UPDATE: Let's get drinks at the Red Derby, which one MeFite lovingly described as super divey. Cash only, ATM inside.

I'd promise to come, but there'd probably be another hurricane or freak snowstorm or something. I'm eagerly looking forward to updates! (Weekends preferred.)

Sounds expensive, but I might be willing.
posted by anotherpanacea at 3:48 AM on October 31, 2012

I can probably come if we do it after 7pm, or on a weekend.

If it doesn't have to be a lounge, Monday night is family-style night at Hill Country BarBQ (certified Texan here certifying that it's some of the best BBQ you'll get anywhere), and I've been dying to get a group together to go. Would anyone else care for that?
posted by ubiquity at 5:58 AM on October 31, 2012

I would be up for it. Weeknights are best for me.

Loveeee all-you-can-eat night at Hill Country! It's $20 per person.
posted by jaksemas at 7:55 AM on October 31, 2012

Per the original suggestion, Poste is having a (very very discounted) winter cocktail event this Saturday starting at 4 to launch their lounge, if there's interest in that! It looks very fun. Link: http://www.princeofpetworth.com/2012/10/poste-launching-winter-cocktail-lounge-nov-3rd/

It is taking all the restraint in my Carolina-BBQ-loving soul not to quip about what a Texan's praise tells me about a BBQ joint, but I do like the atmosphere in Hill Country. I'd worry it could be pretty loud, though.

If you like cocktails another good possible destination would be the Passenger, a little farther up 7, for their Sunday drunk brunch offerings. It's rarely terribly crowded.

I'd be game if it's a time & date I'm available.
posted by phearlez at 10:42 AM on October 31, 2012

Sounds like we have a couple of options:

1. Poste, Saturday November 3, evening (because you can't lose with $5 cocktails).

2. Hill Country BBQ, Monday November 5 or November 12, evening (after 7 PM?).

3. Passenger, any Sunday, drunk brunch

Maybe we can wait for a few more ideas/dates of availability for posting a meetup? I'm down with either option.
posted by elisse at 10:48 AM on October 31, 2012

I'm not sure an all-you-can-eat event is a good place to socialize, but I could be wrong. The cocktail thing sounds interesting, but given the attention it's almost certain to be packed, and so not a great choice for a group. I'm leaning towards the Passenger option, or really anything that's not a special one time only event.
posted by Nomyte at 10:50 AM on October 31, 2012

How about Red Derby in Columbia Heights? Weeknights after 7 or any weekend but this one and Thanksgiving work for me. They also do brunch.
posted by anotherpanacea at 11:06 AM on October 31, 2012

I'd be interested! Weeknights post 7pm or weekends works for me as well.

I don't know why DC has had such a spotty meet-up track record. When I was new to Austin I was glad meet-ups were a pretty regular thing, as it was a nice way to see some new faces.

Has anyone been to Poste's lounge? I'm concerned about size when I hear "lounge". 20 or so people came to the Getaway Meetup.

I don't know why DC has had such a spotty meet-up track record.

I can't speak for anyone else but I work all the way out in Fairfax. So coming back into the city at a reasonable hour during the week requires some planning and my wife to be willing to handle walking the dog.
posted by phearlez at 11:43 AM on October 31, 2012

Several years ago a Mefite got the suggestion to start a "salon" for DC users. It was called Big Ideas Social Club and ran for a while. But now he lives in Seattle under a new name and runs it there. I'm told that someone continues to carry the torch here in DC, but I never got in touch. At this point it's split off from MeFi entirely, but it might be part of the explanation for "why so few meetups."
posted by Nomyte at 11:48 AM on October 31, 2012

I would be interested in Passenger on a weeknight (less crowded!), or Red Derby. Both of those are great!
posted by aaanastasia at 2:10 PM on October 31, 2012

I would be up for a meetup. I think weekends work better than weeknights. Red Derby is fine and close to me, but super divey if that's a problem for anyone.

Also, Texas barbecue is an abomination. I wouldn't avoid a meetup because of it, but seriously people, don't let Texans do barbecue.
posted by Bulgaroktonos at 5:16 PM on October 31, 2012

Would consider any of those options. And yeah, I have at least an hour's commute from work to anywhere in DC, so.

I work in DC and can do evenings with planning, but really like the weekend idea. Perhaps Mr. Coffeespoons would come too.

I am definitely in! I just moved here (from Texas, pointedly ignoring all jabs at the food of my people) and would love to meet up. Traveling in/around DC is pretty easy for me, so any of these suggestions work.

Anything but a Tuesday or Thursday night is good for me, but if the Cowboys are playing I may bow out so I can suffer the shame and humiliation that comes with watching them alone (alternately I beg everyone's pardon in advance as I check my phone and grimace multiple times during our outing).
posted by vakker at 6:53 PM on October 31, 2012

Weekends are typically better for me (but not this weekend... go figure). As a pescatarian, bbq is not my first choice.

Also, any one up for a board game meetup? I own a grand total of 0 board games, but I'd love to play with a bunch of friendly mefites.

Okay, so how about the Red Derby next Saturday at 7 PM? I'll post the event today.

I'd encourage anyone else to propose/post other meetups (so far I see Passenger on a weekday OR Sunday brunch; Texas BBQ; board game night).

For the future I'm also free anytime (weekends + after 7 on weeknights).

Unfortunately, I can't make it to this one -- a friend is having a dinner party at exactly that time. :( Red Derby is awesome, though!

Bulgaroktonos and I are sort of a package deal but I'm also just weekends. I'm excited about doing something, especially something in which I wander around awkwardly asking people "are you...uh...are you from the internet?" or, alternatively, "Excuse me, are you a friend of Jessamyn?". I always feel awkward so it's nice to have an excuse.

Let's make sure to put an "OK Cupid Polyamorous Furry Singles" card on our table, just so it's clear we're from the Internet. Either that, or one that says "MeFi."

(from Texas, pointedly ignoring all jabs at the food of my people)

There is nothing wrong with the food of your people other than that you keep calling it BBQ despite all the tomato and sugar.

if the Cowboys are playing I may bow out so I can suffer the shame and humiliation that comes with watching them alone (alternately I beg everyone's pardon in advance as I check my phone and grimace multiple times during our outing).

Have you forgotten that the Redskins are our team here? Everyone will just assume you're a local. Unless you let hope show on your face, in which case it'll be clear you're looking at a different bunch of players.

Weekdays are difficult for me since I'm out in Fairfax for work, but not impossible (except Wednesdays, when I am teaching). Weekends simply depend on other foolish obligations I've gotten myself roped into.

For what it's worth, since this is a group of locals I'll mention if you're interested in something this coming Monday I'll be at a fundraiser we're doing at Pound the Hill for neuroendocrine cancer, which one of We Love DC's former writers was diagnosed with recently. I doubt it would be a great event to chit-chat at since we'll have some live music but by all means come give money.

Once, my wife who is, ahem, a New Englander* asked me what brisket was. I told her it was something that shifty Midwesterners would tell you was barbecue even though it was never on a pig. I was thinking of Kansas City barbecue, but I like applying it to Texans who eat brisket, too, since it makes it seem like I think they're Midwesterners. I enjoy upsetting Texans.

In any event, if it's made outside the state of North Carolina 99/100 it's not barbecue.

I'm guessing my wife (Mrs. Pterodactyl) and I will be coming to this, but who we don't really plan things that far in advance so we're maybes. Our roommate, Copronymus, is on a road trip right now, but I'd put him down as a likely because he loves Red Derby.

*Apparently, people think it's weird if I call people Yankees, even when they are. I don't mean it as an insult, until I do, and you can usually tell.

Maybe one of my fellow REAL BBQ supporters will start a new entry for a date of their choosing? I could ALWAYS do Hill Country on a Monday evening.

Yep, very convenient that the meetups keep happening in our neighborhood!

And what the hell, cows make tasty 'que! Tomato and sugar? The purist hill country Texas BBQ places don't even serve sauce! I feel like first-debate-Obama being blind-sighted by arguments I didn't even anticipate.

Who cares if smoke wants to marry a pig or a cow? Would you rather all such preparations of meat be called civil-smoke-unions instead of BBQ? Isn't deliciousness and love what BBQ is really all about?

Anywho, some delicious "civil-smoke-union meat preparations" can be had at KBC, about a 10 minute walk from the Derby. It's way too small for a meetup, but they're an excellent new business that I'd like to see thrive.

