Monthly Brooklyn Board Game Meetup

Sat July 13 at 2:00 PM, ocherdraco's apartment (#4D, buzzer #407)
192 East 8th Street, Brooklyn, NY, USA (Map & Directions)
Our JULY meetup will be Saturday the 13th. Bring your games, snacks and/or drinks. Please post in the thread what you're bringing so others can make sure they don't bring the same thing, and/or so they can drool over the thought of homemade cookies. These meetups usually last 8-10 hours, so feel free to come over even if you can't make it for the first hour or three.
As previously, we'll be starting at 2pm.

No June meetup, as we aren't going to be home on any June weekend (and I will, in fact, be out of town for almost the entire month).

Since the last meetup, I've acquired Morels, a two player game, and I'd love to try it out at this next meetup.

I bought Cornucopia, Dark Ages, and Alchemy for Dominion! Aaaaah!

Suh-weeeeeeeet! I look forward to all that Dominion goodness!

Hey all, will you accept a Philly-Mefi-board-game-transplant? Thank ya kindly. PS: I will bring wine if that at all influences your decision.
posted by Katine at 9:09 PM on June 7, 2013

I went to the Philly one a few months ago--we can have an exchange program.
posted by mlle valentine at 2:10 PM on June 8, 2013

Please join us, Katine! Bring whatever you want to bring, wine or otherwise. I will say that we seem to drink far more beer than wine at these things, but perhaps you'll start a trend! (If you drink white, I'll drink it with you.)

Tau ceti & I are in the area just for the summer, so our weekends have been a blur of omg-we're-in-NYC-and-not-Michigan things so far, but... board games. Tempting. I'll report back later after we confer.

Yay! Please come.

I'm having a wisdom tooth removed Friday morning, so I'll be staying home to be safe. Wish I could make it!

Boo! Good luck with your tooth.

Hello! Accept a Singapore transplant temporarily in New Haven for a college programme? (: I'm not too sure I'll know what kind of food to bring though, as much as I'd like to, since it would be my first weekend in the US. (Transit directions would be greatly appreciated too. The train is the way to get there from New Haven, right?)
posted by undue influence at 1:39 AM on July 5, 2013

New Haven, Connecticut? Yale-area? I'll let the locals guide you on transit, but just as a head's up, you're talking ~2 hours by car to get down to the NYC area, probably more by train. (I only mention this since the non-USians in my life tend to think places on the East Coast are closer together than they are, and if you haven't looked at the distances, you might not know that.) Not to dissuade you though!
posted by deludingmyself at 9:30 AM on July 5, 2013

Haha, yeah thanks, I did my research already! It's just a maybe.
posted by undue influence at 3:33 AM on July 7, 2013

Please come, undue influence! There's no need for you to bring food, as you are coming so far.

Here is how to get to our place from New Haven: take the Metro North train from New Haven Union Station to New York Grand Central Terminal. This part will take about two hours. Inside Grand Central, find the entrance to the Grand Central-42nd Street subway stop. You will need to purchase a MetroCard or a single use ticket. Get on the 4 or the 5 (the green line on the subway map) toward Downtown and Brooklyn, and take it to Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center. At Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center, get on the B towards Brighton Beach or the Q towards Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue (they leave from the same platform). Take the B/Q to Church Avenue. Find the exit to Church Avenue. When you exit, turn right, and walk down Church Avenue until you reach E 8th Street. You will pass Bobby's Department Store, and cross Coney Island Avenue before you reach E 8th. Turn left on E 8th, and our building will be the first one on the right. Buzz #407.

If you have any trouble, call me at 646-484-8636.

If that seems overwhelming, here's the simple version:

1. Metro North to Grand Central
2. 4 subway line to Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center
3. Q subway line to Church Avenue
4. Walk to the intersection of E 8th Street & Church Avenue

I have to go through Grand Central on my way if you want to meet there and come together Undue Influence.

Don't know what food I will bring yet!
posted by SpaceWarp13 at 6:32 AM on July 9, 2013

I have acquired The Stars Are Right and will be bringing it.
posted by Hactar at 11:43 AM on July 9, 2013

Cool! I have been given Munchkin as a gift, so we will have that also.
posted by ocherdraco at 1:39 PM on July 9, 2013

Oh, game-wise, we packed only Dominion, Carcassone & Hive for this summer (in other words, all our two-player capable games). Happy to bring any along that aren't duplicates.
posted by deludingmyself at 9:06 PM on July 9, 2013

Please bring Hive and Carcassonne. Dominion is covered.
posted by ocherdraco at 7:28 AM on July 10, 2013

Dominion is more than covered. Are there any expansions you guys don't own?
posted by Hactar at 1:16 PM on July 10, 2013

Well, technically, all the ones we have are grobstein's. The ones we have in the house are the original Dominion, Seaside, and Prosperity.

mlle valentine has said in this thread that she now owns Cornucopia, Dark Ages, and Alchemy.
posted by ocherdraco at 2:26 PM on July 10, 2013

Also, in case anyone was wondering: we have an air conditioner in both the living room and the bedroom, so we won't be getting overheated.
posted by ocherdraco at 10:37 AM on July 12, 2013

Thanks ocherdraco and SpaceWarp13! On one hand, it would be a nice break from readings and seminars to join you guys, and on the other hand, we have an optional trip to Walmart and some outlet mall tomorrow, the first of which which as I understand is something of an American institution ;)
posted by undue influence at 4:46 PM on July 12, 2013

Oh man. Walmart. I don't know what to say.
posted by ocherdraco at 6:01 PM on July 12, 2013

Hi guys, tau_ceti is still recovering from some nasty infectious thing that nearly had me making a late night post to the green last night about urgent care facilities in Brooklyn. He's feeling a lot better now, but I think we're probably going to pass on infecting you all IRL. Hopefully August?
posted by deludingmyself at 9:32 PM on July 12, 2013

Oh, I'll give this a go. I LOVE Dominion and the people that I typically play with now have a small child and can't play that often anymore. So, I guess I will meet some mefites. in the thread what you're bringing...

I read this ask meta about cheese a few months ago and realized that I know nothing about cheese...

On that note, I will bring a couple cheeses from Zabar, and a baguette and crackers. I was going to bring more stuff but to me it is a haul to BKN.

No games to bring but, did I say that I'm willing to play Dominion?
posted by Wolfster at 6:19 AM on July 13, 2013

I have a thing from 4-6, is it weird to show up after that?

I have Zombie Fluxx, would people be into that?
posted by Wretch729 at 7:04 AM on July 13, 2013

It would not be weird to show up after 6. Feel free. As for Zombie Fluxx, there are usually some folks who like Fluxx around.

Wolfster, the cheese, baguette, and crackers sound delightful!

Now I just have to clean the apartment...
posted by ocherdraco at 7:37 AM on July 13, 2013

We are bringing beet salad and cider and hopefully some Dominion (just have to get protective sleeves on the way).
posted by mlle valentine at 9:37 AM on July 13, 2013

I will be happy to help sleeve cards.

FYI, if anyone arrives right at two, we may still be neatening up the apartment and getting set up.

Hey y'all! Sorry I couldn't make it - going to the beach instead. I sure hope I'll have another chance, however far in the future, to join a meetup! Have fun! (:
