DC meetup at Tunnicliff's

Thu January 17 at 6:00 PM, Tunniclif's
222 7th Street Southeast, Washington, DC, USA (Map & Directions)
Some MeFites were together last night and decided it was time to call a meetup on the east side of town, in particular at Tunnicliff's, which is relatively spacious, quiet, and near the metro. MrMoonPie suggested we meet around inauguration time. Perhaps a weeknight the week prior? The inauguration is on Monday, January 21.

I'm in, depending on the day...

I can make Tuesday or Thursday that week. (Infant CPR class on Wednesday night....)

So: 1/18 or 1/20. Can we maybe start a little earlier, too? Say 6 or 6:30?
posted by anotherpanacea at 8:08 AM on December 22, 2012

Wait, Tuesday and Thursday that week are the 15 & 17!

I can make the 17 (or Monday the 14th) -- earlier start is better for me

Thursday, Jan. 17 suits me best. I can start early.

I'll be in the city organizing an industry event for midday on Jan 17th, so I'll already be in-place for an evening event, if that's the day everyone picks.

Not sure if I can make it on the 17th. I already said I'm doing a happy hour that day for a different online forum, but maybe I can do both. My geekness knows no bounds....

I'm in.

So shall we firm this up then?
posted by zennie at 4:17 PM on December 28, 2012

OK, I changed from it from "proposed" to "confirmed." A little closer to the 17th, once there's a sense of the expected turnout, I will check with Tunnicliff's about reserving a table for us. Looking forward to seeing folks!

Is a wandering Canadian, in DC for a conference, welcome?

Absolutely!

In case anyone is interested but is not in the immediate geographical area, there's very likely to be a meetup with Korean BBQ up near Baltimore toward the end of the month.

Drat, I have book club that night - and I've actually read the book, so I should go.

Is there any interest in a February meet up too? I could organize it if exogenous wants a break. Perhaps something metro center ish?

I'm not sure whether or not I can make this meetup, so yes, I'd be interested in one in February.
posted by EvaDestruction at 4:18 PM on January 2, 2013

I probably can't make this one- enthusiastic yes on Feb

Measured Out my Life in Coffeespoons: "I could organize it if exogenous wants a break."

Feel free to set one up in February as I'm sure you won't be stepping on any toes, least of all mine. I think people are generally pleased to have anyone call a meetup, especially now that it's done on IRL instead of MetaTalk.

Can we have the February meetup at a dim sum place? Are there even any good ones around here?
posted by troika at 7:19 AM on January 3, 2013

I'd make an effort to appear, since I've never had dim sum, good or bad.
posted by Nomyte at 8:12 PM on January 3, 2013

I'm going to try to make it out on the 17th. I need to make it into DC more.

Looks like I'm not going to make this one.

For February - troika, any opinions on Ping Pong? I've never been, but either of their locations are convenient to Metro.
posted by EvaDestruction at 4:17 PM on January 7, 2013

There is pretty good dim sum at Oriental East in Silver Spring (metro access), but I hesitate to suggest it for anything meetup-like unless we plan to meet up at 10 am and stand in line for an hour.
posted by zennie at 5:58 PM on January 7, 2013

Ping Pong is expensive and the service is iffy. They used to do a decent prie fixe lunch, but I haven't been back since they stopped it.

I love dim sum, but that would be kind of tough for a meet-up...almost all the places I've seen recommended are way out in the burbs.

What about Teaism in Penn Quarter? I think we could actually reserve space downstairs, they have a variety of food, they have drinks, and you pay at the counter so figuring out the bill isn't a hassle. (Plus there are other places in the area if some folks want to keep the party going.)

I'm up for anything, and long overdue to finally join in on the IRL fun. Not to make waves, but I just thought of adding Board Room in Dupont Circle into the mix of options for February? I still haven't been, so it's not an endorsement, but might be fun for folks who want to linger and exchange volleys of substance-less trash talk after the core mingling is done. Apparently they have deals on beer pitchers, too?

Dudes--China Garden in Rosslyn is the dim sum place to go to. Close to metro, and arriving by 11:15 is usually sufficient.

I'm going to be in New York City that day, so while I'll be home in time I might poop out at the last minute.

Which is too bad, because I want to interrogate exogenous about solar panels.

Board Room in February sounds delightful. I loved how raucous it got, beer is decent and board game selection is great.

Board Room sounds like fun!

Looks like our head count at this meetup will be about eight to ten people. I'll wait until after the weekend for any changes and then call Tunnicliffs about holding a table for us.

I'm coming for the Inauguration, but I won't be in the city until Saturday afternoon. Poop.

I might make it! This would be my first meetup ever!

I've just gotten off the phone with Tunnicliff's and things look good to go for Thursday. Let's meet in the front bar to start and they should be able to seat us in the back once we have critical mass. I don't expect them to be all that busy that night (no major sports on TV and it'll be four days before inauguration), and if that's the case they could seat us sooner.

I'll be wearing eyeglasses and my red Washington Nationals cap and will be there at 6pm. Tunnicliff's also knows to expect the group "MetaFilter" so you should be able to find us by asking a server. I probably should have told them "Friends of Jessamyn" or something, but my creativity lapsed.

I should get there by 6:15 at the latest. I'm pretty easy to pick out in a crowd--6'5" and pony-tailed. See you tomorrow!

Wish I could make it, but I have an evening phone interview with someone on the west coast.
posted by Nomyte at 10:24 PM on January 16, 2013

I've got the flu so I'll sadly skip tonight. I'm getting better but I dont want to abuse my throat trying to talk in a loud environment, nor subject anyone to fear of contagion.

MrMoonPie has generously offered to be the master of ceremonies tonight, so please look for him.

That was fun! We survived inundation by Missourian staffers! Thanks aaanastasia, Homeboy Trouble, Xalf, and especially MrMoonPie! Sorry you couldn't make it exogenous-- hope you feel better soon.

Homeboy Trouble, be sure to call a meetup next time you're in town. We won't try to direct you to a nonexistent bus again, we promise!