Not sure I can make it on Saturday or not, but I did want to say that Big Ideas Social Club does still try to get together (though it's once a month or every few months of late) and while it's not MetaFilter-exclusive, it is MetaFilter-friendly. Planning action happens on Facebook, please feel free to join the group if you're interested, or let me know if you'd like updates if you're not on Facebook.

So for anyone still following this thread and planning to attend, I'll be there at 7 on Saturday with a MeFi sign and possibly wearing a hat.

And yeah, we definitely got a shout-out on the elections thread over on the blue:

"There seem to be an awful lot of Virginians posting in this thread. Do Virginian MeFites ever have Meetups? I moved here a year ago and hardly know anyone. :(

They're called DC meetups for convenience, and to avoid embarrassment."

I hope this isn't out of line, but might your 11 year old be interested in some lightly used books? I have been trying to pare down my shelves....

(they would be 11 yr old appropriate, of course)
posted by troika at 8:46 AM on November 8, 2012

I'd be curious to know other people's opinions, but I'd be hesitant about bringing an 11 year old to the Derby. Not that anything bad would happen to them, but it is a bar. They serve food, but it's not really a "bar and restaurant" type place, it's just a bar. It's not even a nice bar. If my parents had taken me to the Derby at 11, I think I would have been unhappy about it. Not saying absolutely don't do it, but I'd be cautious.
posted by Bulgaroktonos at 8:55 AM on November 8, 2012

I think it would probably be okay at 7pm, though perhaps ubiquity should call and ask their policy on the obviously underaged? And maybe let her bring headphones or something.
posted by troika at 9:26 AM on November 8, 2012

This is exactly why I asked. Y'all know the place and I don't. She was perfectly happy at Liam Flynn's Ale House in Baltimore, where we arrived at 6pm and stayed for an hour. That's probably what I'd do here. So the question on the table is, is Red Derby, early on a Saturday evening, suitable for a well-behaved 11-year-old. So far there seems to be one maybe and one maybe not. I will definitely call ahead, though, and inquire at the RD itself.

troika, she would love some lightly used books, if they are J or YA. She's not quite up to the hard stuff yet. She seems to read mostly fantasies about vampires, witches and superhuman cats, though i have been able to interest her in Oz, Prydain, Narnia, and Green Knowe. Currently our read-aloud book is Michael Chabon's Summerland. The Hobbit is next on the list.

Huh, I was already on planning to be at the Red Derby to celebrate my birthday. I'll likely see you folks there. Also likely is the fact that I will be quite inebriated and singing rugby songs.

In case it makes it easier to identify us, I will be wearing a red sweater and have a ponytail. Bulgaroktonos will be wearing a dark green sweater. Who the hell knows what Copronymus will be wearing but he's a scrawny nerd with glasses and obviously that will make him stand out at the Derby.

I enjoyed talking to those of you I could hear. I hope that next time I'll get to talk with more of you.

Unfortunately I didn't get to meet all the people who showed up (almost 20 people, by my count), but I had a great time meeting the ones I did get to talk to! Thanks everyone for coming. Apologies for the confusion in finding each other - my sign was far too makeshift and tiny once we got a bigger crowd going.

I went back and compiled everyone's availability and suggested future meetup locations here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AoV6xgjk3xHEdFEzNUJaU1VKU1pncTBUTFpnWVNBcGc

Please feel free to fill out yours if you're not on there! (I tried to go with stated availability rather than implied...) Right now there's a slight majority towards weekend meetups. Also feel free to suggest locations - any ideas for bars with a more moderate noise level?

I know someone mentioned every-other-month meetups, but I think we can definitely manage a December one if the holidays don't get too crazy for people.

I called Red Derby, and although the bartender allowed that it would probably be OK for me to bring my daughter, the faintness of his resolve pretty much made up my mind for me. But I'm very sorry I missed it, it sounds like y'all had a great time, and I hope to be able to make the next one. On a weeknight, I would never have my daughter with me. Weekends, it's hard to predict.

I also noticed that Hill Country BBQ does their family style thing on Sundays now too, also for $20.

In general, I wish we'd gone upstairs, sooner. I forgot that the reason I like Red Derby is that you can actually hear people talk on the roof. I've almost never hung out downstairs. It wasn't even cold if you stood near the heaters.
