Wed January 5 at 6:00 PM, The Goat
430 N Michigan Ave, Chicago, IL, USA (Map & Directions)
So, folks, are we meeting up on January the 5th at the Goat, or will we all be a) too cold; b) too out of town; c) too tired from skiing; d) too emptied of holiday cheer to give it a try?

I have a belated company party to go to, sadly. Call me on the batphone if the party continues past 9pm, though.

I'm there, & anybody who isn't is a yellow-bellied sapsucker.

Who you callin' a sapsucker?

I have never been to the Goat. Is it at street level?

I would be coming in from the burbs via Metra and cabbing it over from the station.

thanks!

The Goat is on Lower Michigan. There's a stairwell in front of the Walgreens on the west side of the street on Upper Michigan. It says "Billy Goat Tavern" on it, actually.

Thanks for the info. I had read a few IRLs regarding the Goat and sort of remembered that it was downstairs or something.

Count me in if the event does happen. If not, then next month.

I'll try to be there. It's never too cold if you have enough to drink.
posted by youngergirl44 at 4:54 PM on December 26, 2010

Oh, I could sort of maybe make this. With the seasonal depression though, people would probably just rather I didn't come. I'm considering only attending meetups that Eamon is at, because I think I need a chaperone/cheerleader, and he seems a likely candidate.
posted by booknerd at 7:40 PM on December 26, 2010

Well I'm certainly no yellow-bellied sapsucker. Count me in.

Booknerd, I hear you, but I find that nothing fights those blues like good people and drunkenness.

This'll be my first full day back in town after bunch in Charleston, so I may be too wiped, but if not, count me in!

Okay, well, I'll make this "confirmed".
posted by crush-onastick at 6:49 AM on December 27, 2010

So far, it's a no-boys event. Unless adamdschneider is attending, despite not having clicked the clicky-thingy that says he'll be there.
posted by crush-onastick at 9:15 AM on December 27, 2010

no boys?
posted by lampshade at 10:02 AM on December 27, 2010

I might be able to make it, if I'm not stuck at a school turning fans on and off repeatedly.
posted by BevosAngryGhost at 10:06 AM on December 27, 2010

When I last checked, no boys had ticked the "attending" box. That has since changed.
posted by crush-onastick at 10:31 AM on December 27, 2010

There....box checked.

Ticking off ticky-boxes--much like lining up dollar bills to face forward--gives me great joy!

I can probably do this. It'll give me an excuse to buy a sandwich from Grahamwich, anyway.
posted by Juliet Banana at 1:22 PM on December 27, 2010

BTW, What time will this be held at?
posted by lampshade at 1:32 PM on December 27, 2010

The date&time are at the bottom of the map. 6:00PM, or whenever people get off of work and stumble in.
posted by Juliet Banana at 1:55 PM on December 27, 2010

Oh, looks like a good crowd! booknerd, you should totally come.
posted by crush-onastick at 4:31 PM on December 27, 2010

booknerd, you should go. Pretend I'm on your shoulder.

I have now clicked the thing. It wasn't there when I previously commented.
posted by adamdschneider at 9:41 AM on December 28, 2010

I plan to be there and have clicked the thing.
posted by evisceratordeath at 3:01 PM on December 28, 2010

Yay! Clicky thingy!
posted by crush-onastick at 4:40 PM on December 28, 2010

Just so you know, you can unclick yourself then click back to your heart's desire. No contracts or surcharges levied.

jest sayin'
posted by lampshade at 12:19 PM on December 29, 2010

PRO TIP:

Toggling between "Yes" and "Maybe" keeps the same number of elements above the click action (with a brief flicker as you switch lists) so you can click the same place over and over without repositioning. Clicking "No" removes your name as an element, so you have to reposition your mouse, slowing down your clicks.

I am *SURE* this is a use case pb envisioned while coding.

Also, because it's come up elsewhere, I would like to state for the record that Chicago-style pizza is motherfucking pizza, god damn it all to hell. It has crust, cheese, sauce and toppings. It is pizza, though I would entertain evidence* to the contrary. You don't have to like it. That doesn't make it not pizza.

I was listening to the arguments from this SCOTUS term, to pass the time at work today. I was shocked at how I could almost no longer tell the angry white men on the bench apart just from their voices.

As I recall, in the Catholic calendar, Christmas is the season of the liturgical year which lasts from the birth of Christ (Christmas Day) until the baptism of Christ on the Epiphany, January 6 (I grew up thinking the Epiphany was actually the arrival of the Magi at the manger--but my sister corrected me this year). The Twelve Days of Christmas are the twelve days of the liturgical season of Christmas, basically, but I don't know what partridges and maids-a-milking have to do with it. Advent is the liturgical season prior to the birth of Christmas. So, "the reason for the season" doesn't actually make a lot of sense, cause the Christmas season doesn't actually start until we're all done shopping and have started boozing and making resolutions.

Mmm. Pizza.
posted by crush-onastick at 2:49 PM on January 4, 2011

Further confusing the issue (Epiphany) last Sunday AM I was biking to Garfield Park Conservatory and passed a church were mass was starting. Cool, I thought. Warming station and neat church to look at. So I went to part of the mass and it was The Epiphany!
The catholic church for convenience's sake changed the date to the first Sunday after New Year's Day.

And it was all about the arrival of the Magi, the baptism thing was never brought up. I was tempted to raise my hand and ask questions but that would be quite a breach of decorum. I was very confused and for the first time actually thought about the meaning of the word and how it didn't fit with three wisemen showing up with gifts. And I have conflated Las Posadas with the Epiphany in my pea brain. Ball of confusion.

who is trying to claim it is not? They are wrong. It's not just pizza, it's the bestest pizza.

Real world trumps my MeFi world again. My conference call got pushed back two hours, which means I won't be making it the Goat tonight. Was looking forward to getting back into the MeFi meetup mode and hanging with you guys (and meeting the new Chicago MeFites since my last meetup), but work says differently.

If you're bored before or after, there is a "soft launch" of the new monthly live CHIRP/saki Music Trivia thing at the Empty Bottle. Tonight it's just 10-minute bits between the bands, but starting February 3 it'll be monthly. Prizes, laughs, good times.

I know this because I am one of the hosts.

Why is this work day not over?
posted by adamdschneider at 3:07 PM on January 5, 2011

Because clocks hate cheezeborgers. Their roundness is an affront to all of clock-kind, and the fact that cheese and buns want to hang out with the burgers and not with the clocks makes the clocks sad inside. So they do everything they can to slow down their hands when they know cheezeborgers are on the horizon.

Oh, and not counting appearances in documentaries or as herself (including dubbing Angela Basset in the biopic), Tina Turner has appeared in four movies: Tommy, Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, and the Last Action Hero. She also had a cameo as herself on Single Female LawyerAlly McBeal. I have saved you from the googling it yourself.

Also, Spiffy, you are dead to us. Unless we see you soon. Then you can be undead to us.
