Sat December 11 at 1:00 PM, Strange Matter
929 W Grace St, Richmond, VA, USA (Map & Directions)
Hey Guys! Group interest has shifted from the Bizarre to the Strange! Let's meet at Strange Matter for lunch at 1:00 on Saturday, December 11th.
Strange Matter is a restaurant, venue, and arcade at 929 W Grace Street. This place looks cool and yummy and was recommended by infinitewindow. They have lots of vegetarian and vegan options. You are welcome to bring friends! See you Saturday, December 11th at 1:00.

It might be too cold for Maymont. Kuba isn't really a good place for larger groups. The last meetup was at Mekong, I think about 5 of us showed up. Mekong was a good place since they have an amazing beer and excellent food, both for meat eaters and vegetarians.

True and true, MaryDellamorte. True and true. I think people will respond better to a concrete day and time suggestion. I'll think of something!

Welcome shortyJBot - I'm listening. My schedule is pretty open, and I missed the last one. Mekong is good and easy, but I'm geeky enough to do a walking tour - structure! Throw something out there.

My schedule is a total disaster right now, but I'd be up for something if I happen to be in town.

I'm in, shortyJBot. When were you thinking?

What does the Richmond-sector hive think of the Richmond Historic Society's Bizzare Bits and Rockabilly showcases? It's open Saturdays 10-5. We could meet at 11ish, see the sights, and then grab some lunch nearby in the Fan. What do people think of December 4th or 11th? It's after Thanksgiving, but at least it's before Christmas! Event site is here: http://www.vahistorical.org/exhibits/exhibits_current.htm and I think it's a $5 entry.

There is also a walking tour of the Hollywood Cemetary that is year-round and is $10 and runs on Saturdays and Sundays.

I am a natural plan-ahead person, but I suck at group decisions. Opinions are more than welcome!!

Maybe it's because I've grown up here and have been to the cemetery a dozen times, but I would never pay anyone 10 dollars to do a "walking tour" of that place. It's open everyday until 5 for free. It's a huuuuuuge place and it would be impossible to do a walking tour of the entire cemetery anyway. I really enjoy that place though and never pass up an opportunity to go (unless it's to pay $10). Also, I think the Richmond Historic Society thing sounds great, I've been wanting to go.

OK, I made it a confirmed date because I think there will be more interest (or at least confirmed "no's") with a real date and location. I hope it works but let me know if it doesn't work for you! There could be edits or a take 2 at a different location. I hope everyone who is interested can make it!

I'm in. Thanks for proposing a unique meetup idea, shortyJBot!

I have little excuse to miss it as the VHS is right across the street.

(As a suggestion, maybe you can update the location to the exact address of the Historical Society. 428 N. Boulevard.)

Here's a press release about the rockabilly exhibit.

Looks like admission is free to the VHS?

I'll throw out that the Sally Mann exhibit is nextdoor if folks are feeling it, as well. In addition. That call could be made day of. That is $10, though.

VCU's Commencement is at 10 am on the 11th, if that makes a difference.

Is it against the guidelines to suggest a relative's restaurant and bar for meetups? I'm not in the area, but I know a place where y'all could go.

Full disclosure overrides any ethical dilemma of recommending an eatery! Suggest it! I didn't realize this was the commencement day. Might be a bit trafficy, but I hope it still works for people who are interested. I'm still in, but it's definitely good to know. Thanks!

What restaurant infinitewindow?

Oh good, I'm glad you named something good. I love that place, I eat there at least once a week and they have excellent vegan options. Is your relative named John?
posted by MaryDellamorte at 10:43 PM on December 1, 2010

YAY! I've been wanting to try that place.
posted by shortyJBot at 4:06 AM on December 2, 2010

All of these places are within a few minutes of my apartment. I ended up being on-call for the last one so I couldn't make it, but I don't think I'll be on-call that week, so hopefully I can actually show up for this one.

I'd be up for lunch at Strangematter if everyone else is in.

I'm still in. Are we abandoning the VHS/VMFA idea and just going for lunch at Strange Matter?
posted by emelenjr at 11:46 AM on December 4, 2010

We could do VHS at 11 and lunch at 1 and people could opt for one, another or both? emelenjr, I am for sure going to catch the Sally Mann and have another friend who wants to go too, so you are welcome to join us at another date, tba.
posted by rainbaby at 6:32 PM on December 4, 2010

I would not be insulted if people just wanted to grab lunch at Strange Matter and skip the VHS! I'm still interested in going to both, but can go to the VHS another day.
posted by shortyJBot at 4:49 AM on December 5, 2010

Yeah, maybe just lunch is easier.

I agree with rainbaby.

Just lunch it is! I changed the meetup event to just lunch at Strange Matter at 1:00. See you there!

Rainbaby, thanks for the ping. I had not noticed the meetup but fortunately my schedule is clear. I'll see you there in a couple of hours.
posted by QuantumMeruit at 8:22 AM on December 11, 2010

I'll probably be there at 1:30ish

I had a lot of fun, we should do it again sometime in the near future.

Yeah - nice meeting/seeing you people. I like the idea of hitting local museums or landmarks. It seems like a shared interest, and also would be easier to add friends and family into the mix if anyone wants.

I was briefly hanging out with you all a little while ago until I realized I was with the wrong group. Trying to figure out how this all works now. Hope to see you all again.

Welcome to MeFi, udon. I'm glad we didn't scare you off.

Great to see the familiar faces and meet some new ones! I'm definitely up for some museums or random attractions around town.

Thanks for making it out, guys! It was nice to meet everyone. It's official--we have to do it again, with udon next time!
