Fri April 24 at 6:00 PM, Eastburn
1800 East Burnside Street, Portland, OR, USA (Map & Directions)
Having taken Seattle by storm the previous week, my west coast pre-nursing-school vacation continues with a stop in Portland from April 21st-27th. I haven't been here since I've been old enough to drink, and I gather you've got a lot of tasty beer. Can you show me some good examples?
I'm still working out my lodging for this leg of the trip, so I don't know what locations will be most convenient to me, but trust that I am very good at public transit and will find my way to any favorite place you like. The only time I definitely cannot do is the afternoon of the 26th.

I see y'all have a ton of meetups--are there places with good local beer that have historically worked well for meetups? I will trust your judgment, I know nothing.

There are indeed some good beery meetup spots. One favorite is Green Dragon, which is large, reasonably centrally located, easy by transit, and has about fifty taps running at any given time, so that's a pretty good default bet.

I think we are free any evening starting the 23rd.

We've also done OK at Apex, which is also close-in and transit-friendly.

Looks like I'm staying in the Northeast part of the city, near the fancy-looking shops on Alberta Street, for at least the first part of my visit. Does that change people's venue ideas? If not, I can go ahead and call a date for Green Dragon real soon.

There is a bunch of tasty food on Alberta, so that's an awesome home base for a visit, but I'm struggling offhand to think of any great beer spots that we've gotten together as a crowd at. It's a really popular street and so getting more than a few people in one place can be tricky vs. something a little more sprawling and off of crazy foot-traffic beats like GD or Apex. And GD in particular isn't an overly long bus ride from Alberta, I think you can do it as a straight shot on the 70 or a transfer from the 8 to the 70 depending on what works best schedule-wise.

Mash Tun is right there and isn't bad but isn't really a Welcome To Portland sort of spot in my mind.

I'm new to Portland and haven't been to the east side of the river much. I will try for a MeFi meetup, especially if public transportation is available.

Or maybe Eastburn? Also bus-friendly, slightly more cozy than Green Dragon, and we haven't been there in a while...

Not to detract from the Alberta area, by any means

Let me know if you need to borrow a guest bike.

Migration Brewing on NE Glisan has great beer (and food of acceptable quality). Bonus points for being right near the Laurelthirst, a Portland institution for live music.

Y'know, looking up the various options I kind of like the sound of Eastburn. How does the evening of the 24th sound, around 6?

Eastburn would be fun- it's been a while since we've been there. It's kind of near to a Voodoo location, if you need to try their doughnuts. And yeah, Alberta is great, so please do try to explore all the tasty food and delicious beer available on that street!

I forgot to add- I think I can do the 24th at 6. I will warn you, this whole situation is happening dangerously close to cortex' birthday (4/26) so we might have to sing or silently take pictures of nerdy shoutouts or something.

Called, and event title changed to reflect the possibility of festivities for cortex' birthday!
posted by ActionPopulated at 7:15 PM on March 22, 2015

Well I should probably try and make it, then!

This sounds like fun, and I've never been to one of these. I'm going to try to go. See you there!

Aw man! I show up on the 28th! Can Portland support a meetup the next week?
posted by mollymayhem at 6:18 PM on March 24, 2015

Fret not, I think it's pretty likely we can support another meetup! You should post a thing.

What, drink MORE beer?? Gee, I dunno...well okay, ya talked me into it.

Just arrived in town today--y'all have got some pretty great ice cream. See you on Friday!

ActionPopulated, we were worried you wouldn't get the authentic Portland experience, so we made sure to turn the clouds and rain back on before you got here. That was close, you almost saw it sunny. How embarassing!

Oh no, did I use up my entire allotment of sunny days in Seattle?

Tonight! My first venture into Southeast Portland! See you all very then!

My first venture into Southeast Portland!

You'll love it. It's a way of life!

Fortifying myself with some pre-meetup donuts.

Some of us are here! We are in the back. There's possibly a reservation for 8pm here but we don't know what name this one might be under.
posted by curious nu at 5:49 PM on April 24, 2015

We are on our way, should be about 20 min. I was going to post a description, but curious nu knows what people look like.
posted by Secretariat at 5:53 PM on April 24, 2015

Okay now we are up front at the tables pushed together. There is more space downstairs if we are hanging out late and need to make space.
posted by curious nu at 5:59 PM on April 24, 2015

I am just dropping off work stuff at home, should be down by 730 or so.
posted by janell at 6:26 PM on April 24, 2015

We are now in a booth on the right, a bit hidden.
