Portland (technically Hillsboro) MeFi 20th Anniversary Meetup
posted June 10, 2019 7:09 PM   RSS | iCal | +googleCal

Sun July 14 at 1:00 PM, Rune and Board (side room)
238 Southeast Washington Street, Hillsboro, OR, USA (Map & Directions)
Let the games begin! Rune and Board has kindly offered to let us use their side event room for the day! 1 - 5ish pm.
There will be ample space to mingle or sit quietly. There is a large board game library that we are welcome to use- but playing games is not required! As we are a private event, feel free to bring outside snacks- let's do a light potluck! Non-alcoholic drinks for yourself or to share are welcome- we don't have a licence to do alcohol in this space, so leave your beer at home.

Activities: Board games and party games, of course. We're considering a mini painting table, if you'd like to paint your own metafilter avatar. There could be a crafts corner if there is interest, of course shout outs are encouraged, and perhaps there will be an anniversary cake!

Transit and parking: Rune and board is easily accessible by MAX or bus. There is a parking lot nearby labeled "Civic Center parking" that can be used by the public on weekends. Additionally there is street parking.

(Note that the game store will be open while we are there, and we've only reserved one side of the space, so please be respectful of any shopping customers, games, or events that are going on outside of our space. See the Code of Conduct)

GRILL ME A CHEESE

That'll be $1.

Maybe a grilled cheese meetup?!
posted by Secretariat at 10:15 AM on June 11, 2019

20 grilled cheeses for $20 though. No change.
posted by Secretariat at 10:17 AM on June 11, 2019 [1 favorite]

I may be reaching my grilled cheese saturation point at the moment...but I'm sure I'll be ready for more by then.

More seriously, I guess the venue would depend on how many people are interested. Although maybe picking a public venue would entice more people to attend?
posted by Greg_Ace at 10:33 AM on June 11, 2019

I will just have moved to PDX (and thus unfortunately am pretty useless for venue ideas) and this sounds super fun!

I reckon I'm in.

Yay! We will celebrate your move.

You have just volunteered to make us all grilled cheeses! šŸ„ŖšŸ„Æ

I am happy to bring chairs, a canopy, foods or help set up clean up. Also, I might be able to borrow the cornhole game from my work if people are interested
posted by vespabelle at 6:20 PM on June 12, 2019

If we hold this at someone's house, I also can bring chairs and food and a willingness to assist with stuff. And my warm welcome to new meetup attendees! And my sword, and my bow, and my axe!
posted by Greg_Ace at 9:47 PM on June 12, 2019

I actually still have a lot of someoneā€™s folding chairs (I have suspicions about who) from the last time I had a backyard meetup, so I will have or bring those!
posted by Secretariat at 8:30 AM on June 13, 2019

I also will have just moved to Portland! (Well, as of 6/28.) Don't have chairs or other infrastructure, but would be happy to bring food/drink!

You'll just have to show up and find out.....

I know of a place in downtown Hillsboro that could host a 20th anniversary meetup. Itā€™s even a block from a MAX stop. Plus, they have comfy chairs and a bunch of board games to play. And itā€™s possible we could talk a local brewery into having beer samples available.

I will come up from the coast for this! Just tell me where and when!
posted by mygothlaundry at 7:23 PM on June 15, 2019

My dad will probably finally be in town, so I'm a maybe.

Also I happen to have 3 dozen ice cream cones: 1 dozen oreo, 1 dozen gluten-free, 1 dozen normal.
posted by aniola at 3:44 PM on June 19, 2019

So I know I started this thread, and I want this thing to happen and I plan to attend this thing, but I donā€™t think Iā€™m in a place at the moment where I can take the lead on organizing. Iā€™ll update this event to reflect the group consensus on time and location, and do what I can to support the event, though!
posted by Secretariat at 9:07 AM on June 23, 2019

If y'all want to come over to our place in North Portland, our house is finally legal.Extra chairs would be welcome, though. Come check out our green roof! And it's painted rainbow!
posted by aniola at 11:46 AM on June 23, 2019 [1 favorite]

Rune & Board is happy to host. Yes, itā€™s not ā€˜in Portland,ā€™ but thereā€™s plenty of free parking for those who drive, and itā€™s a block from the nearest MAX Blue Line stop for those who use Trimet. And there are enough chairs for ~60 people.
Plus, Metafilter is where our name came from.

