Ronald McDonald House Hyde Park Dinner -- Fed men tell no tales.

Sun March 23 at 4:30 PM, Ronald McDonald House -- Hyde Park
5444 South Drexel Avenue, Chicago, IL, USA (Map & Directions)
RMH March DINNER: We continue to have a great time cooking dinner for people at the Hyde Park Ronald McDonald House (5444 South Drexel Avenue, Chicago, IL) so we're doing it again on 1/11/14 starting around 4:30 and finishing around 8:30 with dinner served at 6. It's like a potluck that we all make together at their kitchen, and also feed families of sick kids.
This is March dinner. We're also doing brunch in February. It's thread is here. As you may guess from the title of the event, we've done this a few times before. All the Ronald McDonald House events are listed here.

Hyde Park RMH asks that we have no more than 12 people. I don't think that should be a problem, but keep that in mind.

At Hyde Park, they ask us to cook for 25 people plus the group of us that comes, and to have dinner ready around 6. I'm happy to help coordinate menus and food amounts and anything else that might need coordinating.

For those that haven't done this before -- they have kitchens in the houses that are well stocked with standard kitchen ware and utensils and tools We will bring the food along for cooking. Spices they sometimes have, and sometimes don't, so it's safer to bring, but if you forget and it's common, don't worry. It may be hard to find, but they'll have oil, salt, pepper and some other things. They're happy with us cooking whatever menu that we'd like, but to remember that we're cooking for a variety of people with a variety of tastes, so multiple dishes work better than one giant pot of stew so that everyone will be able to eat. One of the times we went, we were a little pork heavy on our dishes and would have succeeded slightly better with more pork-free options. So, what do you want to make (yourself, or as a suggestion for the group menu). Please do make suggestions, otherwise I'll accidently come up with something that's a lot of work for everyone like pierogi from scratch.

For those wanting to go, but concerned about distance, carpooling with someone else in the thread is definitely an option, so don't let that hold you back.

I'm basically in copy and paste mode with these, so let me know if I'm missing some key thing in the invites.

I think I want to do savory bread pudding.

That sounds good.

I'll make dessert- two crumbles, one bluberry, one apple. Those went over well last time.

Here's a crazy thought: shrimp boil?

Is it crazy? It sounds good to me.

Cool. A green of some kind would be good, if anyone's looking for ideas.

Shrimp boil

I've come into opera tickets for the day... I can drop off a salad type thing early if that'd suit the menu planning.

You make excellent salads, so I'd be down for that.

the Menu was requested from the coordinator yesterday. Any updates?

I was hoping we might be able to carpool with someone and would be interested if that's possible. Potentially neapolitan ice cream (bc blueberry crumble sounds divine) and potato salad. Is that ok?
posted by lunastellasol at 10:03 PM on March 6, 2014

potato salad sounds great. Where would you be carpooling from?
posted by garlic at 5:50 AM on March 7, 2014

Awesome! We are in the Lakeview area but can meet somewhere nearby if it is more convenient.

If you're near LSD I can pick you up.

eamon routinely picks me up near the Walgreens on Belmont/Broadway because I will explode if I have to drive myself.
posted by crush-onastick at 8:33 AM on March 9, 2014

Perfect! Walgreens sounds good, we can meet you there.

Just as a heads-up: shrimp takes no time to cook and is gross when overdone, so barring a total Charlie Foxtrot on my part, the boil is going out the door at or very near 6. Plan accordingly!

Crush, luna, I'll pick you up at 4:15pm from the Walgreen's lot.

If it wouldn't be too much to ask some one to mix them up for me, in absentia, I'd like to toss the dry salad bits together, and bring it, together with dressing around in the early afternoon.
posted by Cold Lurkey at 9:47 PM on March 11, 2014

we can totally do that.
posted by garlic at 7:17 AM on March 12, 2014

I can mix salad parts!

(I did not work blue here, and I hope you will appreciate the restraint it took.)

So, sesame spinach with garlic? Baked spinach with cheese? Or chickpeas and spinach (with tomato and smoked paprika)?
posted by crush-onastick at 1:33 PM on March 12, 2014

sesame spinach with garlic sounds good.

Weird fun fact relevant to today:

The origin of the first Ronald McDonald House and the origin of the Shamrock Shake are tied together.
posted by MCMikeNamara at 12:43 PM on March 17, 2014

Also, they both came from 1974 - like everything good.

I'm only here because Motörhead reference fuck yes.

Thank you, Sir Mix-a-lot Namara... If there was anyone I implicitly trusted to toss my salad competently, it would be you.

I just realized yesterday that this was our Year anniversary doing this. We've been to the house for dinner and brunch a total of 8 times (if I'm counting right). Go Team!

Shoutout to Cold Lurkey who couldn't make it to the dinner but still dropped off supplies for a good salad, and has done similar in the past.

Also looking through the past events, shoutout to eamondaly for showing up, at least for a little bit to every one of these we've done. What a great guy that eamondaly is.

But I hate that guy.
