Pre-Halloween Austin Meetup

Thu October 27 at 8:30 PM, The Pour House
6701 Burnet Rd, Austin, TX, USA (Map & Directions)
Anybody interested in a get together at some point before the end of October? Scheduling wise, who would be up for this? I'm open to any ideas anyone wants to throw out for venue, dates, and activities. I was thinking maybe something after 7:00 the week of the 23rd, just as a jumping off point.

I'm game. Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday of that week would work for me.

Oh hay, I come back and someone else has a meetup thread up! I'm busy Monday, Friday, and Saturday (evening) because that is the week of many good bands playing. That Wednesday is my husband's birthday but we could work around that and everyone could drink in his honor.

How about Thursday, then? I have a sort of feng shui feeling about that.

Sounds good, and my schedule is pretty flexible. And this time I won't be adamrice's only entertainment! :)

I may actually make it out! But in case I don't, I wanted to make sure you guys know about this - you are all welcome to come learn how to fight zombies on the 30th.

Thanks for the tip, nomad! Hope to see you there!

Okay, so I'm really clueless when it comes to planning events, and we are still in need of a venue/activity. Any suggestions?

The regular place for weekends lately has been Dog & Duck and I know we've also been to Freddy's and Cherrywood Coffeehouse. I have no idea how they are in the evenings, though.
posted by immlass at 1:53 PM on October 13, 2011

Okay. Out of those any preferences? (Sorry, this will be my first time.) Dog and Duck is just a five minute walk from my place, though. So that's a plus. Do they let in under-21s?
posted by Krazor at 3:10 PM on October 13, 2011

I believe I can make it, as well. Dog and Duck on a Thursday night, by virtue of campus proximity, could be pretty busy. But that is just a conclusion I jumped to, I have no shreds of evidence to back up my claim.

Note: You're going to see these people in real life.

Well that's ominously put.

One place that has a nice unbusy outdoor area on a weekday night is The Pour House, just south of Justin Lane on Burnet, if that's not too far for some.
posted by hanoixan at 6:05 PM on October 13, 2011

That would be sort of difficult for me, as I don't have a car...
posted by Krazor at 7:35 PM on October 13, 2011

I'm in -- had to miss the last one when my circumstances got extenuated. Maybe I'll bring my digital recorder along again for more survey questions....

Hey, it has food, because we'd have to eat dinner at the meetup. We're coming from the south side but I think that's do-able for us.
posted by immlass at 12:07 PM on October 14, 2011

Thanks for the info, 23skidoo. Pour House it is! Any specific times anyone wants to throw out? How's 8:30?
posted by Krazor at 2:12 PM on October 14, 2011

So is the date definitively thurs. The 27th? I'm probably only good for a "maybe" because work has blown up in my face this month, but if there's no fires to put out, I can probably make it.

Also, we need to all go bowling some time - maybe next time around. I think if we had 3 or 4 lanes reserved, it'd be a blast.
posted by Devils Rancher at 5:30 PM on October 14, 2011

Okay, I've confirmed the date and venue. Would still like to hear what time works best for everybody.
posted by Krazor at 8:13 PM on October 14, 2011

I'll have to double-check with my spouse, who works a 9/80, but we can probably make 7 or run a bit late.
posted by immlass at 6:35 AM on October 15, 2011

Sorry, kids. Thursday is right out for me... but then I am late to the party... as usual.

I am firmly behind DR's bowling initiative.

After all, it's a moral imperative.

Thursday sounds perfect for me! I'm making my first trip to Austin for a conference which ends Wednesday and I'm staying a couple of extra nights to enjoy the city. It'll be great to meet you all!

Any night is fine, I just need enough notice to get off work. Would be great to see y'all as I have missed the last couple of meetups.

I work until 9:30pm, but maybe I can swing by after work. I've never been to the Pour House.
posted by spikeleemajortomdickandharryconnickjrmints at 5:54 AM on October 21, 2011

I'll be there. That night's open, so whenever works for me.

I have to work Thursday but I get off at 9 p.m. and I'll come afterwards.

Yay! Meetup! It's been awhile, can't wait to see all y'all.

My +1 is Mad_Carew who hasn't RSVPed.

I have to take the kid to some sort of science/astronomy open house & presentation at UT tonight, so I'm not gonna be there. I'm bummed, but I'm told that this "parenting" thing ranks above goofing off on the internets. *sigh*

Krazor, I know I recommended The Pour House, but I just looked at the weather forecast, and it's going to be 59F and raining at 8:30pm. The interior of The Pour House may be large enough for us to make a 10+ person table, but we may want to have a backup plan anyways. Should we worry about this?
posted by hanoixan at 9:11 AM on October 27, 2011

Backup plan..........Black Star?
posted by spikeleemajortomdickandharryconnickjrmints at 9:14 AM on October 27, 2011

Black Star is an excellent idea, and in the same area. We could just move it to there, depending on how the weather goes...?
posted by fiercecupcake at 9:27 AM on October 27, 2011

Okay, it looks like I'm not going to be able to make it tonight due to school obligations. But as long as I'm here, yes, it might be a good idea to have a back up plan just in case. I don't see this being an issue, as I'm 75% sure there'll be enough room either way, but to be on the safe side, I'll now field alternate suggestions, and give a definitive response by 5:00 pm. We have Black Star in the running. Any further suggestions?
posted by Krazor at 9:29 AM on October 27, 2011

Black Star apparently has a beer-and-cheese tasting tonight, so they've got a cover. That may or may not be a problem for people.

(I also will be arriving late if at all - I have to show off pics from my trip last week, apparently.)
posted by restless_nomad at 11:44 AM on October 27, 2011

I'm here without a car and traveling either from the Hyatt Regency (just south of the Congress Street bridge) or from somewhere over near Sixth St. Any mass transit advice for getting further up north?

As far as alternate locations go, I am interested in checking out Pinballz Arcade ...

restless_nomad, I hope you can come! This Yankee only gets to Texas once every ten years or so!

Songdog, I work downtown and get off around 9:30. I ride a motorcycle and have a helmet for you if ya like. Just throwin' that out there for ya.
posted by spikeleemajortomdickandharryconnickjrmints at 1:13 PM on October 27, 2011

Thanks, spikeleemajortomdickandharryconnickjrmints, but I've lined up a ride a little earlier. I'll see you there!

My husband hurt his foot this evening (no blood, no foul, but he needs to stay off it) so we have to give the meetup a miss. Next time!
posted by immlass at 5:49 PM on October 27, 2011

At pour house. Crowded and loud inside, lots of space outside, where it is going to get chilly. I'll be outside.

I am going to be a punk again and stay home - I haven't had dinner yet and I'm still in my gi.
posted by restless_nomad at 7:56 PM on October 27, 2011

We had a good time last night, leaving the Pour House due to cold winds and heading to Black Star Co-op. Songdog took a bunch of pics, which he may post a bit later.

Some links from our conversating: the local hacker space I was talking about. And there's also Dorkbot. And then there's pecha kucha.

Good times. I enjoyed seeing everyone again and meeting a couple of new faces. Sorry I didn't get to stay longer. Black Star turned out to be a great venue.

It was great to see you folks. Hope to meet up again soon. Hanoixan, thanks for the links.

It was great to meet you all. I promise I'll post my handful of pictures but they're on my camera and I'm cell-only with a power outage right now. It snowed too early in Massachusetts this year.
