Sat May 19 at 3:30 PM, Grand Central Bowling
808 SE Morrison St, Portland, OR, USA (Map & Directions)
Grand Central Bowling, 3:30pm, May 19th.
Please try and show up by about 3:15pm. If there's ten folk on the maybe list but only four at 3pm, we'll just rent the one lane and latecomers may be out of luck (though we might just rotate a bunch of people through one lane or something anyway, but it'd be less than ideal).

Suits me fine.

Sure.

OK, as long as the sun is not shining.
posted by mimo at 2:26 PM on April 24, 2012

Alternatively, if the sun IS shining, we could set up a bowling alley in mimo's back yard...

no bowling on the bean.

isn't bocce the real answer to outdoor bowling?
posted by ansate at 6:48 PM on April 24, 2012

Yes.

The weekend of the 12th-13th would be out for me, but other weekends would probably work. I haven't been bowling in years.

The first weekend of May doesn't work for me.
posted by mimo at 10:40 AM on April 25, 2012

Any votes for the 19th/20th or 26th/27th? Either works for me.
posted by Greg_Ace at 11:21 AM on April 25, 2012

I'm interested.

Let's go to Hollywood Bowl or the AMF Lanes on Powell this time. Or maybe the bocce court at Caruthers Park?
posted by fiercekitten at 6:46 PM on April 25, 2012

As an aside, I'm down for some more bocce, perhaps even on a regulation-length court. I'll bring the balls, so to speak.
posted by Secretariat at 7:11 PM on April 25, 2012

Not that your back yard isn't perfectly lovely, but the prospect of a regulation-length court is intriguing. The only times I've ever played bocce have been on smallish, uneven surfaces. Lessons in local minima.

That said, I am also interested in regular bowling.

The last weekend of May is Memorial Day. Some people do things on this weekend, some do not. But many of us have that Monday off (May 28 to be exact).
posted by fiercekitten at 7:48 PM on April 25, 2012

Bocce and Barbeque on Memorial Day weekend sounds...almost...archetypically traditional. But I think that's a good thing, in this context. but would that make us hipsters? how about if we don't enjoy it ironically? But if a lot of people have other plans that weekend, then we can shoot for bowling (indoor or outdoor) on the previous weekend.
posted by Greg_Ace at 9:04 PM on April 25, 2012

I'm all for a Memorial Day weekend bocce & BBQ meetup.

And we could still do bowling somewhere between now and then.
posted by nickthetourist at 7:18 AM on April 26, 2012

I would enjoy bowling and/or bocce.
posted by cortex at 10:01 AM on April 26, 2012

We could totally have a BBQ for Memorial Day. I would not enjoy it ironically at all. Caruthers Park is not on the list of reservable picnic sites, so we probably couldn't have a BBQ there. However, maybe we could find a picnic site at someplace flat and grassy?

Updated. Will call later today to reserve a couple of lanes (probably just under "metafilter").
posted by curious nu at 5:26 AM on April 30, 2012

It does not inspire confidence when even the event initiator doesn't indicate he will attend.
posted by mimo at 8:30 PM on April 30, 2012

I'll take the bull by the horns and lead the way. EVERYBODY will want to attend once I've signed up!

...Right?
posted by Greg_Ace at 9:19 PM on April 30, 2012

Yes! unless the weather is really nice
posted by mimo at 9:46 PM on April 30, 2012

Sometimes I forget to do that part.
posted by curious nu at 8:13 AM on May 1, 2012

Also: originally this was set for the 20th, but there's another meetup happening on Sunday so I moved this to Saturday and then to 3pm (they have something else going on that day until then). Two lanes under name "metafilter". If no one shows by 3:10, they'll sell the lanes to the next person. BE THERE OR BE THERE AND HAVE TO WAIT AND PROBABLY JUST GO TO GREEN DRAGON AGAIN OR SOMETHING.

I will be there!
posted by Sibrax at 3:21 PM on May 7, 2012

I might stop by. Have to catch a flight back at 10 pm and probably doing some kind of hike/run earlier in the day if weather permits. It'd be great to meet you all.
posted by bread-eater at 7:08 PM on May 7, 2012

Due to the event going on beforehand, Grand Central wanted to move us back half an hour so they could actually clean up the place a bit; said okay, so now it's at 3:30.

Any thoughts on post-bowling activities?
posted by nickthetourist at 10:05 AM on May 17, 2012

Beer's always good, unless you had something else in mind.

What Greg said.

I'm not quite sure I can make it to bowling, but something after is possible. Still playing catch-up on homework.
That's what I get for taking 2 math classes, I guess....
posted by nickthetourist at 8:10 PM on May 17, 2012

How much is this per person? Does that include shoes or just the lane?
posted by fiercekitten at 9:08 AM on May 19, 2012

From looking at the site I think it's $15 per 30 minutes per lane, and $3 for shoe rentals. So probably $15/person on the high side?
posted by curious nu at 9:39 AM on May 19, 2012

Likely closer to $10.
posted by curious nu at 9:52 AM on May 19, 2012

Had to work – sorry I can't make it. Have fun!
posted by churl at 10:20 AM on May 19, 2012

bread-eater/nevafeva, if you guys are still thinking about coming, hang out near the check-in desk and we'll find you.
posted by curious nu at 11:04 AM on May 19, 2012

We should make it, but may sit back and watch.
posted by nickthetourist at 11:30 AM on May 19, 2012

So I just had the brilliant insight to call and ask: how many people can bowl per lane? Answer: 8. Went ahead and dropped the reservation it down to one lane (which was probably going to happen anyway) so they had time to re-slot it if they could and we're set.
posted by curious nu at 12:17 PM on May 19, 2012

I thought the max was 5.
Splitting cost 8 ways is nice.
posted by nickthetourist at 1:52 PM on May 19, 2012

We should make it, but may sit back and watch.

There's an extra charge for that, plus you have to buy a bottle of Cristal.
posted by mimo at 2:05 PM on May 19, 2012

I remembered it as five also, but gal said unto me: "Eight."

And I thought the Blazers were overpriced....
posted by nickthetourist at 2:17 PM on May 19, 2012

I'm going to head over a little early and get something to eat.

If it'll get more people to join in, I'd be happy to pay for a second lane and/or some extra shoe rentals. We'll have to go halfsies on the Cristal, though.
posted by Sibrax at 2:21 PM on May 19, 2012

Better show than the Blazers, baby.
