Western Mass Meetup

Sat July 27 at 1:00 PM, Northampton, MA
48 Main Street, Northampton, MA, USA (Map & Directions)
It's high time we had another Western Massachusetts meetup, so we're having one on July 27 in Northampton. This will be a multistage meetup: early arrivers will gather for lunch at La Veracruzana, then the gang will head to Hinge for meetin', chattin', drinkin', and possibly gamin' through the lazy afternoon hours and into the evening, when eventually the die hards will proceed to Herrell's for ice cream. It's been five years since the last Western Massachusetts meetup, at which awesome people attended and great times were had, and I hope a lot of you can make it!
For those who can only attend part of this, we'll plan to meet at these times:
  • Lunch: 1pm at La Veracruzana
  • Meetup: 3pm at Hinge.
For the sake of context for the comments below, my original proposal text read:
It's high time we had another Western Massachusetts meetup and I'm proposing one as promised to take place July 27 or 28 in or near the Pioneer Valley towns of Northampton or Amherst, Massachusetts. It's been five years since the last Western Massachusetts meetup, at which awesome people attended and great times were had, and I hope a lot of you can make it!

For our location I suggest one of our various brewpubs, where attendees can enjoy dinner and beer as late as they're inclined, but I'd be happy to gather earlier as we did in Hartford a few months ago if anyone wants to play some games with fellow MeFites.

Woot, Western Mass!

I mean, yes, I would like to attend. I would even go to Amherst. On a weekend. When I am not required to be there for work. (Really, I haven't been to any of the pub-type establishments in Amherst or N'ton in a long time so I don't have an opinion on the location - just tell me when and where.)

I'd be up for games, too.

Should add, I obviously have a preference for Northampton simply because it's closer, but I'd happily drive to Amherst to see you wonderful people.

Five years since the Northampton meet up? Wow. That was my very first meet up! Seems like I've known a couple of you longer than that.

Anyway, I would love to come to this one but I'll be away for a couple of weeks at the end of July. *sigh*

Darn, I would love an excuse to go to Western Mass but I plan to be in NJ that weekend.

If it's the 27th, I'm definitely in, as is otters walk among us. We'll be in Boston the 28th.

27th! 27th! 27th!

posted by chowflap at 8:16 AM on June 15, 2013

I might be able to make it over there from here (my part of Mass. is, apparently, west of Western Mass.) No particular preference between the 27th and 28th.

I (and my gf sineala) would go! I would prefer Noho to Amherst (coming from Eastahampton). Either date is fine, any time is good!
posted by lysimache at 10:25 AM on June 15, 2013

Sounds fun! I might have family visiting then, but would love to go if I don't.

Either Amherst or Northampton would work for me. I don't know about places in Noho, but the High Horse in Amherst would be nice. They have a spacious upstairs room, good food and beer, and is nice and quiet now the students are gone.

Amherst is just a tad easier for me than NoHo, though I'm pretty happy just having someone else set something up and then arriving and giving everyone high fives.

Aaagh! I'm moving to Northampton, but not until 7/30! I guess I'll just have to wait for five more years until the next one.

This might even be worth the drive up from New Haven. I'll see if I can swing it.

Also, if someone wants to meet for lunch/dinner at Veracruzana first, let me know. I've been tempted to drive up from Hartford for their fish tacos before...so this would kill two birds for me!

victoriab, the mister and I are always up for Veracruzana, MeFi meetup or not. Say the word and there will be tacos.

posted by jessamyn at 4:57 PM on June 16, 2013 [2 favorites]

Either way (or both). victoriab seemed to be suggesting pre-gathering tacos, so I called it lunch in the interest of moar meetup.
posted by Songdog at 5:52 PM on June 16, 2013

La Veracruzana, for anyone who is unfamiliar. Much deliciousness.

Ice cream is also delicious. Especially Herrell's.

Definitely don't plan anything around me, but if a) this happens in Northampton and b) the weather is agreeable, then I'll probably fly in from Boston - the airport is about a mile from the center of town and is a very nice walk. If there are any foolish adventurous Boston folks that want to go but don't want to drive I'd be happy to bring people.

Off topic, but is La Veracruzana actually good?! I got burned by Bueno y Sano soon after moving out here and have been leery of local Mexican places ever since. It would be great to have a good option here! Degree of difficulty: I'm from California, so.

Yup. I'm pretty demanding about Mexican food, and I liked it a lot.

