Official NYC Friendz R Hard Meetup
posted July 1, 2013 12:58 PM   RSS | iCal | +googleCal

Wed July 10 at 6:30 PM, Lillie's
249 West 49th Street, New York, NY, USA (Map & Directions)
Some of the people have sort of spoken. We will be beating back the crushing fog of loneliness next Wednesday at Lillie's. Bring your desperate need to connect to someone, anyone, in this vast sea of humanity
Reservations are MADE! They're under the name Elizabeth R. In retrospect I should have said my name was Meta or something. Oh well. We have tables for between 30 and 40 people, but we don't HAVE to sit- they just don't do reserved bar space.

SOMEONE BRING A CAMERA, mine is broken!

Weeknights are harder for me now but I can try to make this work. I've been reading that thread with much fervor. Let's do this!

I vote for Tuesday or Wednesday. (Thursday I'm going to a burlesque class in what is sure to be another astonishingly successful* attempt to build new and lasting friendships!)

*lol

I can do Lillie's fairly easily. Tuesdays are currently impossible for me, but that's it.
posted by Eideteker at 1:04 PM on July 1, 2013

Also I made this event because I made the other thread, but I know zero things about Midtown so other people should give input on the venue...

I will say though that Tuesdays are flat out for me.

This doesn't have to be regular but it DOES have to be next Wednesday at 630.

Wait this is the place with the green stools in the window? I always assumed only male models were allowed in there. I walked by once and all the men sitting on those stools looked like Morriseys. So I will be happy to go there as long as they do actually allow other kinds of people.

"But I'd LOVE for there to be a non-Brooklyn regular drinky drink meetup."

Yeah, Brooklyn is a brutally long haul for me. Although I'm not much of a drinker. I will watch you drink, though. It will not at all be creepy. ಠ_ಠ

The 10th works for now. I'll change my RSVP when I know for sure.

Question: should we make this for 6:30 or 7?
posted by bookwibble at 1:43 PM on July 1, 2013

Well, watching me might not be creepy, but my preferred style of drinking involves soaking my pompadour wig in my ale and then sucking on it.

So.... how do people recognize each other at meetups? I mean, I know the standard "I'm a friend of mathowie" line. The only meetup I've ever been to, I already knew someone who was there.
posted by zarq at 1:50 PM on July 1, 2013

Well I'll be there drinking. I just popped back online after a meeting, thinking the thread was still going all friendly NYC style and saw this:

I like that a thread on the difficulty of making friends turned into a meetup.

I don't; it's a noisy chatty derail of what was an interesting thread.

"Question: should we make this for 6:30 or 7?"

I'll probably show up however long after 6 it takes me to walk from the Bryant Park area. I have nowhere else to go after work, except home. And once I'm there, I'm done for the night. So make it early til whenever/late? Or don't. I'll bring a laptop and a book so I'll be fine on my own (introvert LYFE, y'all *gang signs*).
posted by Eideteker at 1:50 PM on July 1, 2013

I usually walk in and announce I'm from the internet to random people. Usually I get the right group on the first or second try. Also now I recognize some mefites.

I just realized that the fact that I am unemployed means I should do this, because:

a) I don't have to go to work the next day, and
b) this will be 2 days before I get my severance package so I can splurge.

Heh.
posted by EmpressCallipygos at 6:26 PM on July 1, 2013

IRL threads often get updated as people leave for and/or arrive at the venue. "I am heading there now wearing a 1740s era pompadour with the requisite lacy-collared velvet jacket, see you soon!" or "I am here sitting in the back wearing a lab coat and reeking slightly of sulfur".

Also people from the internet have a look to them, somehow.
posted by mountmccabe at 6:37 PM on July 1, 2013 [3 favorites]

And for the New York meetups you can also tell us by the fact that we are the large and noisy group in the corner and everyone else in the place will be giving us a wide berth.

If we have this much interest, it may be a good idea to warn the bar.

Therefore 1. we get private space and 2. perhaps we can negotiate a drink special with them

but I may be getting a head of myself here.

I know from other meetups that most bars don't care about this sort of thing, but I don't know about Lillie's. Judging by its website it's almost like it could go either way. Anyone here been there who could confirm this?

Cornelius "Cory" A. Matthews (Ben Savage) is the main character of the series. In the early seasons of the show he is portrayed as a slacker who is intelligent and capable, but does not pay attention in class. Throughout the later years his "slacker" tendencies diminish, and instead he seems more neurotic. Despite his trademark neuroses and paranoia, Cory is usually perceived to be the most level-headed member of the main cast. In fact, Cory’s relationships with his best friend Shawn and his brother Eric, revolve around Cory frequently keeping the both of them from making immature decisions. From season 2 onward, Cory openly expresses his feelings for Topanga. It is explained in ‘A Long Walk to Pittsburgh’ that although he teased her during the first season, "she was the girl [he] sat up at night thinking about." Despite his strong feelings for Topanga, he still has strong attractions to other women, and has been unfaithful to Topanga on a few occasions, but has regretted the decisions and realized he loves Topanga more than he could ever be attracted to anyone else. He had his first kiss with Topanga in season 1 episode, 'Cory's Alternative Friends,' and in the 7th season they get married. Cory has an extremely idealistic view of the world and strives to make sure that he and his friends will grow old together. His actual name is Cornelius, as revealed in the series finale (Mr. Feeny calls him by it to which Cory quickly shushes him by saying "Shh, Mr. Feeny! Not even Topanga knows that!").

I have to admit... I was nervous going in. I'm always uncomfortable in crowds, and with so many people coming who knew each other I totally thought I'd be the odd man out. But by coincidence Greg and I arrived at the same time (and he shocked the hell out of me -- in a good way -- by actually recognizing me! Greg, I don't know how you did it man, it's been years since I've had a profile pic) and it all went uphill from there.

This was a great evening, and you're all such incredibly nice people. I felt bad that I wasn't able to meet and spend more time chatting with everyone.
