Sun February 2 at 1:00 PM, mild deer den
2000 Nicollet Avenue, Minneapolis, MN, USA (Map & Directions)
Let's meet up for a kimchi-making fest!
We'll be making vegetarian and regular kimchi.

I will provide all ingredients and some snacks. Just bring a few dollars (it probably doesn't cost more than $5 per person) for the ingredients and some canning jars....and do not wear nice clothes. Feel free to bring beer!

I will memail you my address and phone number a day before the event.

What what?! Kimchi making sounds awesome, though admittedly I have zero experience in making, only the eating. Aside from team sports stuff on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays, I'm free after 6:30pm most days!

I know two more people interested. mlo, do you know anyone else who might want to join us?

I'd turn up if it can vegetarian kimchi. Or if I can be labor that doesn't have to touch fish products.

I do have Korean friends with vegetarian recipes! I will ask for them.

I can come if the date/time works for me. Thur/Fri/Sat/Sun are always better for me and weekends (anytime) are preferable to weeknights.

This will most likely take place on the weekend, daytime.

That is extremely awesome! Could I bring my Korean-adoptee sister-in-law?

Yes, of course!

I'm committed to being somewhere the evening of the 18th and Sunday mornings, but that's it, I think.

How does Sunday January 19 at 1pm work for everyone?

I couldn't do Sunday the 19th, but if there's a critical mass of people who can don't hold out for me. Have fun!

Shouldn't this be two meetups? One for burying the kimchi, one for digging it up three months later?

The 19th at 1 is fine with me.

The burying part is not required -- it's the traditional method and makes for tasty kimchi.

There are all types of kimchi and we'll be making the kind that you can eat same day or after 3 days, depending how fermented you want it to be.

I think I'm going to have to move this meet up to another day. Suggestions?

I have no preference. Some other Sunday at 1 would work for me. I'm busy Sunday mornings each week, but have nothing else on my calendar.

Ran off to an ultimate frisbee tournament last weekend, so dropping back into the convo. Sundays - not this coming one though- work great for me!

Oh and I'm asking a friend if she'd like to join as well!

Any weekend works for me, really.

Where do I buy canning jars in the winter?

I'm pretty sure the Uptown Rainbow stocks them year round. I'm also pretty sure I saw some in the Cub on 59th and Nicollet last week, but I'm not positive.

Rainbow, Target (where I get most of mine!), and your local co-op (usually near the produce aisle)

Sending all the RSVPers my info in a few minutes...

Ah, thanks! Is there a certain size that is ideal for kimchi?
posted by mlo at 2:53 PM on January 31, 2014

32-64 oz -- bring at least one or two...and maybe up to 4 per person. Smaller ones (12-24 oz) are fine too!

I'm getting excited!

One more thing -- if possible, bring your largest mixing bowl! FYI -- red pepper stains might not come off of plastic stuff....