Oh crap, my calendar has failed me. I actually have a conflict on the 27th. Sorry!
posted by backseatpilot at 4:54 PM on June 17, 2013

If Mexican is the goal, may I also suggest Mi Terra (on Route 9 in Hadley) and Mission Cantina (South Amherst, although maybe a little small [ even with the recent expansion])?

I know nothing about Mexican food, though, so...

Are brew pubs out, for some reason? Just curious.
posted by absquatulate at 6:51 PM on June 17, 2013

Let me vote again for Mexican lunch for those interested, then [re]group at a pubbier place for meetery, games, beer, more food, etc. as schedules and interests merit.

There seems to be a slight lean toward Saturday the 27th at this point.
posted by Songdog at 8:18 PM on June 17, 2013 [4 favorites]

For lunchy stuff, La Veracruzana is good. My basis for comparison is having lived in LA for 6 years, and Anna's Taqueria in Boston being favorite. Thai Corner in Amherst is also amazing delicious, maybe even a little smaller. For Mediterranean stuff, Amanouz in Noho is so very good, similarly informal and smallish. As a transplanted Buffalonian, Wings Over Amherst is where I feed a homesick appetite.

Oh and Bub's BBQ is not too far in Sunderland, and their alligator tail and hush puppies are respectable.

What's the brew pub situation? ABC is... unreliable in quality. Haven't heard much about High Horse.

why am I even posting, I'll be in Maine.

Hey, have we picked an official day, time or place yet?

No, but I'm going to join in the leaning towards Saturday because this lunch-dinner-whatever MeFitetravaganza sounds lovely but tiring (as in "I tire easily", not "MeFites are tiresome").

I think we've only mentioned pubs in Amherst so far, if anyone has Northampton suggestions. Veracruzana has locations in both Amherst and Northampton, which probably doesn't help to narrow it down.
posted by camyram at 9:23 AM on June 22, 2013

NoHo is easier to get to for folks coming from up or down I-91.

posted by Songdog at 8:34 AM on July 8, 2013 [1 favorite]

Let me reduce this to two options, both on July 27: Northampton or Amherst.

Northampton: Amherst: I haven't been to Hinge yet myself, but it's been recommended by a trusted and reliable friend as having better food and beer options than the Northampton Brewery (though it lacks the latter's full bar).

I suggest meeting for lunch at 1pm, the pub at 3pm, and ice cream as the crowd determines.

What say you all?
posted by Songdog at 2:17 PM on July 8, 2013

Just chiming in as a N'ton resident who eats out way more than she should: I agree that Hinge has better food than the Brewery. High Horse also has great food.
posted by chowflap at 2:36 PM on July 8, 2013

YES! I will go to either location; if NoHo is easiest for travelers to get to, then I can make the trip across the river *exaggerated sigh* :)
posted by absquatulate at 2:38 PM on July 8, 2013

I think I've only been to Northhampton twice, and Amherst never, so I have no preferences and both sound good to me! I value local opinion, so you guys feel free to decide.
posted by DiscourseMarker at 3:00 PM on July 8, 2013

Alas, my plans have changed and I'll be traveling that weekend. It's a driving trip to New Bedford, so it's conceivable that I'll be passing through North-herst at the right time to attend, but likely not.

posted by DiscourseMarker at 7:15 AM on July 25, 2013

See this PDF map for the locations of the city parking lots. Whenever I end up over in NoHo I usually end up parking in the Hampton Avenue or Union Station lots. Parking's not free, but is dirt cheap by big-city standards.

I'm sorry I won't be there — hope you all have fun!

Let me just say how very pleased I am to see a MeFi meetup in the Pioneer Valley! It's unlikely that I'll come out of my hole in the ground for this (never made it out to any of the Boston meetups in all of the years I was living there, either—I just moved out here in June), but Northampton is lovely, and I hope you all have a fabulous taco-beer time.

(Oh god. Taco beer. Best or worst idea ever? You decide.)

I recommend parking in the city garage on Armory Street. It's less than a quarter mile walk from our meetup locations, and you don't have to pay until you return to your car, so it allows for flexible timing. The cost is only fifty cents an hour.
posted by Songdog at 8:33 AM on July 25, 2013

Are there any parking restrictions outside of the town center? I am a stingy SOB when it comes to parking, and I don't mind walking.
posted by not_on_display at 10:52 PM on July 25, 2013

You can find free parking on streets away from downtown. A good bet are the streets off Hawley St. (Phillips, Butler, and Hancock) which are a five minute walk, tops. In general, drive away from downtown on any street and meters eventually disappear.

Northampton businesses are holding sidewalk sales this weekend, which means it will probably be a bit busier than usual.
