ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK

Sun August 25 at 12:30 PM, The DIA: Beacon
3 Beekman Street, Beacon, NY, USA (Map & Directions)
Proposal: That the NYC dwelling Mefites do take up a great burden and escape the Heated and Tortuous confines of the Concrete Jungle toward the Edenic and Splendid pastorals of Beacon, NY on a Day Trippe on Sunday The 25th of August. The village is reachable via Metro-North and contains Many Sources Of Amusement, such as the DIA: Beacon and humble, Hudson Valley charm. What say you, Urbanites?
I propose we make our ways up to the DIA to Look At Art at around 12:30pm and then collectively retire for some form of local food and or drink.

I might be in. I've always wanted to see DIA. Like all things, it depends.

Everyone keeps meaning to go up to Beacon but no one actually does it. Let's change that.

I ride up there all the time. This would be an excellent excuse for a motorcycle trip.

The 24th will conflict with The Pink Superhero's BBQ though. Are things closed in Beacon NY on Sundays, or does it need to be a Saturday for travel-time reasons?
posted by oh yeah! at 6:36 PM on July 16, 2013

^ What oh yeah! said. Looks like there are a lot of people going to the BBQ. Unless you're purposely proposing an alternative for people who don't like BBQ, children, or large groups.

So I'm going to suggest we all meet at the DIA around noon-30 (talk amongst yourselves for how to get there from your locals) and then retire for some sort of food in town.
posted by The Whelk at 9:11 AM on July 23, 2013

So, is anyone here definitely going by car? If so, do you have room for another person? I really want to go to this, but an off-peak round-trip ticket to Beacon from Grand Central is $30, and so yeah. I can pitch in for gas or whatever.
posted by bookwibble at 9:34 AM on July 25, 2013

Bookwibble, if I'm going, I'll be driving, but I don't know if I'm going yet.
posted by oh yeah! at 7:15 PM on July 25, 2013

Well TPS's BBQ has moved out a weekend, so I think I can commit to this DIA Beacon trip after all. Bookwibble, you've got shotgun if you want it. I can fit two more passengers in the back seat comfortably, 3 not so comfortably. It's about an hour & a half drive from Jersey City, so, people should try to get to Journal Square before 11am.

Eideteker, you have a motorcycle? How has this not come up before?

Also this sounds awesome, but I'm not sure I could get away that long sans partner. Would there be other things to do for antisocial partner if people get too much for him?

Maybe this is a dumb question, but I am not seeing this meetup in the sidebar of Metatalk (which is normally where I look for new meetups). Any reason why?
posted by computech_apolloniajames at 6:01 AM on August 21, 2013

Chances are because it's more than whatever distance you've specified in your preferences for meetups (it's more than 50 mi. outside of NYC).
posted by Eideteker at 6:22 AM on August 21, 2013

Computech, it's because this has the category as Exhibition, the meta sidebar only shows Meetup category meetups.

  • picnic on Hook Mountain. There's a nice hiking loop, accessible from either Nyack Beach State Park or Rockland Lake State Park. Should be great autumn hiking, lots of neat flora and fauna. Nothing too strenuous, and great views.
  • Kingston's First Saturday. Free shuttle buses between their many art galleries. Also, Kingston itself is fairly pretty; it was one of the first three European settlements in NY (and the first state capital!), and there are supposed to be some really beautiful old buildings (for architecture fans). The city is amazingly beautiful when you ride across the bridge into town, over the giant inlet that made the city a port. Kingston's pretty far, though.
  • Photo tour... I know we have a couple of photographers (c_aj, SW13 for certain). Might be worth it to just take a nice leisurely drive, stopping frequently, to take pictures of stuff. Storm King, Indian Point, tons of bridges, and just tons of scenery. Maaaaybe when the leaves change?
  • Walkway over the Hudson. Bonus points: It's right near PhoBWanKenobi! (So she'll have to come!) SmartDalek, too.