I just realized my attempt to link to google maps failed. Try this instead.

I'd arm wrestle you for it but people here probably already know and love Rune & Board.
posted by aniola at 11:09 PM on June 23, 2019

Either of those locations works for me. Sometimes I think IRL could use a voting widget for these kinds of stalemates.
posted by Sibrax at 5:23 PM on June 26, 2019 [1 favorite]

Aniola and Nickthetourist can thumb wrestle for it!
posted by vespabelle at 5:41 PM on June 26, 2019

I would not miss this no matter where or when. I'll stay tuned for more.
posted by bendy at 12:14 AM on June 27, 2019

I think both offers are very nice and have possibilities; my suggestion is we settle on Rune & Board, for having the advantage in size and facilities if we get a decent crowd going. Nick, lemme know if there's anything it'd be useful to chat about planning-wise etc.
posted by cortex at 8:30 AM on June 27, 2019 [1 favorite]

Ok, itā€™s on our calendar!
@cortex & secretariat: Iā€™m thinking we should meet beforehand at the shop to discuss ideas. Do you have time this weekend?
posted by nickthetourist at 8:30 AM on June 28, 2019

Aw, thatā€™s so nice that youā€™re both willing to offer! It was recently pointed out to me that Hillsboro is really just about as convenient and transit-able from most of the area as my end of North Portland.

I think I would also be inclined towards Rune and Board for this potentially sizable event!
posted by Secretariat at 8:32 AM on June 28, 2019

Rune and Board is easy to get to for me so that sounds great.
posted by Caduceus at 3:24 PM on June 28, 2019

Updates above! We'll meet at Rune and Board. Rune and Board is owned by nickthetourist and fiercekitten, so a big thank you for inviting us to hold this event there! support your local game store!

Iā€™m waiting to hear back on the alcohol situation. Once I get a yay or nay Iā€™ll let yā€™all know.
posted by nickthetourist at 10:40 PM on July 1, 2019

Unfortunately, we would need a temporary license to allow consumption of alcohol during the event. Getting one take 3-4 weeks, so no alcohol ā˜¹ļø
posted by nickthetourist at 1:02 PM on July 4, 2019

Aw, I bet we can manage to enjoy one another's company sober. Plus there's at least a couple bars nearby if folks find themselves wanting to pop out for a satellite beer excursion, etc.
posted by cortex at 3:04 PM on July 4, 2019

Incidentally, Satellite Beer Excursion is the name of my new band.

What about non-alcoholic beverages and food - are those allowed/available nearby?
posted by Greg_Ace at 4:19 PM on July 4, 2019

What about non-alcoholic beverages and food - are those allowed/available nearby?

Yes, there are some good restaurants nearby. Also, there is still the potluck option.
posted by nickthetourist at 4:56 AM on July 6, 2019

Yeah! I'll plan to make sure there's some non-alcoholic fizzy stuff available at the meetup and e.g. chips and such for light snacking. Bringing your own nosh is also totally fine I think.
posted by cortex at 7:28 AM on July 6, 2019

Would totally bike out for #20! !! but my dad is going to be in town, so I probably won't be able to make it. Have a great time, y'all!
posted by aniola at 12:27 PM on July 6, 2019

If we are potluck-ing, I will use this an excuse to make something delicious and decadent. Cupcakes?
posted by vespabelle at 9:32 AM on July 7, 2019

Yes, let's potluck it up! Cupcakes would certainly be welcome. There is plenty of space and plugins if anyone wants to bring some sort of heated crockpot-based liquid food (eg soup, chili). I'll also make sure there are some plates and cups available.

If anyone needs a beer excursion, McNally's Taproom is a short walk away.

And if you find yourself with a snacking or drinking need that is not met by the potluck food, there are some fun single-serving snacks and chilled beverages available for purchase from Rune and Board!
posted by Secretariat at 5:24 PM on July 7, 2019

Updated the post to reflect *NO ALCOHOL* !

All ages welcome, though!! Feel free to bring your human kids if you think they'd dig it!

