Are you sure this needs to be set as regional?

Yeah, I'd prefer if regional was saved for events specifically designed as larger regional meetups.

I'm wondering what the book or article will be. Is it possible to post it (just the citation, or even just like, the broad topic area) here first? I'd rather not email and give any personal information about myself before I really know that I'm interested.

[One comment removed; talking about whether this is an appropriate use of the new regional option is okay, but don't be a jerk about it.

Of which: this doesn't feel like a good use of that option—the goal is to have that reserved for events that need an unusually broad for logistical or geographical reasons, not just as a signal booster if you want your already-in-a-huge-city event to notify folks farther away.]

Actually, I'm not really sure what "regional" is supposed to mean, so sorry if it was misused. My assumption was it just would show up at the edges of, say, the tristate area, like NJ or CT, but if that's not true, and it's actually broadcasting to, say, Maine, I'm happy to take it off ... if I can just figure out where to unclick.

(Certainly I didn't expect it to be controversial!)

Regional is a new(ish) setting that's meant for notifying Mefites about big IRL events that lots of people might want to travel long distances for. The 'regional' and 'nearby' distances can be set by each Mefite in their user preferences. A regular IRL event mails everyone within the 'nearby' distance, which I think is 150 miles by default, so from Brooklyn, that's approximately west to Harrisburg, north to Albany, east to Providence. If you set an event as regional, it mails everyone within the 'regional' distance. The default is 300 miles, so from Brooklyn, that's up to Canada, northeast to Portland, Maine, down to Norfolk, Virginia, and west to the edge of Pittsburgh.

Cortex, could the 'regional' checkbox be a little more detailed about what it does? Check this only if the event is regional in scope (eg. camping, festival) is a little vague.

Probably better to discuss the details in that MetaTalk thread but, yeah, we're thinking about potential approaches to communicating the idea more clearly.
