Let's go see a spaceship at the California Science Center!
Note: we need pay $2 each to reserve our tickets.

Hey all maybe we could extend the meetup to post-spaceship beers and snacks? We could go to the rest of the museum (if so inclined- i have never been and want to) before the 2pm space shuttle visit.

yes, there's plenty to do afterwards!
apart from the science center and caam, there is also the new and improved natural history museum. wandering through the rose garden. etc.

I got to see it last year and found myself surprised by how moving it was to see in person. Would definitely love to see it again. So basically I just buy a ticket for 2pm, and we'll coordinate later?

Amongst all kinds of other cool stuff, by the way, the ScienCenter also has various awesome space-related artifacts.

So, klanger and I were thinking- maybe meet up at noon, go into the museum, then space shuttle at 2. Is there a landmark out front of the museum where we can meet? I have never been.

If you look at the satellite view of google maps, I think we should meet under the green dot. There's a fountain under there that we can look conspicuously Internetty around.

I support the green dot meeting place. It appears to be between the box office and the IMAX theatre (see the first image on the first page of the California science center's pdf map).

It was great meeting everyone.
The Endeavour is magnificent--even if it does look like they used LEGOS for the heat shield tiles.

So it turns out hanging out with a bunch of really smart people in a cool museum is a ton of fun, though we did discover that nerds are about the same as cats when it comes to herding them together. ;D

I got home a bit ago. Thanks for a great meetup everyone! Was awesome to put faces to handles and meet some cool new people I didn't know well.
I'm sorry to hear about that mess, Room-641A. Hope you get home safe, soon.
I've got a couple of pics, mainly of the IR camera. I'll post 'em once I figure out how to coerce my phone into spitting them out with a minimum of fuss.

I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's pics. Apologies for not being more social, today was a rare day where I just didn't feel good. Wish I could have met all you new faces under better personal circumstances, but am glad to have had the chance today. Had a great time despite myself!

Ahh, home!
Briefly, what they said was that some guy dove under the train in the Vermont intersection. Bottom line, guy has a few bruises, no one else was hurt, they switch the eastbound track to westbound, and the whole thing was over in an hour. The bus even goes right by a friend's house so I went over there for a bit. All worth it! (Well not the for the guy.)
I had a great time with everyone, and it was great to put some more names with faces! I don't think I took a lot of pictures, but that's always a sign that I was genuinely engaged. I'll post a link here once I upload them.

Wow, so sorry to hear that, Room 641-A! I'm glad that you made it home without too much of a delay. (And very glad that no one was seriously injured. . .or worse.)