Newly-relocated MeFites in Portland! Yay! I still remember some of y'all from the MeFi 10th anniversary meetup, and somewhere in my files there's a photo of me wearing the fedora that got passed around that night. Damn. Can't believe it's been a decade.

I'm marking myself as a maybe, due to a dodgy health situation. If the coast is all clear on Sunday, I will hop on the MAX and head over.

That's the one! I forgot it was actually out there in the world, and not just buried somewhere in my old files. (And my hair is totally white now...)

My wife seems to have come down with something thatā€™s given her nice swollen lymph nodes in her neck and a real sore throat. Iā€™m dropping us back down to maybe ā˜¹ļø; I donā€™t want to miss this but I donā€™t want to be Typhoid Caduceus for all of Portland Metafilter, either.

If you canā€™t make it, weā€™ll miss you folks. But not your typhoid!
posted by Secretariat at 8:54 AM on July 12, 2019

Hey! I just wanted to drop in to mention that the spouse and our spawn will likely be attending. And bringing food of some kind. :D

Before I settle on a recipe - is there any data on the vegetarians/vegans in attendance? Just curious as one of the things I have been considering is a barbecue pulled meat, which I am very willing to abandon in favor of something plant based if it would be better suited to the group.
posted by daikaisho at 3:42 PM on July 12, 2019

Mmm. I like meat!
posted by Secretariat at 4:49 PM on July 12, 2019

Going out on a limb about making this loose estimate, but my feeling is that the majority of the people who are yesses are more omnivorous, and for whatever reason the ā€œmaybeā€ list has more (but not exclusively!) vegetarians. The short answer is that there will be some people who will eat your meat!

Also relevant for all: fine to bring whatever, but itā€™s probably best to make people know about any nuts or dairy in your foods, or just be able to describe the ingredients if asked.
posted by Secretariat at 4:57 PM on July 12, 2019

And one more comment. Iā€™m bringing all sorts of chips and small snackies, plus some soda and la croix. Also, there will be small gift bags for all!
posted by Secretariat at 5:04 PM on July 12, 2019

Cool, thanks! Still torn between 'cue and, like, a vegan kale Caesar, but I'll definitely bring *something.*
posted by daikaisho at 6:44 PM on July 12, 2019

Will anyone else bring a child? Our kid is seven and if there's no one for him to play with, he'll have us leaving after an hour just to avoid endless (literal) whining. If he's the only one, we'll try to leave him with his grandmother or aunt, where he'll have more toys to play with.
posted by Scattercat at 7:45 PM on July 12, 2019

Oh hey, PNW mefites! After a few years away I've returned to the Best Coast and can probably make the event tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing some old faces and meeting new people!

AHHHHHH, see you all tomorrow!
posted by cortex at 9:50 PM on July 13, 2019

We have kid friendly activities like coloring and puzzles, if that factors into any decisions. Not everyone who comes into the store wants to play games, so I try to have a couple things that appeal to a wider audience.
posted by fiercekitten at 12:03 AM on July 14, 2019

So ... my flight into PDX for OSCON gets in at 5:30 this evening. I would love to be able to make it, but optimistically it would be 6:30 before I make it over there. Is there a reasonable chance the time will go past 5, or possibly be an after-event?
posted by jferg at 6:30 AM on July 14, 2019

Missed the edit window but if there is a chance of after-festivity festivities or extended festivities - could someone me-mail me a phone number I could text to find out status prior to heading that way from the airport?
posted by jferg at 6:43 AM on July 14, 2019

There is always the chance of an after-event, but by 6:30 I think thereā€™s a good chance we will be already done or working on closing up any activities at Rune and Board, so yeah, checking in would be a good plan.
posted by Secretariat at 7:41 AM on July 14, 2019 [1 favorite]

(jferg, it wouldnā€™t be quite the same, but we could also do a donuts meetup next week!)
posted by Secretariat at 7:46 AM on July 14, 2019 [1 favorite]

Yeah, I think checking in on the thread is the best bet for how the end of this and any additional post-meetup festivities are shaping up; we'll be sure to try and update throughout the afternoon.
posted by cortex at 7:58 AM on July 14, 2019 [1 favorite]

Sounds good. Would be happy to do a Donuts Meetup again if this doesn't work out.
