more than happy to go to a more vegetarian-friendly place if necessary.

I didn't realize I had my heart set on the Golden Unicorn until the alternative suggestions started appearing - dim sum without the rolly-carts of mystery-meats doesn't feel like dim sum to me. Could we do the traditional dim sum first, and then do a full-on vegetarian dim sum meetup the next weekend?

Just don't make me choose between the Jersey City Indian Food Meetup on January 14th and dim sum.
posted by sciencegeek at 8:37 AM on December 30, 2011

Of course not, sciencegeek - I want to eat everything, everywhere!

I'm in if the date works.
posted by bookwibble at 10:03 AM on December 31, 2011

oh yeah! do you just want to pick a date?
posted by gaspode at 7:10 PM on January 3, 2012

Yeah, sorry about the delay - since this weekend is almost upon us, I'm calling it for the weekend after the Jersey City meetup.

Just found out that I have training that day.

If it's still all maybe's by after the Wednesday weekly Brooklyn meetup, I guess I'll call this one off or pick a new date. (and I still want us to do an NYC vegetarian meetup, but my laptop died & I'm posting/reading by phone for now, so I can't manage writing anything complicated for a bit.)
posted by oh yeah! at 8:47 PM on January 16, 2012

Yeah, it's looking like a February date might work better for me. I'd be open to vegetarian, FWIW.

Chinese New Year is on Monday 1/23 as it turns out; I'll go ahead and move this out to 2/4.
posted by oh yeah! at 12:38 PM on January 17, 2012

Well, drat, I'll be out of town. Next time!
posted by computech_apolloniajames at 8:25 PM on January 18, 2012

Awesome, 2/4 works better for me. And we might be dragging along some tourist friends, we'll see.

Yay! A chance to use the only recognizable Chinese I have in my repertoire.

If the veggie one ever happens, I'd be in for that!

Dim sum time is almost upon us! I wish I had a MeFi logo on a stick that I could use to hold up as the rally point, but maybe i can find something by tomorrow morning that I can use.

So, people should try to get there by 11-ish, and update the thread if you're changing your status in the head count. The way it worked last time was a maximum of 10 people at a table, so, if we're more than 10 they'll put us at two tables next to each other. Wear comfortable shoes, as we will most likely be standing in the crowded lobby waiting to be seated for a good 20-30-or-more minutes.

(and, rmless, I'm happy to go to a veggie meetup, but I wouldn't have the first clue as to where it should be held, and since threads without a specific place/time tend towards dithering & falling off the page, I think someone more motivated like an actual vegetarian should propose it. go for it!)

If we start at 11, when do you think we'll be done? I have a thing at 1 that I can be somewhat late to but not completely absent from...
posted by Karmakaze at 12:15 PM on February 3, 2012

I seem to recall the last time we went for dim sum, we were seated for about an hour, maybe? You're not waiting for table service, the carts are right there, so it goes pretty fast. So if we're seated around noon (assuming we wait for a whole hour, which I'm hoping we don't do- didn't last time, as I reacll), we should be out by 1.
posted by ThePinkSuperhero at 1:46 PM on February 3, 2012

Ok, I'm going to attend. My face needs dumplings in it. This is a good way to start my Saturday. I'm leaving now so I'll be there whenever I get there.

Sigh. Apparently the D isn't running today.
posted by Karmakaze at 7:49 AM on February 4, 2012

Guess we're the first ones here. We're at a big table in the back of the 3rd floor.
posted by modernserf at 7:51 AM on February 4, 2012

Here at the 3rd floor.
posted by bookwibble at 8:01 AM on February 4, 2012

Yeah, way less crowded than I was expecting, and the dumplings are as good as I remember. Plenty of room at the table and, several empty tables next to us.
posted by oh yeah! at 8:12 AM on February 4, 2012

Ugh. Sorry guys. We had a late start and walked in the wrong direction for a while. You probably are almost done so we will catch you at the next meet up. Thanks for organizing!
posted by spec80 at 8:37 AM on February 4, 2012

We're still eating, spec80 - TPS & Stynxno just got here. There's one empty chair left at our table and still some empty tables beside us if we need to expand.
posted by oh yeah! at 8:45 AM on February 4, 2012

Sorry I didn't make it. Hope everyone had fun!

I'll be there next time.
posted by defenestration at 9:22 AM on February 4, 2012

We are done and dispersing. Thanks all. (for future calculations, the bill was $170 plus tip divided by 11 people)

Lovely to see all of you! Dim sum was yummers. For those of you who split early, you missed bubble tea and a long walk up Broadway to Union Square. We got Mighty Michelle bags at Pearl River Mart and visited a "pop-up beauty bar" promoting Oxygen's "Jersey Couture". There was a photobooth.
